A couple of years ago, my uncle owned a skoda Laura (He has a superb now along with other cars). On his way to work, he hit a pothole and that was the end of the front suspension. The tire that hit the pothole got swollen somehow and he had to drive that thing to work. It was one of the deadliest things he has done. In India these VW group cars are considered one of the safest. They may be in crash tests but they're not when it comes to stuff like this. Unfortunately, there aren't many Toyota models here in India. However we do have Maruti Suzuki, which is basically the Toyota here. Their cars are stupidly reliable. The maintenance cost of a Suzuki swift for 5 years is under like 300 bucks. Insane.

In unique circumstances, cars do rust in the desert. I read a story of a car sitting the desert for years. A person wanted the doors off of the car for the restoration of another car like it. However, the doors were rusted out. What had happened is that during dust storms, dust settled in the doors, eventually filling them with dirt. Then, when it did rain, the dirt would get wet and stay wet a long time, rusting the door out.

Funny enough, I have 2 similar cars.
    A 2012 Seat Leon with a 1.4 TSI and a manual gearbox and a 2009 Lexus RX450h
I bought the Seat new and now it has 90000 miles
So far I had to replace the brake booster, Intake heat exchanger (it was leaking coolant into the intake), fix the turbo wastegate (extended the rod from the actuator by 1/3 inch), and serpantine belt tentioner and rollers (maintenance item)
The Seat is made in Spain, and yes it is less reliable then I'd hoped, it isn't a nightmare like I feared.
I bought the lexus last year from its original owner (he bought it new) with 140000 miles
There, I replaced the water pump (preventative maintenance), both rear shocks, front suspension bushings (I consider those wear items too)

I own a 2012 VW Jetta 2.5 SE 99k mi, absolutely love the little black car. I’ve had it only for a year, since it had 75k mi. It’s a 9-year old car, spent all of its life in MN and now WI, but has no rust whatsoever. Interior intact, no problems that were the car’s fault so far except that once at 92k mi I had to change the leaking valve cover gasket and the spark plugs (but those were due anyway). I did buy it with a history of auctioning for $6300. I saw the damage on the auction pictures and know it was auctioned off for $4300, so that wasn’t a bad deal considering the auction fees and the repairs made (all cosmetical). I only bought it because I had to make a decision fast (within a day or two) and my only other option for that kind of money was a plain Jane red Civic with 135k mi, 60k more than the loaded Jetta. I knew I wasn’t planning on keeping it forever, so I’ll probably sell it somewhere between 120-150k mi. Yes, I do plan on upgrading to a Toyota or Honda SUV in the future but I think calling VWs “horrible piles of junk” is relevant only if they weren’t taken care of by their owners even though they were made in Mexico.

Drove it for 6 months, the a/c compressor seized and my serpentine belt was ruined (luckily nothing else broke 😅). Got a 2000 Honda Civic ex with 198,000 miles that had regular maintenance done: timing belt change (at 150,000) miles as well as other crucial parts that should be change by that time. Still runs like a dream (it currently has 207,000 miles). Only parts I had to change, were the shocks. They were the OEM ones that came with the car from the factory😂😂😂 (solid shocks if they lasted 200k miles). *If you're planning to buy a old civic (92'-00', get an alarm installed; costs $200 to get the part with installation, by Best Buy)
