  • I feel like Dreamworks writing in general is underrated when you think of animated films.... often most of the praise gets heaped upon Disney and Pixar.... and whilst they are clearly excellent studios.... today I think I wanted to give a bit of attention to the OG Big Green Machine: Shrek, who has one of the best character arcs in animated films. I'm talking one of the all time greats... a masterclass in character development.

I personally disagree with shrek being unlikeable- I dont know if its a relatability issue but I personally understand and agree with Shrek's behaviour at the begining and attitude and isnt presented in an unlikeable way- his strong isolationism and close off behaviour is something I completely agree with, like he is actively being hunted by towns with bounties on his head. Its self preservation and he didnt want what intially appears (and later acts as) a mooch encroching on his land.
His hostility to Donkey initially stems from him passively defending him and thus he percives him hanging around as wanting a body guard. Hell donkey later in the film moves onto his land and tries to stake a claim proving he was right. The fairytale creatures invade his land and house again basially because of Donkey. Shrek's realism ideology is in contrast to Fiona's idealitic fairytale fantasy wherein he just wants to get his life back to the way it was and she wants the life she always dreamed of being stuck in a tower and is lashing out at the clash. The way he goes about getting the creatures relocated by trying a non-violent approach to farquad again shows him in a positive light.
Shrek's actions are all in response to a world that has only been cruel and aggressive towards him and presumably the first person to show him kindness in Donkey immediately uses him for self-preservation. This unwilling act of kindness bites him in the ass and although it works out for the better, I dont think he is presented as unlikeable for this

I agree, Shrek has always been hunted just for existing and in the third movie mentioned that his father tried to eat him. Him keeping his walls up, looking after only for himself, and pushing people way is reasonable. In the second movie, when Fiona's father invited him to go hunting with him Shrek was willing to go because he realized that it would make Fiona happy. Also until the last movie, we never seen other ogre besides Shrek and Fiona. Shrek might have been the last of his kind (but that's my headcanon)

Well Shrek can be an asshole, considering his dad tried to eat him and the entire fucking world despises him simply for being an ogre, I'd say even in the first movie he wasn't that bad. At most he was somewhat rude, but no more than an average grumpy middle aged man would be.
I also doubt he believed the fairy tale creatures would be in danger because of his deal. They were all cheering for him when he announced his plan.
I never found him unlikeable. Except maybe in parts of the (not very good) third film and the beginning of the fourth film, where he actually die some really bad things. Otherwise he was far too charismatic and wasn't nearly immoral enough to be unlikeable.

I still really like shrek 4, Rumplestiltskin was devious and a pretty good villain who presents high stakes and it focuses on shrek and donkey’s relationship more while adding more depth to Fiona. It also takes the “I wish things were back to normal, after stale life” and slaps him in the face in an emotionally satisfying way. It isn’t perfect and but is underrated.
Shrek 3 could’ve been great but felt like they gave up half way through

6:58, even in Shrek the Third, when admittedly the anti-Ogre prejudice from the first two films have lessened it’s revealed that when Shrek was a child his father tried to eat him (which might in hindsight strengthen Shrek’s reasons for reacting the way he does to Harold asking if he would eat his young in Shrek 2) and his reason for concern is because he views himself as a monster and as such doesn’t think he would be a good father to them. Those actually link to the characterization and character development you’re talking about

Shrek 1 was fantastic, Shrek 2 was great, Shrek 3 wasn't very good, Shrek wasn't to shabby. I guess Donkey was my favorite character, but Shrek was good as well. It was just the magic of all of them together that made it work.

i'd recommend you watch schaffrillas's video on shrek forever after. He makes a really good point on why that movie is actually really good, that it isnt just a boomer dad wanting to go back to ¨the good old days¨ and that instead makes a really good character arc for shrekto learn to love and apretiate the things he has (also that going back to ¨the good old days¨ invalidates all evolution as a person and things he has archived )
Shrek the third is the movie that ruined shrek and turned the franchise into a joke in the eyes of the general public when if it werent for that movie's existance shrek would be as good as a trilogy as kung fu panda ( amazing first movie, amazing sequel, and a worse but still really good third)

Shrek forever after was a good movie though. The 3rd tainted the series but 4th is quite good.
A good and funny villain who has enough reasons to hate shrek, shrek coming terms to accepting being a father for his family etc.

U say he is one of the best characters ever written and yet u are clearly not adequately invested in him to say the quantity of his arc in the trilogy. YES trilogy. Shrek the Third does not exist. Shrek Forever After IS NOT a lame movie and nothing to get lambasted over. This movie is his arc where he gets to learn to love himself and what he has. What TRULY occurs after the TRUE happily ever after. So weird how you don’t realize that and it takes centuries or infinite time for people to fathom this. It’s been a decade and two years since the fourth installment was released and yet people are still condemning it, saying it’s worse than Shrek the Third.
Wow I think The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film ever, The original trilogy is kinda boring and bland and fatiguing and I don’t get it why people bestow it praise
