My Dad played this song over and over when my Mother died from suicide in 1980. I'd come downstairs in the evening not being able to fall asleep, and find my Dad in the living room playing the vinyl version. As a 5-year old kid, I could not understand what happened, I could only feel the intense emotions this song evoked. I am 46 now and still this song brings tears to my eyes, and makes me miss both my Dad and Mom so much.
My go to song for a blood good cry and to remind me to stay has always been "the suicide song" by REM or its real title "Everybody Hurts." Guaranteed to release all stress and calm me. Everybody needs A song !
I passed Mr Cohen on the street one day in Toronto. As he approached i thought i think I know this guy. He saw the bewildered look on my face and smiled. Then I realized who he was. RIP Leonard

Corona is spreading like perfume and I am here sitting in my garden alone on a basking chair, quarantined, in a small city of India tuning in with this masterpiece. Don't know if I am gonna get infected or survive but here I am enjoying, the shy breeze trying to poke me, asking me to go out but 'am resisting Oh life, hope I live enough to see you to the fullest!

It was a favourite song of my dear sister who died by her own hand 10 years ago-I still miss her dreadfully, and playing this song reminds me of her-R.I.P Heather.

But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road." - LC, July 2016
Oh lordy. This is his anthem to his life-long lover who he actually messed around. But at the end of their lives he reached out to her in a beautiful heartbreaking letter. This song is such a perfect love song. Leaves me in tears still !
I'm 21. Been listening to you since I was probably six months old. My biggest inspiration. My one true musical idol. My favorite voice on the planet. It's so very, very sad. I will always love you, Mr. Cohen. Me and my father will miss you dearly.

The more you will understand.. and in time you will be able to go back and reflect on how he was able to say it all for you when you didn't know how.. He will bring emotions out of you that you didn't even realize were within you. All the best to you in your journey of life, young one.. I sincerely mean that.. and so happy fo r you that your father introduced you to Leonard Cohen.. Not all of us in this world have that blessing.
My baby sitter in the 70's loved Leonard. She played him all the time.. Now I'm blessed with this amazing soul in my life..! Love you Leonard..! Jesus is Lord.! 💕
I feel sorry for the people who have not been able to appreciate the music of the 1960s and 1970s. This song is an example that one should know and cherish.
There’s just so much poetry to Cohen! It’s so simple yet so beautiful. The line: “we met when we were almost young” is so moving. I had the chance to go to one of his concerts in Lisbon, needless to say, it was the best one of my life! He opened it with “Dance me to the end of Love” and I just cried. It was the first song I ever listened of him, when I was only 14 and that made me fell in love. This man will forever be one of the greatest loves of my life!
This is dedicated to my ex hubby from when we were young. He passed away a week ago. This was his favorite song from way back then. Seems soothing when someone has passed.
I was in the British Army in the 70's and 80's. I was stationed in Germany in Münster. I use to drink i the students' area in a little pub called the Caffette. They used to play 60's Englush music including this track. I always liked it. When I listen to it it brings me back to the Caffette.
My grampy loved Leonard so much. He served in WW2 and lived a hard life. He was so intelligent and sophisticated but also so romantic. He and my nana would listen to this song, even when they "split up" they lived in the same apartment complex and the way he talked about her sounded like they were still married! They did get married again not even a year later so my family has suspicions that they never split! But hearing this song reminds me of him. Leonards a very dear friend for my family. ❤
My father brought me here. Sometimes my father does things that drop my feelings for him straight to zero, but at the end of the day, I always forgive him. I need him. He's the only person I've ever known who I need. I love my father.
He died the same day dumb-ass Trump was elected. I know cause my girl died in my arms that same day. I learned to play this song on guitar about a month before this happened. Still play it today. Love this song especially James version on tribute album.
The words are so evocative and full of wonderful meaning. He wants his freedom and regrets it when he gets it. "You held on to me like I was a crucifix....." / "I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web is fastening my ankle to a stone....." " You left when I told you I was curious ..... I never said I was brave". Wonderful Mr Leonard Cohen.
I've loved this song for 55 years and still think about the girl I loved and lost all that time ago and she still holds a part of my heart. The power of the song means there will be many like us.
My father used to play this song for me. He was not an amazing father but I still love him and my love for him comes out every time I listen to this song because it makes me sob. It’s so nostalgic to me and it reminds me that my relationship with him will never be the way it was when he would play this for me. I could listen to this song for hours on repeat.
Mr Cohen's music has been "imported" to Poland by a journalist, artist and singer mr Maciej Zembaty. My first touch of Cohen's music was 1974 when I start a licee school. Today I'm 65 and I still love Cohen's music.
So sad great singer, my boyfriend gave me the album, my name is Mary Ann I loved it and always think of him,Leonard was so powerful he also sings a song named Amen beautiful love you RIP.
... this evocative tune with its hypnotic guitar strumming takes me to places that I have never been ... only heard it for the first time the other day during the closing stages of a indelible passage of time ... that tune is now seared into my consciousness until the end of time ....
My parents divorced when I was young. They both couldn't listen to this song. It was their love song. I would catch my dad listening to it though. Same with my mom..... they always loved each other. When leonard died, a part of our family died too. I miss my family so much
I am quarantined and recovering from a really bad broken ankle. Today I am amusing myself listening to Leonard's songs, dreaming of Hydra, remembering my own coming of age in the sixties. Next I will watch Marianne & Leonard. I will also be grateful that I escaped my Bohemian tendencies toward life and I am still here to write & sing about it.
Every time I hear this I imagine him and Marianne wandering the streets of Hydra, and it makes me so sad. It's like the loss of innocence and the loss of what could have been. God bless us all in these tragic days.
The lyrics of this song is so overpowering that one almost forgets about the music. It warrants a listen on it's own. Especially the military style drumming - pure genius. Mr Cohen has always been and will always remain the consummate performing artist. No one else is on the same level - he is a genre on his own.
Cohen was very lucky to have found his Marianne. She loved him deeply and that helped him survive his depression and turn into the artist he became. She also suffered b/c of him with his abandonment and her abortions. Leaving him must have been painful after such a carefree decade of free love and world travel. She appeared to be so kind, so sweet. The film Words of Love show this clearly. And his performance of this song is a fitting finale.
First heard this song when 16 with my the love of my life I didn't realize the significance of the it's until 40 years later. The emotional intensity can almost be immeasurable of the beauty of the many complexities and meanings of love. Dedicated to my one and only love, Robert B.
Obrigada por essa voz envolvente e por esses poemas e por essas músicas intemporais. Quem assim vive nunca morre. Continuará para sempre nos nossos corações, amaciando os nossos dias, emocionando as nossas almas.
I love Lenard's voice and lyrics, but can I just say that the backup singers on a lot of his tracks do so much great work. This song would still be good without them, but they just kick it up so many levels.
I don't know who Leonard Cohen was but somehow his name rings a bell for some reason. I started reading about him and here I am, listening to this wonderful masterpiece. Thank you Leonard for imparting your wisdom and emotions to all of us - from the previous generation until the upcoming ones.
I had never heard of Leonard til I was 57. Heard K.D.Lang sing Hallelujah and it led me to him. Due to so many verses I learned I could sing Acapello and in key and hold that last Hallelujah for a long bloody time. I still dance to the end of love.
Ahh this song is soo melancholic and sweet! Leonard Cohen ❤💔 These songs and his voice are like a cure. After hearing this songs i started loving my name. My greetings Marianne/ Iraq 🌹
I first encountered this song in a Leonard Cohen songbook. I plonked it out on the guitar, and I wasn't impressed. Then I heard Cohen sing it and I was blown away. All these years later, it's still at the top of list of my favorite Cohen songs.
This was my FIRST introduction to LEONARD COHEN ... and it was LOVE AT FIRST SOUND! 😍💖🥰😘💞 1973 was the year ... thanks to a Canadian couple who played it for me and my BF at the time ... somewhere in Europe ... I've long forgotten where we were at the time. 😁😂 SUZANNE was the 2nd song! 👌 Just as AWESOME! 💖😍 🙏🤗 Thank God nobody can ever steal or rob us of our most precious memories.
I think we can all agree that this is a great song that has deep meaning for each of us. The imagery Cohen uses is nothing short of genius. For me it's about getting in tune with one's self and avoiding temptation at all cost. Hallelujah!!! 🙏💖👑
My Dad played this song over and over when my Mother died from suicide in 1980.

Leonard un vero top di classe ...bravo
I first encountered this song in a Leonard Cohen songbook. I plonked it out on the guitar, and I wasn't impressed. Then I heard Cohen sing it and I was blown away. All these years later, it's still at the top of list of my favorite Cohen songs.
This was my FIRST introduction to LEONARD COHEN ... and it was LOVE AT FIRST SOUND! 😍💖🥰😘💞 1973 was the year ... thanks to a Canadian couple who played it for me and my BF at the time ... somewhere in Europe ... I've long forgotten where we were at the time. 😁😂
