An intelligent life form who turned the oceans against the humans being who mistreated it so much for so long with pollution and overfishing. What a interesting concept.
Read the book back in 2005 and loved it! What an extraordinary author. He distanced himself from the series though. They changed so much and definitely not for the better. Totally understand him after watching the series. What a shame what they made out of this great book!
@@LootFragg Ok but huge spoil alert! Don't blame me 😉 Frank Schätzing put so much effort in writing a story that is almost realistic and full of high level information but yet entertaining. He went to different universities as well as geographical and nautical institutes and did research for several years in preparation for the book which you can absolutely experience while reading it. There were even readers who thanked him for saving their lives after the devastating 2004 tsunami because he portrayed the different stages of a tsunami in great detail. Especially how dangerous it is when the water crawles back into the sea. In the series? Lots of scientific nonsense. For example the woman in the ocean at the end. Her body would be destroyed under water pressure, bones crushed, blood vessels burst. Instead she is floating like an angel without any injuries and even surviving this? The Yrr live on planet earth too, they cannot change physical laws. Also I miss the global dimension. Where are the governments, military, climate activists and so on. Humanity is being attacked and forced into war, the world is about to collapse, but only this small group of people reacts? I miss also several important characters and storylines. Of course the writers needed to cut things out, the book has around 1000 pages, but why replace it with new stuff that is not needed at all for the story? What annoyed me most though is that the Yrr are somehow portrayed as evil and not very intelligent while they are as intelligent and no worse than mankind. They are ruthless but they are also defending their world. Their world that humanity has exploited and poisened for decades by overfishing, exterminating species, dumping chemicals and nuclear waste in the ocean etc. In the epilogue the question comes up if we humans really are the crown of creation. Nothing like that in the series. Schätzing said in an interview the writers should have had more trust in the narrative of the book. Think so too. The series does just not come close to the book.

Tried to read the book but I don't know if it was the translation or what but it was the most tedious thing I have ever tried to trudge through.
In my memory, even in the original language, the book is very dry, kept in a very neutral, observer-like tone, and most of the book details the slow realization of things happening over time. There isn't much action for a long time. That's intentional. It adds a lot to the slowly unraveling horror by showing uncertainty and narrating events in a factual manner. Been a long time but the impression stayed with me. I loved how it was just a bunch of unrelated people researching stuff and finding something odd, until they started connecting the dots.
