  • In the minds of most, Augusta’s Regency Mall has been closed longer than it was open.
That’s not quite the case … but it’s not quite wrong.

I arrested 2 guys in 2006 who spent 8 months stripping copper from 96 A/C units on the roof and inside. That 1.2 million in damage made it difficult nearly impossible for the owners to sell it because they had a few potential buyers. However they weren’t interested in replacing all that copper plumbing and A/C parts.

Dang that's crazy you arrested the 2 people mainly contributing towards the downfall of Regency.

Just want to say "Thank You" for all that you do to commemorate the history of our community. I remember Regency Mall when it was awesome. I moved to the Augusta area in 1985, and Regency Mall is where I went to shop. The video was like a trip down memory lane. I was young then, and the stores were hip and cool. I watched it change and eventually close. Kind of like watching society decline. Sad, really.... but thanks for the memory of what it was, and for documenting it in current media. You are appreciated for your efforts!!!

Thanks for this blast from the past. I have many great memories of the Regency Mall and the surrounding areas. As a kid in the 80s I liked how the Regency Mall had better toy stores than the Augusta Mall (though I liked the Augusta Mall's food options better). I got to meet Jim Varney at the J.B. White's when he was doing a meet-and-greet prior to an appearance at the Bell Auditorium in the mid 80s. I remember the smell and the multicolored lights in the fountains. I remember seeing a lot of movies at the 3-screen General Cinemas, as well as the Regency 8 that GC opened behind the mall in '87. And right down the road from the mall was the Putt-Putt on Gordon Highway, which had three courses and a bigger arcade than that the one off of Washington Road. So many good times to be had back in the day. Sad to see this once-vibrant area having become so run-down and decrepit. I wish life came with a rewind button just so you could relive past memories.

I remember in the 90s being in the Richmond County Honor Orchestra and putting on concerts there. I remember the string Christmas lights. The fountains. The brown bricks and the skylights. The hotdog place and the lady at Wards trying to get you to sign up for credit with free gifts. We still have some of that Christmas stuff from wards. My first pair of glasses was from lens crafters just outside of wards. As a kid the jb white box meant underwear and jeans but all great times.

Thank you for the memories, Bill! I remember the newness of the mall and it's slide to sadness. I wish it could have been different, too, for I can still hear the joyful voices on CHRISTmas and other times I visited.
I sure hope a use is found for the property. It needs to live again!

I rember when it opened, and when it died off. I lived less than 4 miles from it. It wasn't built in the right area.

    Mr. Kirby,
You have made an amazing video documenting the Regency Mall. I probably sat in your lap when you were Santa Claus..... your documentary really touched me. So many great memories of what was once a great place to live.

It was a great mall until about 1990. Crime became a real issue.

Before Regency Mall closed there were problems with gangs at the mall, at least that's what happened to my wife and a friend in the bathroom, a group came in and thankfully my wife and friend were on their way out, after that we never went back to the mall.

I was there for a week working for Butler shoes grand opening team and almost got mugged going to my car I somehow managed to elude them but I reported it to my management team and they just told me to park at the front entrance because they were told the safety couldn't be assured in the back parking lots

I'm from Augusta and remember Regency Mall well! I remember when it opened! We were all so proud! I remember as an early teen standing in lines that wrapped throughout the second level when "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" opened! I remember many a day wandering through Spencer's Gifts, JB White, Belk and Montgomery Ward. My now wife worked at JB White there for many years. We no longer live in Augusta, but it's so sad to see that Mall close and just sit there rotting. There is so much land there, someone should develop something really cool there. Anyway, thanks for the great video and the wonderful memories of our beloved Regency Mall!

I was 5 when it opened...We lived in Hephzibah...I remember my father driving into the parking lot to take a look at what was going to be something amazing! Nearly every weekend I was up there with my family.
My mother worked at The McCrory....
So many good restaurants inside that mall. We especially loved Piccadilly and Dino's Pizza.
We actually would go "Trick or Treating" there every Halloween because it was a safe place.
So heartbreaking what this place has become.

I remember going In the 90s.. I'm really not sure why they closed it besides maybe the crime rate, but now all the crime goes to the Augusta mall now so idk why it's gone.

Recently watched a another video of a guy surveying the inside back in 2018. It was completely gutted and rusted. Really sad to watch since I grew up going there as a kid for Halloween, Christmas and Movies. Part of me is upset with officials for not working hard enough to prevent it from becoming an eye sore. Yet another part of me is upset with people in the surrounding communities who don't seem to care or make an effort to curb peoples perception of South Augusta.

I understand that South Augusta is in bad shape, but SOME investor HAS to take the first step in putting SOMETHING of value there, and in-turn, attracting other businesses to the area, instead of just letting years and years and years pass away out of "fear of crime"! Crime will always be there, but a resurgence in business/productivity will help reduce its likelihood! Would be amazing if some sort of theme park is placed there eventually, which would do WONDERS for the area!!

I remember that mall so well. South Augusta has been hanging on by a thread for a long time. The sad but true fact is that South Augusta is a dump and nothing will survive there. Some people complain about Columbia county taxes, but it keeps the trash out and is well worth it. Sad to see this part of a great city with so much potential die a slow ugly death.
