I really enjoyed this lesson and wish i could record these lessons for future use. You can use a used fabric softener sheet as a backing for your applique and you wont have to spend any additional money on soft backing. it works well.

great way to recycle the used dryer sheets. And it will smell pleasantly at the same time.

WOW - I have always had trouble with applique that I just don't do it. I just throw my hands up and say, "Forget it." I was half way through your video, hit pause, turned on my sewing machine, :) and I have that stitch !!! I did it. I did it. I did it. Now to calm down and watch the last half of your video.

I found this video to be the very help I needed to understand applique. I usually use an iron on method that I then sew. This sewn applique gives more of a 3d look. I can't wait to try. Very clear instructions. Thank you.

This is brilliant, my machine is straight stitch only and this video helps as I now know how to get the shapes hemmed inside, I was thinking I would have to try and push the hems under as I went, the vilene method is so easy

My favorite method if applique, needle turning applique is so very tiresome on my hands, so this fits the bill nicely. I have used the used dryer sheets for backing which is a great recycling aid. Thanks for your relaxing, pleasant tutes.

I use fusible interfacing, flipping the fusible out and pressing the applique before stitching.

I'm a new quilter and have been wanting to try some applique but was not thrilled over the hand stitching. I'll definitely try this! Suggestion: it would be better to see the stitching from your side of the machine.

Thanks Susan, I like the use of Vilene as I have started a leaf applique design and the turning in the points of the small leaves has been a bit frustrating to get them 'perfect' Most helpful and well explained.
I like to do a stitching sample on a scrap to be sure I know exactly where my presser foot should go along the edge of the applique, and try out different stitch lengths and widths to select the one I prefer. This is especially valuable with a machine which has blind hem stitch but not buttonhole stitch.. it's also a good time to test what thread color looks best.
The US generic term for your interfacing is ",non-woven sew-in" or "non-woven non- fusible".
Excellent video, perfectly paced. I have used this technique in the past but you have given me two new tips: using extra fine thread and your tie-off method.

thank you for such a clear demo and a very useful technique. If you don't have Vilene than perhaps a very thin cotton fabric would do as a backing?
Hi, it would be just as easy to trace the design, without making a template. I was making a quilt with a repeat design and so I found it easier to make a template, which I won't lose!

Thanks for response. For some reason I hate to make plastic templates. Did it once years ago and never had use for them again. I really don't appliqué but think it's about time I do a project now and then. Am working on a Christmas tablerunner and used the stitch wichery fusible. However, wanted to see what alternatives they were without all that turning under and time consuming methods, but found you and am encouraged to use your method instead of fusing. thank you again. This was so helpful! I have a sampler quilt with 30's replica fabric I've been working on for a few years and the whole thing has applique on each block. I started one block with fusible and didn't like it. This technique will help me get back to this and do it so it will be an heirloom. Thank you for showing this! I wish I had a cameraman for my videos!

I was happy to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't like the crazy, long nails. I won't even watch a video if I can see them in the screenshot. I don't get why anyone would want to handicap their self.

If you reduce the weight on your presser foot, it will take those curves without having to lift it.

Wonderful and very thorough tute here....enjoyed your presentation and easy way to applique. I will do being alot of primitive type applique making sunflowers in different portions of for pillows with burlap....and the interfacing is definitely an easy way to control burlap....fusible is best to stablize the coarse threads of burlap.
