Best depiction of wave size I have ever seen, amateur or pro.

Only one in sept 1980 in the North Sea, 75 miles or so off the Jutland. Force 9, seas quite high (I would have said 10 meters, but that would have been wrong : 5 meters was more like it, maybe 4 !…). A 9 tons and 11 meters sailboat behaving like a dinghy is something to experience only once. Boat broached, heeled 55 or 60° with mast being very close, or so it seemed, to being parallel to the steeping wave. Inside a real mess, a knife pined on the roof. And NO we didn't laugh !…

Not a knockdown, just a helmsman that got beam to the sea.

    most scary camera angle ever!

Man, from the camera angle I thought you guys may get knocked down and break your stick on that one!!!! Tough choice to either change your angle of attack into the waves and steer into them some more for a much rougher ride, or ride parallel for a smoother ride but risk being sideways on a huge breaking wave and getting knocked down!!!

Not a storm; just a small gale. Sea is very manageable.

I’m so glad I’m not competitive, zero interest in this kind of sailing.

    doesn't seem a knockdown to me …
But yes wind and sea were strong and maybe becoming dangerous depending on the crew and boat…
But never hear someone laughing after a knockdown !…

Yeah Vincent below me has truly been knocked down too lol, to whoever made and entitled this video, you will know what one is if or when it does happen, you will be within 10 degrees Of DDW flying everything you can find halyards for because its insane surfing 60 foot and breaking ground swells lol, you will have very little warning without sage crew keepin an eye on the wave troughs from the peaks where it has a view that expands the horizon for rouge waves man because its just that big out there at that time. It happens when there isnt a true surfer / sailor at the helm and nobody paying close enough attention for the conditions, you drop off one of these waves and go damn near vert boat shakes sounds like a freight train its exceeding its designed hull speed so far into the realm of extreme when rounds up man in the middle of surfing down too much sail it happens when a boat rounds up to the solid matter sideways BIG BIG wind with downwind sails in BIG BIG water man I expected this video to be ending in a green completely underwater bubbly jaques cousteauesqe chaotic mess lol, peace, keep an eye on your telltales man

SnakeRiverFishing Oh yes. Been there, done that, many times over. Ok I admit its not a full knock down but to your average person its close enough, and caught on film. The best one I did was surfing a southern ocean swell in an Open 60 (Hugo Boss) when we got caught in a massive set in some big breeze and near pitch poled the thing. Rigged the chainplates clean out of the boat and dropped the rig over the bow. Messy. Had to jury rig it with the boom as a mast for the 2000nm to cape horn before before getting a tow into Ushuia. Now I have been involved with 9 dismastings in my 150,000 ofshore sailing miles and in every ocean on the planet. 3 rudders, 1 keel, 5 booms....
Anyway, As I said, been there and done that......

BooBooNZ 77transpac on a cal 40 5th night out, I cant remember exactly but 5 or 7 boats dismasted that night should be in the records, wouldnt be here to share without a knife on me at the time. It was almost as insane and being beat in by a jury rigged boat lol,
