  • I hit the auction today intending to buy a 2008 Volvo semi with a 450 IXS Cummins. Unfortunately, the bank who has the lien on the truck couldn't find the title so it was pulled from the auction.
Sitting next to the Volvo was a 2005 F450 4WD with a 5 speed manual transmission. It has a V10 gasser which lucky for me has a rod thru the side of the block. That allowed me to get the truck pretty cheap and I have a 7.3 I have been building, along with a ZF6 6 speed manual transmission to take the place of the 5 speed (which won't bolt up to a 7.3).
So my plan is to pull the cab, bed, tool boxes, engine and transmission. I'll clean and paint as best as I can and strip the cab to install a 2000 XLT dashboard and wiring harness so I can install electric windows and door locks. All the 2000 or 1999 electronics will have to be used to work with the 7.3. Fuel lines, ABS and maybe the fuel tank will likely have to be replaced as well.
I have several donor vehicles worth of parts to work from so I shouldn't have to spend a whole lot on the truck. Likely a clutch, 4" turbo back exhaust and maybe a few tires.
I'll be making videos of the project, so stay tuned and hopefully I won't get too far behind.

possibly a rail road truck. hydraulic lines and pto used to lower and raise the high rail wheels while the truck was run down the track.

The hydraulic lines only led to the front, and they were large diameter for high flow I assume.

120K miles on it and being a company vehicle, they get no respect. But I'll have a rebuilt 7.3 and a low mileage ZF6 transmission that came out of a truck that the 7.3 I put in my hotshot truck which was well taken care of. The sheet metal is fine and I will replace the door panels, dashboard and install carpet out of a crew cab. The cruddy looking flatbed is going, along with the tool boxes, so really it will freshen up real well!

I'm enjoying your videos. I am kind of disappointed when you stopped making videos on the truck that was rolled over. The last video that you have you were just finishing up on the driver side valve cover.
Is there ever going to be a part 3?

I have footage that needs to be edited. Part 3 was me rebuilding the turbo, then maybe part 4 I would finish. Problem is that my Mom's health was getting worse and I had to do so much more to care for her. She passed in July and now I'm trying to run some loads to pay the bills and settle her estate. The videos are just a lower priority right now. As for the truck, it's a real pleasure to drive!

It's looking good.....really curious what they had hanging on the front of that truck, snowplow? Gear to run on RR tracks?
    Where's your dog cameos?

I'm not sure what it was. The PTO control doesn't look like any snow plow I've used. And it has about a 15 gallon hydraulic tank on the side of the truck, so it had to be something big.

@@2020HotShotTruckingLLC Yep.....On a different note....I ran across a vid by a really good mechanic..(rainman rays repairs)..he was diagnosing a problem 0n a 7.3 power stroke on a later model truck....he figured an injector went bad... so, he replaced that injector........here's where my mind got blown,.....when he says he will have to input the serial number from the new replacement injector into the truck's computer before it will work!!!!!!! And he proceeds to do just that....and it works. WTF!!!!!!!
      IS this real?????

@@Bugdriver49 Not on a 7.3. And the last year for 7.3 Powerstrokes was early 2003, late 2003 they went to the 6.0. IDK anything about the 6.0's or 6.4's.

Hell, you know me...I might have the wrong engine....blame it on too much time and left handed rolls.....LOL. Ill get back to you.....hey, is there a 9.3? All I really remember is it's a BIG diesel and he had to verify the part with the onboard system...nuts. I'll post a link.

      @Bugdriver49 2 роки тому

Hell, can't find that vid...so I googled the process....apparently it's fairly common...called "coding the injectors". where you have to input the part number into the ECM or the injector will not be allowed to work. Sorry, but this level of computer control was unknown to me and, frankly, pretty damn impressive. Something to keep in the back of my mind...just in case....lol, lol.

Winning bid was $2,000. Out the door price was $2423.20. I'll spend maybe another $2K on top of the 7.3 I've been building and have a really nice truck. Hoping to find a 48" sleeper to put on it. Would love it to be a 60, but that means having the GN hitch behind the axle. Not sure I want to do that... might lift the front axle and make it unstable.
