  • Upgraded motors from stock delta ray to "extreme pro 180" motors. They are 180 size. would be awesome if brushless were an option. makes this bird fly faster and more fun! STILL love the SAFE switch so didnt want to lose that function.
    Thank you to Bill Morley for the tips on how he did his, I appreciate it! To do this mod you will need some foam safe CA glue, two extreme pro 180 (brushed) motors, a soldering iron, some solder, patience and a steady hand :-) its easy!
    motors cost me like $16 each including shipping

    by the way, those are brushed motors, brushless is 3 leads

    Thanks man this was very helpful. If someone want to remove the gears you can heat them up and they will go off.

    You should do a video flying it so we can see if it has any more power to fly and strong headwind first as the stock motors. And as far as turbines go lol they would be way too hot and melt the styrofoam, but there are EDF's which is an electric version of a turbine engine that you could get just need somewhere for the air to go out.

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      I would love to see someone with turbines. the 180s are a definite improvement. though at full stick it does drain faster. I like to float most of the time so go half stick. There are some pretty rocking delta rays that people have converted to brushless and they are fast!

    @cornell Jeffers man I wish knew more about thrones to tell you bc that sounds pretty awesome! I do think that someone on here has done a crazy turbine version if I remember, something 70mph + or something crazy!

    nice work bro im soon to pick up mines tomorrow with the stock motor for now though quick thing i thought up after seeing you doing this upgrade do you think some turbine engines can fit on these just a wide thinking for even more speed but i guess there may be too much more configuring to do for that what you think ?

    Any updates on how the upgraded DR is running?
    Everything still working?
    No burnt out motors, fried boards, etc.?
    Also, is there any noticeable difference in the motors since one has its polarity switched?

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      Yep everything for me is still golden. Haven't gotten the nerve to try a higher lipo...haven't gotten a definitive answer how much voltage the board can take...

    From all I've read, brushed motors are not reversible. You must buy a matched set of counter-rotating motors... one each CW and CCW. Otherwise, one motor will be damaged. Is this not true?

    • @Ferrari250GTO1962
      @Ferrari250GTO1962 9 років тому

      Ferrari250GTO1962 It apperas all it will do is decrease efficiency, make it run hotter and wear it ou sooner. Still, I think those are all good reasons to buy motors designed to run in opposite directions so you won't have these issues.

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      While mostly true, most motors are designed (albeit with less efficiency) to run both directions. I don't recall these being offered by the mfr as counter rotating...

    HI Mr. McCabe, sorry to bother you, but I didnt understand if the pinion gear is removed or you just widened up the hole in the propeller to make the pinion gear fit in the propeller. Please excuse my english

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      The pinioned ended up being out of the way and not a problem so I just left them. Probably a headache to get them off...

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      Pinion gear was not removed, it was small enough to just stay on under the props, others have chose to remove but without a good tool it's pretty hard...

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      I didn't have the tool to remove the gear that came on the pinion of the new motors so I just installed it right over the top, worked just fine. If you have a puller, take that little gear off...

    BTW, my comments must seem unappreciative of THIS VERY USEFUL AND HELPFUL VIDEO. I didn't intend them to be. It's just that it's apparently very much better if one replaces the motors as a matched counter-rotating set... Xtreme ESL505 and ESL506. Also, it seems better to remove the pinon gears rather than leave them on. There are some very good instructional videos on youtube regarding how to do that... it's easy.

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      No worries, some motors, some very high end, do come as matched sets and can make a difference but with most brushed motors like these they are designed to have the ability to run both directions. Matched sets (one cw and one ccw) would run better but most companies do not sell ( including these) their motors as cw, or ccw wound. Other high end racing motors in the rc world are matched but not these 180's, switching the polarity will do just fine.

      The motors should both spin TOWARDS the body when installed right. To clarify what looking at the plane from the front, the motor on the right should spin CCW and the left should spin CW

      Mr. McCabe Before you modded the motor do you remember which way the prop turned or which motor did you mod? If facing the plane upright, the left or right motor? Also do I have to solder or can I just cut the wires and splice together then tape up with electrical tape?

    How did you get around the issue of using a brushed ESC built into the receiver with a brushless motor. Common knowledge you have to use a brushless ESC with a Brushless motor ????

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  10 років тому

      Oh, that may have been misleading. I said that some people have upgraded to brushless but then you have to change esc and all that. Here I only upgraded to a better size 180 motor. This is not brushless...

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      Maybe it was unclear, I replaced with brushed motors not brushless. You are right if I had gone brushless I would have had to change the esc but wanted to keep the SAFE aspect of flight control while still a novice to flying...

      Maybe it was unclear but I did replace with brushed motors. I am still a novice at flying so wanted to keep the SAFE aspect of this plane. But you are right if I had gone brushless which some have, a new esc would be in order...

    Hi went to connect my new motors up and when I plug in the battery they run instantly at full throttle ...the controls on the trans have no effect ..do you have an idea? I even went and plugged my old motor back in and it tio ran full throttle...weird

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  10 років тому

      that is wierd, did you mess with the board at all? I didnt touch the board at all, only unsoldered old motors and soldered new ones on. You MAY have contact with the transistors (yellow tabs on new motor) on the motor and the metal casing of the motor or to themselves? Double check. Or your controller may have the trim maxed out? That would be odd, because for the delta ray to inact the SAFE it has to be on level ground for a bit.

      I think it burns out the ESC. had the same problem.

    • @namastemyfriend
      @namastemyfriend 9 років тому

      fcmstreetfight11 Had the same issue with the engine swap. We have 3 Delta Ray's and the two we converted are now inop. due to the same problem. One of them runs instantly and full throttle the other actually runs the motors normally but when full aileron is applied, the opposite engine will accelerate causing a major aerodynamic situation, e.g. a stall. Tricky to fly even for the Chuck Yeager type. I've been researching the cause but no luck yet. However, the first conversion actually worked well for about 3 flight hours. I believe it's an ESC issue. Most likely some sort of power surge through the system took out some circuit. Wrote Horizon Hobby but no word from them yet. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy flyin the Delta Rays together. I did the mod because the plane seems to find the region of reverse command fairly easily. The 180's alleviated that situation but seemed to burn out the ESC in the process. Instead of replacing the ESC's at $80 a pop, we just replaced the entire plane for $149. Lots of spare parts and lesson learned.

      @andrewemerson2274 8 років тому

      +Kevin Donato I just added the ESL 505 AND 506 matched pair to both of my Delta Rays with no ESC problems.I did find that the ESC has 3 servo outputs very close together. Only two are used for the elevons so it is easy to plug into that third unused connection by mistake as the all 3 have the same type of connection.

    when you buy motors dont they turn one way ....can you switch the direction?

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  10 років тому

      Yes, before you final solder just flip the wires I believe on the right motor as you look at the plane from the front. In my case I just wrote with a sharply which way the turned before I started.

    • @fcmstreetfight11
      @fcmstreetfight11 10 років тому

    • @CoachMcCabe
      @CoachMcCabe  10 років тому

      Some motors require a cw and ccw rotational motors, but in this case you they are to swap. I only detached wires at the motors then soldered back to the new motor to make it as easy as possible. It flies like a champ!

    i have made the motor change too. there was no problem to install the new motors but with the original batterys from eflite i cannot give full throttle because the the motors start to interrupt like the battery is empty (voltage warnig).
    have anybody some experience with this effect ?
    or have i to buy new batteries with an higher maximum c rate too ?
    i own thre battery packs.....all full loaded......but all the time stuttering motors.
    would be nice if anybody could give me some feedback here.

      Ok they are fitted and run well. I had to take the gear cog off because they were located in a different position to yours.
      I found when the gear is removed from the shaft is very smooth. The original motor had a spline assist in keeping prop on. At full power the props flew off the shaft.
      They are glueing now so lets see what happens when it is set.
      Thanks for the info.

      @CoachMcCabe  9 років тому

      I am not sure Jeff. I have been tempted to at least try a 3s but am looking for info via hobbyzone's website that says what the ESC will handle. Some people have put brushless and a new ESC on these puppies and they really scoot, but I am still an average flier so havent gone that for yet. Would REALLY be nice to up the juice but keep the original ESC that has the SAVE mode for me to hit in case I get in trouble....which is often. ALthough I have learned the higher you are, the more time you have to recover! If you get info before me, please share...

      Yes, I definitely will. I have a 2s 7.4 I think 2000mAh battery coming in the mail and I ordered the EC2 connectors to make it all work with the stock ESC. I'll let you know how that turns out. Right now I'm building an F-16 EDF jet as we speak lol
