    Lyrics:
Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Well you know that I love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Your letters they all say that you're beside me now
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
For now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain
Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again

My Dad played this song over and over when my Mother died from suicide in 1980. I'd come downstairs in the evening not being able to fall asleep, and find my Dad in the living room playing the vinyl version. As a 5-year old kid, I could not understand what happened, I could only feel the intense emotions this song evoked. I am 46 now and still this song brings tears to my eyes, and makes me miss both my Dad and Mom so much.

And you know that I've always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don't need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. There’s just so much poetry to Cohen! It’s so simple yet so beautiful. The line: “we met when we were almost young” is so moving. I had the chance to go to one of his concerts in Lisbon, needless to say, it was the best one of my life! He opened it with “Dance me to the end of Love” and I just cried. It was the first song I ever listened of him, when I was only 14 and that made me fell in love. This man will forever be one of the greatest loves of my life!

My grampy loved Leonard so much. He served in WW2 and lived a hard life. He was so intelligent and sophisticated but also so romantic. He and my nana would listen to this song, even when they "split up" they lived in the same apartment complex and the way he talked about her sounded like they were still married! They did get married again not even a year later so my family has suspicions that they never split! But hearing this song reminds me of him. Leonards a very dear friend for my family. ❤

The words are so evocative and full of wonderful meaning. He wants his freedom and regrets it when he gets it. "You held on to me like I was a crucifix....." / "I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web is fastening my ankle to a stone....." " You left when I told you I was curious ..... I never said I was brave". Wonderful Mr Leonard Cohen.

I just read an article in the Guardian by Andrew Pulver, who grew up in the '80s and 'discovered' Cohen's first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen in the '90s.
Interestingly, he says that his only objection with the album is the single guitar playing, with little other background music.
I first heard the album in 1969 and loved it immediately. My feelings have not changed.
BUT - the main objections critics had about the album at the time was that the background music was too intrusive, it overshadowed Cohen's simple guitar.

Is fastening my ankle to a stone.
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.
