Behringer Neutron & Korg SQ1 ~ Melodicing

- The Melodicer from Vermona is a cool gadget that allows you to select a per note likeliness for that note to be part of a random sequence - somehow like that. I don't have the melodicer but tried to mimic the behaviour roughly with the SQ1. I grouped three to four steps together (that all play the same note) and have several groups of steps through a major scale over one octave. So I have a coarse selection of the likeliness for a note to be played, simply by selecting zero up to three or four steps of a group. To randomize the envelope trigger I combined the free running Neutron LFO with the SQ1 gate through the S&H. Only if LFO output is high and gate is high, the envelopes are triggered. Sounds more complex than it is, here are the full patch notes:
SQ1 CV A goes to Neutron OSC 1+2. SQ1 Sync out (works also with gate A/B) goes to S&H Clock and to Att1 CV. The Neutron LFO (square wave) goes to S&H in. S&H out goes to Att1 in, Att1 out goes to E.Gate1. The Neutron output goes through an external delay (in addition to the internal one, for maximum delay, like with public transport).
Great jam.
I have the SQ-1 rigged up with my Model D and I absolutely love it
Absolute love it!
Very nice. It's got a vibe like Kraftwerk's Franz Schubert.
Very much like public transport. The algorithm read my mind and put this video first thing in my feed. This weekend I'm stacking various delays and stacking various sequencers and feeding all of that in and out of my Uli-synths. It should be one hell of a birthday party 🥳
This is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your patch notes. Great stuff. Have a fantastic weekend, and happy music-making!
Thanks a lot for your comment! Very much appreciate public transport, although it's often a pain in the back here... That's why I take the bike ;)
Very cool dude. I’m just getting started with the neutron and it’s daunting trying to figure out how to make cv connections that make sense and produce predictable results. Your videos like these are a true inspiration.
Thanks! Neutron is like a small modular, which is pretty cool, but it takes some time to get comfy with it.
Nicely done, I now regret having sold my SQ1 last year. This triggers my GRAS (Gear Re Acquisition Syndrome) 🙂
Know this situation well... However, the SQ1 was never on my "perhaps I should sell it" list, because it's so incredibly handy.
@@synthesizer83 Got another one 2nd hand. Very happy 😉
Been using a keystep with my neutron but this just made me buy the sq1 immediately! Thanks
Great vid. I foresee a purchase in my future.
We’re suckers for Echo!!
Thank you.
Good choon 👏
Very nice!
Fantastic work!
Sweet !
Nice demo!
Very cool !
Sweey sounds!
Plain but powerful
Sounds good, this. Cheers for posting. What have you got the sq1 set to?
Hi! SQ1 is set to random mode and I just activate and deactivate the steps.
Whoa😮 b e a u t y f u l l! ! !
How do i make that patch 🙏 i have to pinch myself not to let tears stream.... 4 real... Also hard time deciding if the neutron, k-2 or pro 1 is going to be my first analog Love 🎉 but the sound sculpture you bring with this track makes me seriously want neutron... I make ambient...ps. can i 'play' notes on the Korg sq 1 hooked up to the synth?😊
Neutron is very capable, the Pro 1 is limited to one voice only and the K-2 is a blunt copy of the MS20, so I would definitely go for the Neutron (although the Pro 1 also sounds fat). The SQ1 is not a keyboard at all, but by quickly activating and deactivating the steps (which is very easy with the SQ1), you can actually "play" notes.
I too love what Vermona’s Melodicer; however, as a modular newbie on a strict budget, it’s simply out of my range of affordability right now!
Given I already own a Neutron and an SQ-1 and am looking into buying an affordable quantiser for my next purchase, is there a way - perhaps by patching in an external Doepfer A-156 before the Neutron but after the SQ-1 - of transposing the entire sequence in a musically-relevant fashion?
I love stochastic material (especially when combined with the synchronised S&H control of a filter to add some variability) but find such repetitive sequences, well, a little bit monotonous after a minute or so!
Any help or advice gratefully received...
Yes, you could chain the Doepfer quantizer in between the SQ1 and the Neutron, and the 156 also has a transposition input. The 156 also has a mode switch to select different harmonics (major, minor, chromatic), it's a very handy tool!
