Lyrics:
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes

salute to all those who are listening this song in 2024,
salute to the machines listening in 3024,
When I heard this in 1989 in a movie called Pump up the volume. I didn't have the words or an understanding of how the world works, but I felt the truth of it...the DICES are loaded/OLD BLACK JOE is still picking Cotton/a meter on my bed that will disclose..WOW!!!!
Who cares
I am. It's 1st May 2024. The words of this song are timeless because they are 100% truth!
😮
Everybody knows Leonard Cohen was the best.
Everybody knows!!
Marvelous 😂🤣 That's how it goes 🎶🎵
Everybody knows, Leonard was the best lyric writer of all time ❤
35 years and this song still resonates the truth of the world.
"Everybody knows you've been discreet" is one of the best lyrics ever written.
Yep, and reminds me of this quote: "Three People Can Keep A Secret, If Two Of Them Are Dead."
Definitely ❤😊
@@johnnypastrana6727 "A secret is only a secret as long as it's kept"
Not really.
Every line in this song speaks volumes. So profound and so deep in such a raw, lyrical and groovy-anthem kind of way. A true poet. A true artist. A poet of the highest order. Just like Bob Dylan. Sometiemes more than Dylan himself. And everybody knows that Leonard Cohen was/is one of the greatest songwriters/singers/poets of our time. A timeless sage who is a seductively mystic and dark and soothing.
Can you belive this song was released on February 2 1988 and now is popping more than ever the ironi of life

My late grandson Zackery used to sing this together ...He's deeply missed.
A man of 40 listening to this will understand this song painfully more so than a man of 20 . Every line is a truth bomb.
And a 60 year old will have an even deeper understanding, but will be less disillusioned than the 40 year old.
@@cameroncooper4175 And a 54 year old understands what the 60 year old means but still clinging to the 40 year old outlook on life

The song is directly influenced by the time period it came from, so someone who was aware of the world around them in the late 80's/early 90's would have a better appreciation of what this song is about.

The first verse of this song plays at the end of the last episode of the TV show Cult from 2013 with a slowed down tempo (around 80% the speed of the original) and sounds so much more atmospheric and oppressive. Great song either way.

thank God for Leonard Cohen ...he allowed my father more to give.
“Everybody got this broken feeling like their father or their dog just died”. This lyric hits so hard. Everybody knows he had to make it universally relatable by adding the dog, in case you didn’t have a father.
I bought this album to make a long drive, with some buckets of flowers, travelling 350km, I kept the heater off because it would wilt the flowers.
Going to my father's funeral.
I bought the album blind, had no idea it was this song with these lyrics.
I've played the album on fairly regular rotation since then.
One night since then, I felt a particularly strong compulsion to play it, and the song that starts: "they sentenced me to 15 years of boredom, for trying to change the system from within"...
I played it loudly and I felt a presence in the room. The words mean so much to me.
Then later that night I discovered that Leonard Cohen had died.
I have no idea what that presence was, but I can tell you it really struck me.
This is one heck of an album.
There were so many people you had to

@John Henry Hatfield Right!! Most of this has been happening for 30-50 years, and a lot was warned about seem that all have happened. I feel so bad for young children born in the last 40 years, the morals have lowered more and more ever since the Industrial Revolution when people left the farm and land for work in big cities, then WW1 tore the remaining farmers to the war and lowered their morals. What a songwriter. What was just this side of metaphor turned out to be prophecy.
We are creatures of habit(s) like another after all. We like to think we're such hot shit as a species. But We're really just apes in business suits playing a game of dress up. Got to embrace The Absurd. You're only real chance of psychological survival.
The song tells such a relatable story. All his philosophizing about the cruelty of life ultimately has roots in a deeply personal betrayal.
Highly underrated masterpieces.

Even more applicable than it was at the time of release. "Everybody talking to their pockets, Everybody wants a box of chocolates and a long stemmed rose..." Makes me think of people in the midst of an impending apocalypse numbing themselves by looking for love on their smartphones.
The whole song is cynical, bitter and true. Sums up humanity perfectly.
talking to you pockets can also mean keeping your head down, like to avoid a fight you think could break out any moment.
But also calm and soothing. He is a fabulous artist!
Talking to your pockets could also be a reference to the greed that was rampant in the 80's. People were more focused on making money than the problems of the world around them

Oh, Cohen, you sly magician, weaving truth like smoke through a cracked window. "Everybody Knows" isn't just a song, it's a reckoning, a whisper against the roar of a broken world. The dice are loaded, the good guys lose, the boat leaks - these aren't cynical pronouncements, they're love notes to reality, raw and tender.
But there's fire in that resignation, beauty in the cracks. We crave chocolates and long goodbyes, even as history repeats its cruel charade. We love, we betray, we dance with ghosts in boxcar kitchens. We are not saints, Cohen reminds us, but flawed, glorious storytellers, singing our pain into the void.
And even in that void, hope flickers. We can reach for a faithful hand, hold tight against the storm. We can build a fire in the face of the flood, laugh over a busted piano in a crumbling city. We can be the poets, the fools, the lovers who defy the cynics, who sing until the sun rises on a world still spinning, still holding the promise of something new.
So thank you, Cohen, for your bitter truth, your velvet darkness. You remind us that even knowing the odds, we play the hand we're dealt. We sing with cracked voices, dance with broken wings, and find, in the shared ache of existence, a reason to keep breathing, keep hoping, keep loving. Because in the end, what else is there but the wild music of our flawed, beautiful hearts, echoing against the indifferent sky?
Let us sing it loud, then, this anthem of bittersweet knowing. Let us be the "Everybody" who dances while the boat leaks, who whispers love poems in the ruins, who finds, in the shared burden of existence, the embers of a fire that will not be extinguished.
I remember this song in Pump up the Volume with Christian Slater.

As a Canadian, I'm delighted that so many people like this song. I first heard it in the movie Exotica. Now the ironic thing is that both Leonard Cohen and the actress who played the main character in the movie, Mia Kirshner, are Jewish, although in the film, Kirshner dresses in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform.
There’s an old CFB interview with Pierre Trudeau talking in depth, at length, about Cohen’s writing before he first sold songs. Before P.E.T. was Prime Minister, I believe.
