Back in the late 30s and early 40s my father-in-law and his family lived in what they called Frog Hollow. In conversation with him he talked about living on Silcox Street. He always said the geographical location was the area bounded by 15th Street, Harper Street, 13th Street and Walton Way. I realize the footprint of the new University Hospital was within those boundaries but it should also be mentioned that many of the homes demolished in Frog Hollow served as the foot print for the new VA Hospital.
I work at University Hospital, and I'm eating lunch watching this. A lot of history in Augusta
It was sad my grandmother and great aunt had homes and what the paid them couldn't buy a a house without buying one together,a lot of great memories Frog Hollow
I remember my Dad on the Augusta Fire Dept burning most of those Frog Holler houses down for training purposes.
Very interesting. I remember one of my classmates at Wheeless Road Elementary School saying something about "The Frog Hollow Boys", one day. I didn't catch all of what he was saying, but, he implied they were heavy hitters.
Many of the homes were condemned to build the new hospital. The Augusta fire department practiced their fire fighting skills by setting fire to some of those homes. My father was raised in the area and went to Frog Hollow reunions in the 80s and 90s. My grandfather was a party boss in the fourth ward .
A large part of that neighborhood on 13th street burned from arson in 1967? soon after people moved out of those homes making way for University Hospital. I'm sure the Chronicle covered the story.
