I own a 5050UB, make sure for those that use 5050UB or 6050UB to be on the newest firmware which is 1.04V. It makes major improvements to the color and brightness especially with the HDR filter is engaged. The 5050 UB with the update also will shift to 3 positions on 24P(must be fed to the projector at 24p also) material instead of just two gaining a massive amount of sharpness and brightness.
First projector was a Epson 3010 which I loved, went to the Ben Q HT3550, and now the LG HU810PW, which I am absolutely loving! I initially went to a Epson 5050UB, but it did not work with my room do to the long throw distance, which is primarily why I went to the Ben Q. The LG has a shorter throw distance, has a Lazer light source, is very bright, has a smart interface, and an excellent remote, I've finally found my projector for the next 5+ years, loving it!
You're exactly right Chris, I've had the 6050 for almost 2 years now and it's not perfect in every area but it's the perfect balance of all features with an awesome picture!
For my very large living room I'm debating between an 70- to 80-inch television on the one hand and a projector and a larger screen on the other. It's hard to darken the room so I'm leaning toward the former. I'd love to learn what you have to say about that choice. By the way, I second the comments from Adam Chin, SpookyApparition, and a bunch of other people here: I can't overstate how much I appreciate what you do here, squeezing so much clear and useful information into just a few minutes. Just about everybody who makes nonfiction UA-cam videos on any subject could learn a lot from you, from your obvious preparation and organization to the quality of production and editing to your lack of annoying background elevator music to your obvious and unforced enthusiasm for the subject matter. Really, thank you.
Yeah I was between the LgHU810PW and the 5050UB as well. The sharpness difference between the two is not as significant as the difference in contrast and black levels, which makes the Epson the clear winner.
Because of you I have the 5040UB. Got it refurb for $1400 and I love it. Wish I had the cash for the 5050 but the 5040 is a good balance of cost to quality.
Happy to hear you’re still loving it! I have a 6050 on the way! I was planning on the NX7 but the pricing I could get on the Epson couldn’t be beat. I’ll rock it for awhile and see what the next wave to projector updates bring in the next year or two
I repurchased the Epson 3020 last year. I really liked it when I had it in 2013 and I’m STILL a fan of 3D in home cinema. I also purchased an LG C9 77in OLED for the living room. I love both of them for different reasons!
Agree with all. I’ve had the little brother 4000 since it came out. No regrets. The 4000 series is a great value at usually well less than $2k. The primary difference is lack of the UB ultra black tech. But my room is multipurpose and I usually have some lights on which renders the difference moot.
Haha, yeah, everytime I tell my friends I have a projector and they go "Meh" and then they see my Epson 3800 at home they immediately change their minds about projectors as a whole. I agree with the fact that it just feels better when watching stuff on it vs other projectors out there. BTW, CAN'T WAIT FOR THE UST REVIEWS!! Ultra Short throw projectors are becoming more plentiful and affordable this year and I can't wait to see how they perform! JMGO's UST is most interesting with a preference for a wall instead of a screen and it has color correction so that the wall color doesn't mess up the image. Also it auto keystones if the UST is nudged off it's perfect center location and squares up the image on it's own. Anyway, great video! Thumbs up from me! Great choice in personal projector. I personally needed a little more bulb life as it's not a "theater only" projector. It's a Living Room TV replacement projector so I went a step down to get more life. Hoping to get a 20k hour projector soon tho.
Been using Epson 3800 for gaming on 120 inch screen. I can’t go back to small screen anymore. I used to have 3100 but the 4K is so much better and no more blur. It’s time to ditch 1080p.
Great video as always Chris! I ended up choosing the 5050ub projector for my build as it got my budget and seemed to offer quite a bit of features. Can't wait to start using it soon!
I personally recently went for the Epson LS500B with a Vivid Storm ALR screen and I love it laser 3 split colours no tele sceneic judder or rainbow effects
Hi hope you have the time for this one. I appreciate you videos have pointed me in the right direction before with my viewsonic px706hd loving it. Now I'm looking if what I should replace this with a dedicated projector for my theater room. It's only about 12f dep section of the room, is what I'm using even though its a bit more of an open space. So short throw ceiling mounted 135in is what I was looking at some gaming more movies and sports would like best image I could get for under 2k all in.
I had a project setup years ago that I bought from a friend. So I have a very basic understanding here. I really like what I see with the 5050 UB. The space I have to put in has an 8' ceiling and about 12' projection distance. Would the 5050 be a good fit at a ceiling mount and what size screen could I use?
Thank you for your videos and time dedicated to inform us watchers!! Now that some time has passed I am wondering with your newer reviews of the UST "Laser TVs" are you still primarily using the 5050UB? I have the 5040 Epson and have recently toyed with the idea of going ForMovies USH LaserTV... Which btw I was hoping you would also do a comparison and breakdown against your favorite projectors. I hope you receive this comment well and with much anticipation... Hope you respond. Thank you.
Great video, 2 things: 1) Epson direct refurbs (if you can catch when in stock) significantly drop the cost of entry to 5050 and you get Epson warranties 2) For all that is holy, please do as best as you can a black level test between USTs and the 5050. I have yet to see anyone anywhere do a good comparison. I have a 5040ub because i was able to pickup a refurb for a ridiculous price and am not upgrading until it dies however i have been thinking about selling and converting to UST if i can find a model that has comparable black levels and no one seems to want to do it. I know that USTs aren't going to be "as good" but maybe it's "good enough" to not worry about. Thanks as always.
I have the same projector and I would say hold on until the next bunch of UST projectors come out. At the moment I also have the Optoma P2 which is excellent for small rooms but I just love the Epsons black level and colours. It's the 5040 or TW9300 in UK.
Great questions. I think the limitations may come from the color wheel. the Hisense L5 has the lowest input lag from any UST I've seen so far. If you absolutely want to go the UST route that may be your best bet. Most UST ALR screens block ambient light from above and reflect light from below. It would be pointless to flip the screen upside down because light almost never comes from below. You could always use a non-ALR screen and be fine.
Chris would you still recommend this projector as the used ones on Amazon or right around $2,000. My optima UHD 50 just died seeking a replacement ASAP thanks for your time
I think the problem with all projectors you mentioned at the end is that they don’t have good enough input lag for gaming so it’s back to the 5050. I have the 6050 and it’s been great so far for gaming while providing excellent picture quality.
Hey Chris - just bumped into your channel and LOVE it! I'm finally within sight of building my home theater setup, and wanted to get your take. The space I have to work with is not massive: 12' deep by 14" wide (although because the rear of the space is bounded by the couch, I could place a long throw projector behind it). However, we have 9' ceilings, so at least I have some vertical space to work with. I'm leaning towards the Optoma CinemaX P2 (although I could be talked into a mid-throw). The room is not completely black, but I can dim it quite a bit with blackout curtains. For a screen, I'm looking at the Elite Screens Evanesce B, 120" 16:9. Finally, for sound I'm looking at the Nakamichi Shockwafe Pro 7.1.4 Channel 600W. I'm curious about whether I should just disable the speakers in the Optomoa (which would be a shame) or somehow use them to compliment my surround system. My inputs would be a Chromecast Ultra for streaming and a PC for playing media from our home server.
Hey man, thanks for all the info. Can you do a video (or reply here) for multiple headsets for the home theater. I have 5 seats but would like a 5 headset solution, what do i need to do ?
I know I commented on another video with a similar question lol, but you recently reviewed the LG HU810P and said it was pretty good in black levels and in some instances looked better than the 5050ub, but then didn't mention it here does that mean you still think the 5050ub is better?
Not a gamer but movie lover. In dark room use JVC nx7/ 2000 with Panasonic UB 820. JVC has frame adapt HDR with theater optimization, dial in your screen material, size, throw, screen gain & lamp hours adjusted automatically. SDR & 4K HDR never looked better. Worth the cost, didn’t pay list
I know you stated the Samsung LSP9 but what about the LSP7, which is more in my price range and right now on sale for 2799. Thanks for the great channel
Great video! I have the Epson 5040 and use Apple TV 4K and HDR doesn’t seem very good. What settings do I need to change on the projector and Apple TV? Thanks in advance for any help.
yeh its true SDR looks sharper, brighter and clearer then HDR. HDR just isnt good on any projectors apart from the JVC ones. The epson makes the screen appear washed out at times. I got mine professionally calibrated and its definetly helped a little bit but i still think SDR content appears to look better :(
Really excited for your UST Projector comparison! I recently decided to go that route rather than ceiling mounting a projector because the room in question is going to be more a multi purpose space. I really hope theres a budget pick that you could reccomend! A lot get to the 5k range BEFORE screen :/
Hopefully you get your hands on the Samsung Premier soon! Not buying till i hear your review and because its a first release, im thinking of waiting for v2 with improvements.Look forward to your review.
I have the Epson EH TW9400 here in the UK. It is the same as the 6050 that it is known as in the USA. The body of the projector is black so its ideal for a home cinema room. Great Projector and very happy with it was about £2700 when i bought it and really good for watching my 4k discs which are played using my oppo 203 UHD Player
hey, i got the same one, but how are you finding the HDR? Im finding sticking to SDR better for movies and tv shows. Using the Apple TV and mostly trying streaming 4k HDR content, or remux of 4k UHD's. Im just not sure about the HDR it seems a bit dull in comparison to SDR on this projector.
Would *love* to see your take on the Sony 325ES. I'm still running a 5040UB, and the one and only real issue I have with it is the lack of decent tone mapping for HDR content leaving me with a picture that is simply too dark in some content. I've never been able to find any picture settings that just work in HDR content. I know the 5050/6050 are better at this, but it doesn't seem like quite enough to justify buying again yet. The 325ES has my eye. I have full light control in my viewing room, so the drop in lumens won't matter if the color and HDR tone mapping are a big enough boost to keep me from reaching for the remote to fiddle with picture settings all the time.
Chris. I am going to purchase either a ust or front projectors. I can do either or in my home. I know all the pros and cons of both, as far as pic quality, including black levels, which would you pick in the $3k range?
You can't beat the pro series epsons for the money. I bought a sony 295ES only to return it back to BB and get the 6050UB from a dealer at a great price and love it over the sony.
Good review !, I looked at the Epson but finally end up with the VPLVW715ES. I'm not disappointed at all ! It's a fantastic projector. I know it cost a lot more, like >x3 the Epson, but it's a long-term investment... You don't change your projector every two years.... There was an interesting comparison between the NX5 and the 715ES from Dreamedia Home Theater, 3 weeks ago... I can't see which one is better. it's a personal test, but the NX5 is louder for sure, and bigger.
Thanks for this vid, eagerly looking forward to your upcoming projector reviews! Am coming from a UHD-51a and itching to upgrade this year to a full 4K but don’t want to sacrifice brightness or colour accuracy, was considering the 5040ub but was worried about the softness, maybe your UST shootout may have the answer!
Howdy Chris, can you review the Anker Nebula Cosmos Max and the Xgimi Horizon Pro (when it's available)? I'm interested in your opinion on these LED based 4K projectors. Thanks in advance.
Hh Chris, thanks a lot for all the fantastic and helpful material. I m checking some budget projector and I would like to know what do you think about Fengmi Dice 550 Ansi lumens (I just want a projector to watch movies mostly during the evening/night). Beside I would like to ask you which projector screen you would recommend to me in order to use the projector inside and in a low light situation in my terrace. Many thanks in advance for your help
I always check out your reviews , and I myself am a gamer and been looking for a short-throw projector but don’t want to break the bank I was looking at the hisense and waiting for you to get that Samsung but I’m looking forward to seeing the Best Buy between hisense , Epson, optima and Samsung for gaming or better bang for the buck . Thanks for your reviews.
I'm about to pull the trigger on a 5040ube for a living room setting! Should I opt for a 1.5 gain ALR screen for that use case or will that be overkill?
Hi, I have an old acer H6510BD 1080p 3000lumens , do you think the Mars Pro would be a significant upgrade in terms of resolution/brightness/sharpness/contrast? or do you think i need to go higher to a Epson 5050 in order to visually see a significant difference in quality? I am in a small basement on 100" 1.1 gain screen. according to reviews the acer tested at 2500lumens, even if advertised at 3000, its supposed to be 550 to 1 contrast but again I am not sure how it would compare to the Mars Pro? Also i have my acer calibrated per some youtube videos and brashness is lowered in order to make be best picture and contrast, and according to reviews calibrated lumens comes in at 1300, much lower then 2500. If I were to go by the numbers I could find, 2500 , so 500 less lumens but laser with increased resolution, and higher contrast 700+ vs 550, do you think the Mars Pro would be perceived visually as a significant upgrade? Or going to a 5050would be required for a much higher cost?
Hey Chris. I have epson 3800. And i painted wall for screen. Its dedicated room for home theater. No ambiant light at all. I want to upgrade. Which 1 would u recommand. Epson 5050 UB or LG HU810P. I would greatly appreciate ur reply.
Hello from Greece Chris!! These days, I'm watching some videos about projectors and I liked yours. This video is the question I have. It's the first projector for me and I need help what to choose my needs are first for playing Ps5 third person games, then movies etc. But I'm trying to find according to my place how to set up. The playroom is 5meters x 4 meters width the sofa from the screen will be about 2.5 m. Can you help me what screen and projector to choose? My first thought was for TV sony kd-75xh9096 but I want something else for the new playroom.
Is auto iris distracting? I have Optima UHD and dynamic black option makes scenes very distracting even when camera moves. Are the blacks good with auto iris off?
Hi Chris, I am thinking to purchase either Epson 5050 or LS12000. Can you please let me know if there is a huge difference in picture quality between 5050 vs LS12000?
I share your thoughts on resolution. Have you tried black screen or DIY black screen paint? (actually dark grey). Be interesting to hear your take on this. Could it really be true?
what are you thoughts on the missing motion illusion lost from the lack of DLP flicker? My epson 3700 has huge gap between pixels My 12 year old Optima HD20 kicks it on perceived resoluiton.
Are you able to share your picture settings for the 5050ub? Is there a best setting to improve the picture quality even more. Besides, I love the projector in every way you mentioned it!😃
Epson LS500 - waiting eagerly for that one - can you compare it to Optoma and LG UST as well? Cannot make the buying decision till I see your review Chris!!!
Chris is just pure info, no filler BS. One of the best resources on YT!
Looking to upgrade from my Mitsubishi HC 1500 still works, was wondering if you could do the Nebula cosmo max? Thanks love the channel! 👍

I own a 5050UB, make sure for those that use 5050UB or 6050UB to be on the newest firmware which is 1.04V. Chris you are a fantastic resource. Looking to build my first home theater and you are making it both easier AND more fun
NX7 or NX5 are awesome. Both of them you can’t go wrong!
BenQ HT5550 here. Always a fan of DLP. It’s the mirrors!
Just upgraded from Epson 6050 to a JVC NX7. Definitely a better picture. I have a room tour up on my channel. Review video coming in the future.
You're exactly right Chris, I've had the 6050 for almost 2 years now and it's not perfect in every area but it's the perfect balance of all features with an awesome picture!
I’m stoked for your ultra short throw reviews. 🤙🥳
For my very large living room I'm debating between an 70- to 80-inch television on the one hand and a projector and a larger screen on the other. It's hard to darken the room so I'm leaning toward the former. I'd love to learn what you have to say about that choice.

Just went through my second home Cinema 4010 and pulled the trigger on the 5050ub.. can't wait
Nice overview. Especially like how you break down image quality beyond just resolution
Happy to hear you’re still loving it! I have a 6050 on the way! I was planning on the NX7 but the pricing I could get on the Epson couldn’t be beat. I’ll rock it for awhile and see what the next wave to projector updates bring in the next year or two
I've never met anyone who wasn't impressed by the Epson 5050/6050. You'll love it.
Will the jvc nx7 better 3 times than the 5050 as the price? If yes i will be happy to upgrade.
I just upgrade my set for a LG HU70LA thaks to your review !!
Hi Chris .. what do you think of the Bomaker 4K UST .. supposedly it's suppose to be the same thing as the Samsung
I repurchased the Epson 3020 last year. I really liked it when I had it in 2013 and I’m STILL a fan of 3D in home cinema. I also purchased an LG C9 77in OLED for the living room. I love both of them for different reasons!

Epson 5050Ub vs Tw9400 which one is the best?
I think you should make a video about if a NAS is right for you, as you have a Synology NAS with 12TB of storage for your home theater.
130TB ;) but yes. I've been putting off that video far too long
Got the Benq w2700 love it. £1300 Mmmmm
Hi hope you have the time for this one. I appreciate you videos have pointed me in the right direction before with my viewsonic px706hd loving it. Hey Chris, I have this same projector.....can you share your settings so that I can see how mine compare
Thanks Chris, this is a great video and really helps people understand without any BS why you run the projector you do.
I’m still rocking the Epson 8350 👍🏻
So am I. What would you replace yours with if you were forced to?
I had a project setup years ago that I bought from a friend. So I have a very basic understanding here. I really like what I see with the 5050 UB. What is limiting UST projectors lag inputs?
And why aren’t there ALR screens for ceiling mounted UST projectors?
Great questions. I think the limitations may come from the color wheel. the Hisense L5 has the lowest input lag from any UST I've seen so far. If you absolutely want to go the UST route that may be your best bet.
Most UST ALR screens block ambient light from above and reflect light from below. It would be pointless to flip the screen upside down because light almost never comes from below. You could always use a non-ALR screen and be fine.
Hey Chris, can you do a video about accoustic treatment on Home Theatre please? Thank you.
I have the Epson 6030UB. It's only 1080p. If I build a dedicated HT room I may have to upgrade to a 4k projector.
you have great videos ... isnt there any ultra short throw projector to compete with these long throw projectors?
Honestly loving my optoma gt1090hdr. Not as great color accuracy but it’s crisp matched with a grey screen.
Chris would you still recommend this projector as the used ones on Amazon or right around $2,000. My optima UHD 50 just died seeking a replacement ASAP thanks for your time

Do a video that make the top 5 and the best projector outhere
I guess the real question is - do you know if Epson has any plans to replace the 5050UB with a full native 4k model?
I know I commented on another video with a similar question lol, but you recently reviewed the LG HU810P and said it was pretty good in black levels and in some instances looked better than the 5050ub, but then didn't mention it here does that mean you still think the 5050ub is better?

@@brighamyates no worries, I have the epson tw9400 I think USA equivalent of the 6050!

Didnt find Ur DLP vs 3 LCD Comparison Video!!
Lucy to be the 1000th “Like”, can’t wait to see you talk about the Samsung one.
How much do replacement bulbs and filters cost and how often do you change the bulb and filter on your Epson 5050? Thanks.
Thanks for all the info.. amazing content.. can you suggest me a projector, screen, sound system in a total budget of $4.5k.. thanks again!
Any word on when the Epson EH-LS11000W and EH-LS12000B will be released in the US? There are already a few videos on UA-cam and they look incredible.
I still like my Optoma UHD 60 because it 4k and UHD. Don't want to go back to 1080p projectors. Moving ahead. 4k and future of 8k is moving ahead.
I had it with DLP, eyestrain from the rainbow effects gives me headaches. Wish I had I gone LCD, but was sucked in by the better contrast natively.
Is there a different in quality with a short throw and these that attach to the ceilings?
Can i know which screen you would recommend fo pair with 5050ub? I have no ambient light
Any upcoming short throw projectors that are good?
Hey I would like to know your opinion on the Samsung short throw laser projector
Howdy Chris, can you review the Anker Nebula Cosmos Max and the Xgimi Horizon Pro (when it's available)? I'm interested in your opinion on these LED based 4K projectors. Thanks in advance.
Great video as always!
Was hoping you’d mention the LG laser.
Hi Chris, what are your thoughts on using epson 5050ub for a 150” screen in a dark dedicated cinema room with elite acoustic fixed screen. Thanks
I legitimately think the Hisense is going to get the spot for best UST gaming projector this year.
Can you do something on stacked projectors
I'm about to pull the trigger on a 5040ube for a living room setting! Should I opt for a 1.5 gain ALR screen for that use case or will that be overkill?
Chris, which top 3 UST Projectors and 120 inch or larger screens would you recommend for a large family room with uncontrolled lights? Thanks
Do you have an Intro to projectors video you would recommend?
Hey Chris. I have epson 3800. And i painted wall for screen. Its dedicated room for home theater. No ambiant light at all. I want to upgrade. Which 1 would u recommand. Epson 5050 UB or LG HU810P. I would greatly appreciate ur reply.
I dig the shirt! Got one just like it!
Beats. Bears. Battlestar Galactica.
Awesome content and very informative.
what are you thoughts on the missing motion illusion lost from the lack of DLP flicker? My epson 3700 has huge gap between pixels My 12 year old Optima HD20 kicks it on perceived resoluiton.
You have just about the same exact setup as I do.
I like the ease the use of UST projector.. would you plz review bomaker Polaris 4k UST projecter
Madam please review Wowoto Fusion 8k support led projector
What other projectors do you recommend that have CEC that is budget friendly.
When can we expect to see the samsung premiere in your den for a test? Any news? Best regards from Denmark!
In your opinion how would the ls12000 compare to this? Is the ls12000 a noticeably different improvement?
