- Before Facebook, before the Internet, before 24-hour news media coverage, the place to find out what people were talking about was a place like Duke’s, the old diner on Walton Way.

I went to Academy of Richmond County 73-76, a nearby high school. Mr. Duke was a very nice person and would purchase an add in our JROTC military ball program book to support the event which was held yearly at Bell Auditorium. He had a little office. I remember he had one of those 30 caliber military carbines propped against the wall. I don't exactly remember but I think he was a Navy veteran. A nice man. Dukes was a landmark on Walton Way. I remember when it closed just just prior to my leaving Augusta in 2000. I came back many years later and was surprised when I saw there was only an empty lot where the restaurant once was. I thought someone would have bought the place and carried on the business. A end of an era.
I ate breakfast there a couple weeks every month. I was in the Early Bird Club , but I never got a key. Radio personality George Fisher and I occupy a couple of the booths facing the door. It was a great place to be for breakfast.
I loved Dukes! Went there for lunch at least 3 or 4 times a week for years!! I really believe I saw Chuck Norris there during Masters Week one year, lol. I had everything on the menu at least once. Nothing beat their chocolate pie or baked whole apple. I don’t think I ever ordered one thing that wasn’t delicious.
Love the channel. I would love it if you could do a show on my great grandmother and her establishment that she ran known as the Morris Café. It used to sit across from k mart on Washington Rd
Please email and tell us more about the restaurant. Glad you are enjoying the videos! Here is our email: mark.albertin@morris.com
I remember faintly going there as a kid in early 90s.
I ate at Duke's not long before it closed and loved the 1950's look of the diner. Considering how popular it was, has anyone tried to reopen it? Thanks Bill.
My daddy Jack Melton worked at this place. Maybe someone remembers him. He was a real jokester.
This is an excellent video and Mr. Kirby is a fine man but he needs to work on reducing "his hands from constantly moving while he talks". As a professional reporter and video presenter, you simply can't display these constant little ticks and movements which detract from the presenter or the story being presented. Meant in kindness...(and I did vote thumbs up).
And, yes, Duke's was great...best hamburger I ever ate.
@Freedom For All I am sorry that your moniker of "Freedom For All" does not include MY freedom to offer loving constructive criticism to a fine man without being told to "shut (my)mouth", by you. And yes, I am a professional videographer, having worked on broadcast staff for a number of years in both Nashville and L.A. Admittedly, however, I am not a stage choreographer...they are in a different union.
