Reminds me of that Episode from Friends when Ross was moving a new couch.... " Pivot.... Pivot..... Pivot...." LOL Seriously, you always have the best tutorials!
As a HAWAIIAN I have learned over many years > If you cut out a piece of heat and bond with the Hawaiian applique, that can be used to iron down and hold applique instead of glue. Its solf, smooth and holds well without no lift spots. I'm Hawaiian and have been doing this my whole life- 65 years, first by hand, then by machine.. Heat and bond lite> saves time, flustration and the glue mess on fingers. Heat and bond will keep freying down to almost 0 also, so no need for any stablerlizer. Thanks for showing my culters lost art.
Thank you for that excellent tip. I was wondering about using heat and bond for this. My cousin’s daughter is having a baby. And the baby’s grandfather who lived in Hawaii passed away before he knew he was to become a grandpa. So I want to make a Hawaiian inspired baby quilt. Between your tip and Donna’s video, I feel confident about it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video! My husband and I went to Hawaii a few years ago to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and I stopped into a quilt store there and picked up a kit on how to make a Hawaiian pillow, but I had no idea on how to do the appliqué! Now I do thanks to you!
Hello Donna, Oh My Gosh!!! I have always wanted to make one of these blocks or maybe if i'm brave enough, a quilt. Since i'll probably never make it to Hawaii, I may as well make a really nice travel bag, pillow or quilt. You are a very good teacher 🙂❤
Hi Donna. As a retired teacher, one of the tricks I used to cut out a tracing with multiple layers was to staple the layers together, whether cutting out paper or fabric. Just don’t staple on the cutting line, then remove the staples when done! This keeps the layers from shifting! I really like your tutorials! You are a natural teacher!
Ouch!!! Donna would wind up with a palm full of staples. She enjoys patting and smoothing the fabric, as do I. Not to mention having to pick the things out without fraying the fabric. Maybe good for paper craft, but I wouldn't try it with fabric.
I love your vídeos. I always want to learn . Now I have time to make. I am Brazilian. I have dificult to understand all you say but I will tray. Have a nice day. Buy.
I’m not really interested in making a pillow, but the appliqué tutorial is perfect for another project that I had to put aside because I was unsure of the appliqué. As always, thanks Donna and team!
Thank you! Perfect timing....I'm just finishing a quilt with these designs in all batik fabrics...I wanted to make pillow shams to go with it (it's for my son and DIL) and these are just perfect! Now I'm so excited to see it all finished and quilted.
Best appliqué tutorial I have seen. I have used fusible appliqué to add leaves to a quilt using fabrics from the women in my life Eg. An old skirt of my grandmother’s. Now I am not so scared to machine appliqué them on for extra security. THANK YOU!!!!!
When I applique, I use freezer paper, to make the pattern - trace onto the dull side, and use the shiny size to adhere to your fabric. So easy to cut your flower.
Auch hier in Österreich werden deine tollen Quillt bewundert. Ich danke dir für Ideen und Tip die du vermittelst. Ich liebe es einfach zum Frühstück deine Videos zu folgen. Danke und liebe Grüsse Melitta💋
Very very nice Donna. I have always admired your no nonsense style of teaching. Always to the point exact instructions and teaching With happy smiling face... thank you for all your teachings
I loved this tutorial. I love the Hawaiian pillow. I am not sure I will be making one, but I have a bunch of Teddy Bears that need to go on squares. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
As a new quilter (working on quilt #4), Donna, you have been my inspiration! I watched a number of your UA-cam videos before making my first 30" x 36" quilt, and felt confident to cut and sew. Thank you Donna for yet another inspirational video.
As an artist and quilter, I absolutely LOVE Hawaiian Quilts; their bold graphic designs are amazing to me. I have visited quilt shops while in Maui; my husband had to use dynamite to get me out of the shops 😁 I have researched many Hawaiian Quilt designs and their meanings/stories/folklore behind the designs. I've drafted my own designs; time to get busy! Thanks, Donna. Your tutorials ARE inspirational and great teaching vids! Much Aloha & Mahalo to you❣
WOW! I especially like that you showed how to position the needle when doing the appliqué!! That has been a problem for me, especially when there are curves!! I love your tutorials because you explain everything and never seem to be in a hurry.
As therapy for boredom I found this amazing website. I'm a quilter and this lady is definitely a good teacher. I find her style is easy to follow even for us elder ladies. Many thanks for this. I will subscribe.
Hi Donna, I started some Hawaiian blocks a loooooong time ago. I was actually hand appliqueing them! I would work on them as we did little road trips. Well, I have a whopping 4 done ! 😂 All those inside curves ! and outside points ! were making me a little crazy 😜 I decided to pullout that project bag once again. I'm thinking of mixing in a few machine stitched blocks. Thank You for re inspiring me to get those long ago stored blocks out and into the light once again. 😉
I have just found you recently and I have to say this: You are amazing!! Your explanations are clear and precise and the little tips you throw in are absolutely great. Your creations too are gorgeous. ❤❤❤❤❤
Joanne these pillows are absolutely lovely. Everyone will comment oh look ink spots, were you at a psychiatric doctor lately, then you can all have a good laugh...i think they would be a great crowd opener...besides they are gorgeously designed and will charm your house up. Enjoy everyone...!!
Very nice . Donna you are an amazing teacher ! I have learnt so much from you. Thank you for sharing your expertise in quilting, and sewing. You are so calm , organized and a pleasure to watch on You Tube.
Hi Joanna, I enjoy all if your videos, I'm practicing by muy own with this craft that muy mother use to do. She's not with me anymore, but I have all their fabrics and I'm trying to learn yo honour her. And I'm learning with you. Thanks from Santiago, Chile. Best wishes and stay safe. 🤗
I prefer to use Heat"N Bond when I applique. It isn't messy like basting glue can be, you don't have to wait for glue to dry, and I find it holds down the cut edges of my applique pieces just as well as the glue does when zigzag stitching all the raw edges. Love all your tutorials Donna !!!!!
Wow. This tutorial couldn't have come at a better time. I just purchased a Juki HZL-F600 Exceed Pro Special Quilting and Sewing Machine and I plan on doing several applique projects. Great tips with the gluing and computer paper backing, will use them. Thanks Donna, wonderful tutorial as usual.
I lived in Hawaii for 4 years and I absolutely love their quilt design!! They are beautiful!! Thanks Donna for this amazing tutorial. You always inspire me with your tutorial. Thank you!!!
I am in awe of your talent. I struggle to use a rotary cutter for straight lines let alone using scissors to cut wavy ones. Thank for you expertise and skill :)
Hi, Donna. I love this project! Have always been intimidated by Hawaiian appliqué, but you make it seem doable. Also appreciate that you keep supplies simple, so we don't feel we have to go out and buy a bunch of stuff to do a project. I also would love a future snowflake winter pillow design!
Thank you Jordan for the copy paper hack! I made a Madonna True Blue silhouette for the back of my Levi Coat and I had a moderately intense sewing session but I was successful in keeping the cut out flat to the backing. Had I known about the copy paper I’d had gone so much quicker! Next time!😂
Much appreciation for your fantastic & free tutorials 💗 Never thought I could or would tackle Hawaiian style but you made the technique approachable. Thank you so much!
Hi Donna, thank you for sharing another great tutorial. At the beginning this tutorial seems hard, but as I watch the video it is not so difficult. I think I will give it a try. Again, thank you.
Donna you and Jordan fabrics Inc. Are just fantastic. How you come up with so many ideas is amazing. It makes me feel alive and inspired ... Now I just want to have a go and see what can be done with this idea besides pillows, perhaps on a dress etc. Or a bunny on a child's quilt. Thank you.
This pillow reminds me of when I was a kid and used to cut out paper snowflakes. Oh the ideas that come to mind. Thanks for the awesome memory and tutorial.
Great video. Thanks Donna. Just a tip, if when you cut you can keep your outside fabric in one piece, then you can get two pillows from this fabric. The second pillow is a reverse applique of the first.
Thank you so much for the tips for using paper for stabilizing while sewing your blocks. You are a great teacher Donna I always look for your videos. You have really taught me a lot.
Wow! The first quilt I made, only 18 months ago, comprised 63 QAYG madcap, personalised applique cats. It took 4 months and I loved every minute - especially the satin and blanket stitches. However, today's gorgeous block references my next project: making indigenous theme quilts to try to bring some hope and support to young BLM inmates in Sydney AU. ⫷⫸ Thanks 🙂
Turned out very nice ! 😍 Every time the viewer feels the process of the things You make looks very simple.....That is your skill of doing things and presenting them in the right way actually ! You are a great creator ! 👌❤️
Love your tutorials with all the details and tricks, using the glue instead of heat&bond is great and much much better, especially that it washes away. Thank you.
Reminds me of that Episode from Friends when Ross was moving a new couch.... " Pivot.... Pivot..... Pivot...." LOL Seriously, you always have the best tutorials!

I started this project this afternoon and used your "staple the layers together" method while cutting and it was really helpful! Thanks!
Ouch!!! Donna would wind up with a palm full of staples. She enjoys patting and smoothing the fabric, as do I. Not to mention having to pick the things out without fraying the fabric. Maybe good for paper craft, but I wouldn't try it with fabric.
@@lucygray6162 Neither would I.
FINALLY! Years ago I tried Hawaiian Applique. Now I know what went wrong. I needed a PAPER BACKING!
THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Yes, Queen! Glue! I've been watching Hawaiian quilting and all the basting puts me off! Glue is the ticket! Thank you!
Such a respectable person you are, i like evrything you made well only your Channel is trusted channel.
Many thanks Donna. Lots of wonderful ideas and techniques.
I just love how you explain things to use its more understanding😍😍
I love your vídeos. I always want to learn . Now I have time to make. I am Brazilian. I have dificult to understand all you say but I will tray. Have a nice day. Buy.
Thanks Donna for another great video.
It's done very nicely, thank you for taking your time to teach how to applicate. Love it.
I learned something new from you today. I am glad I saw your tutorial. You are so creative. Thank you. Sandra B.
It’s a lovely cushion cover. Thank you for the free download. Greetings from the uk .
Beautiful! For the life of me, I’ve never been able to wrap my head around appliqué until this video!
You have been teaching me so much. I am a new quilter and I have been watching all of your videos.
Thank you
I have to say, Donna, I love your style... clothes, makeup, nails, hair, all lovely... topped by your smile, and the quilt was cute too.
What a wonderful pillow Donna! Beautiful!
I’m not really interested in making a pillow, but the appliqué tutorial is perfect for another project that I had to put aside because I was unsure of the appliqué. As always, thanks Donna and team!
Excellent video graph! I could see all the detail up close. Nice tutorial. Thank you 😊

Love the applique idea and quilt is pretty
Best appliqué tutorial I have seen. I have used fusible appliqué to add leaves to a quilt using fabrics from the women in my life Eg. An old skirt of my grandmother’s. Now I am not so scared to machine appliqué them on for extra security. THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks Donna for a great tutorial. I was so challenged, even on which side of the folded fabric to place the design. Now I get it--Thank you!
When I applique, I use freezer paper, to make the pattern - trace onto the dull side, and use the shiny size to adhere to your fabric. So easy to cut your flower.

These will be GREAT for memorial pillows from dresses!
Great pillow! And the giveaway is the quilt I made from your tutorial for a wedding gift! Enjoy whomever wins it. 💖

I read a book about Hawaiian quilts. This will give me a chance to try my hand at it. Thank you so much Donna.
When I'm doing these, I hold the layers together with Wonderclips to prevent the layers shifting, it works a treat!
I would love a video on how you and your husband built your business and how you work together!
Thank you so very much for making tutorials that are easy to follow! Yours are truly the best!
Would make a beautiful winter/Christmas wall hanging... 3 down and perfect width finished for a French door...
