Can Dr Meaker make a drum & bass track with just a Behringer Neutron?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2022
- With two decades of experience in the game, Dr Meaker lynchpin Clive Meaker has carved out a reputation for himself amongst the UK scene, for both his infectious, bass-heavy productions and his live shows, which see Dr Meaker adapted into a full live band complete with drums, live bass, vocalists and a horn section. For his track The Neutron, Clive challenged himself to make a full release with just a single synth - Behringer's semi-modular Neutron. We caught up with him to see how it was done.
See more of Dr Meaker and his studio workflow in issue 387 of Future Music. Out 23 August.
The Neutron is out now on Symmetry Recordings.

This sells the Neutron more than any video Behringer made.
Facts
Right? It totally does.
True
the work on the arrangement is really next level and it's where i guess most people ( At least me ) fall short! the sound design part isn't so complex but putting the sound together from those basic building blocks is definitely black magic!
Exactly!!!!
would be great to fet another tutorial on this
so true
As I'm a complete newb the way he makes sounds was just great to see. I'd waste so much time making bad sounding noises!
The neutron is my first synth, bought it used on a whim as the price was so low. I thought it was like the crave so expected to make sequences right out of the box. Still £165 on the neutron and two controllers, no regrets.
Good work, the Neutron is great, it has more sweet spots than a cake factory!
🐐
Cheers Ed! 🎂 heheh
@@clivemeaker4738 It ended up being more than i expected, phat enough i reckon ;) Just curious about what other hardware and processes you used here. You mentioned a preamp, i'm guessing it's the 1073 clone ? Also, did you use the API2500 at all ? I might actually get a Neutron, but i want to stay all otb with hardware for that set-up. Having a nice chain for the Neutron to feed into will be the key.
Thanks Dr for opening the surgery and for attending to our sonic malady with such skill.I wanted to be a doctor - but i didn't have the patience.
Not my type of sound but what a beautiful demo ! This video had to exist. Well done !
Thank you for these examples. It will be so much useful for many people!
so happy I chose this as my main synth for standalone and eurorack duties. Built the rack off this footprint, now expanding because modular is so much fun (and addictive). grrrr8 tutorial/demo
I’ve zoned out for hours making various baselines on the Neutron. It’s got many sweet spots and you’ll have many happy accidents if you give it some time to play around. I’m going to try this challenge when I get some time.
For the kick I’ll probably layer it up to get more punch, same with the bass.
What a great tutorial and can be applied to pretty much any synth
Nice work - the Neutron Sounds very cool in this Track 👍👍
love thisz been obsessed with the tune
Nice one. Neutron is super powerful.
Juste a note: Noise level does not control the noise output from the patch bay. You can turn it to zero and still have noise coming out.
Super dope production!
Excellent, thanks
Dude there no competition on youtube on the flexibility of this synth. Even the fact that you didn't go ham on after fx! TAG BEHRINGER
Serum looooool
@@agatheboulanger5807 This is a hardware discussion. Vital, Surge, Serum, etc are different beasts from a hardware mono synth.
@@agatheboulanger5807 it literally say this synth dude.
This was just posted in Behringers official synth and drum FB group 👍🏻
Yea! Good stuff Clive! 🔥🔥📯📯🏆🏆
What an awesome showcase of the Neutron!
Nice!🤓I will be receiving my Neutron this week and can’t wait to try this method. 👍
This is rad! Thanks FM + Dr Meaker.
If anyone watching this lives in Sacramento, you can come borrow a neutron for free from MusicLandria and see where it takes YOU creatively.
Such a wicked synth!
Nice one for Massive !!! 💚🎛
nice work 🔥
Sick visuals
Nice job man 👍
Lots of good ideas. Thx.
Tnx for much inspiration! :-D
Love it all!!
nice one, thank you
Really sick
Ayooo, smashed it ♥️
Would be cool to see some of the processing you used to mix the song!
Oh Hell Yes!! 👏
Bro...super dope
I bought this track when it was out, only just stumbled upon this video whilst contemplating buying a neutron, I guess that’s my mind made up then!
The noise I forget about THAT!
Bad ass synth and a bad ass song
Dope track !!!
Amazing 😍
Pure wizardry Clive 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
sick result
Video with mixing process of this tune would be great!
Litteraly did the exact same "exercise" with my neutron today it's so fun
Wow so informative
Definitely need to buy a neutron now! MC-707 and this would be sweet combo for dnb jams 😍
Cool!
Sounds killer
🔥🔥🔥🔥
this video is just perfect! thank you so much for it! highly inspiring :)
if you want to up the stakes even further, try making dnb with the Crave ;D
Top bannanana, learned a few good tips, cheers.
Hey, I'm reallllyyyy interested in his outboard gear, as well as plugins. because that mix is very nice.
Amazing 😁
funny how that popped up after i amde one with u-hes diva only^^. well almost :D, cos some fx were involved. nice one
Wicked.
Fire track m8
Beast!
Wow very nice friend
Anything more about the actual recording process? How to address latency? What pre amp was used (mentioned at the start of the video)?
legit!
Why no saw waves used ?) 😎
I bought the neutron about 2 years ago to learn a bit about modular, so this was SUPER usefull. Something ive been wondering tho is, what patch cables go to the behringer? Ive lost some of the original ones and i dont know which one fits when searching for new ones to purchase. Help is appreciated!
UA-cam has all your awnsers
Any Eurorack patch cables, or in other words, any 3.5mm TS cables.
OK, I suck. I have a room full of gear and my DnB isn't that awesome. I'm holding out for the Neutron MK II, although, maybe I'll still get one of these.
It's a good synth. But I feel a little GAS when I see the Proton coming. And then there's the VCS3.
Only problem - i never used a DAW, would need 30 Neutrons and Sequencers.
👌🏻
Noice. I just bought my first ever synth and it's the Behringer Wasp. It hs some serious character! Might have to see if I can do something similar.
The was is cool but the semi modular aspect of the neutron put it ina completely different league.
@@zechs5079 yeah I liked this demo video. I've never played around with modular stuff myself. It seems like a deep rabbit hole I'm not quite ready for. I'm more of a musician than a sound designer.
@@ghdrum you can be both, but the neutron is like modular light. Experimentation with the patch pay is VERY rewarding.
@@zechs5079 I think I have access to Native Instruments Reaktor and have been meaning to explore it. Obviously it's a soft synth but might me a good place to start.
@@ghdrum it is, but a better option might be VCV RACK. It has a TOOOON of digital modules from actual module makers and there are a ton of tutorials. Just a thought.
Even though this isn't a style of music that I enjoy, this was a great instructional video for basic synthesis and proof that you don't need a room-full of synths to create (even though I do). Is it not a problem to have the volume of your tracks way up in the red?
There is a way better way to make kicks with the Neutron. Put the resonance of the filter super high until the filter self-resonates, then turn the mod wheel up and put the LFO on a Saw wave. Then play with the filter frequency and LFO speed until you get a nice thumpy kick.
Bro can gou give some recommendations for the LAPTOP/PC?
Which laptop is good? affordable for its price for middle class family ?
Great video! 👍 still waiting for you to ring my doorbell 😁😎
👍👍👍
16:20 Chemical Brothers
how do i send midi information to my neutron from my daw
Song!?...You could do a complete album!!😊
holy shit
When a musician turns a synth into a instrument.
Rene Levice Headlock vibes
@Dr Meaker Tidy very tidy…..🌟🌟🌟🌟
Manso temazo que sacó jajaja
Neutron bible vid 🤘
I enjoyed! Whats the DAW used? FL?
got the Proton here - wait til he gets a load of that beast ;-)
You have one?
that snare sure sounded different when you played everything together? How did it get to that
Bra-vo!
Proper
no hard sync on an analog bassdrum?
This units great for dnb basses -
Carnt imagine how u get the snare
it sounded totally differnt after he created it to when he played it together with the other drums, he must have added a sample to it or something
Hmm, so you're saying dnb snare, hihat, and shaker are meant to sound the same?
3:29 😉
So you made a kickdrum with a highpass filter?
Nice track but the Neutron has a nasal quality in its sound character , paired with eurorack filters and VCA's really makes the oscillators shine and you get a lot of utility modules for modulation, not bad for 300 bucks!
Thats so dirty i bet its an ordinance violation! 😮😅
Meine Fresse, der Track...voll jut. Alle Achtung. Ja mehr.
At least a lot of noise 😅
yes Behringer can work to create good music, no offense to purists.
"purists"? more like "elitist fanboys". Lets call them how we see it.
Who makes drums like that? Of course, if you specifically need to make a dirty sound, then you can do it that way.
ummmmm most good sound engineers, dnb producers create their own sounds
They used it on donda
🧐 word?
@@crnkmnky one of the producers said so on a podcast
Why do all D&B tracks sound the same?
While I don't really agree, I just want to mention that it's an old genre, which it has become very formulaic. A lot of people making it gets stuck in the same rut, with more or less identical rhythmic patterns and layout of the songs.
@@KimStennabbCaesar Yea I was half joking, but it does tend to be different people all making the same beat.
@@Dani-El. Ah, yeah. There's definitely progressive stuff out there. Still boundaries to be pushed.
i'm sorry but i didn't get why this tutorial about producing electronic music on a middle age tool
For fun, for education, for a challenge? If you still have to ask after hearing the results, then you weren’t the intended viewer.
Some people like to work with different tools. Taking a couple steps outside of the box. The never-ending quest for tactile control and analog “warmth.” Limitations can be good for creativity.
@@crnkmnky idk, I think as a creator, I'm trying to work with the best tool I can use
Thoses kind of exercices seem to me so pointless like trying to run 100 meters with only one foot (it can be fun drunk but it's not serious)
Making a good kick, a good snare are hard tasks, it should be serious
I obviously understand the passion for analogue tool, I love the sound of a moog and so on, but it need to be used in an artistic purpose
Here it sounds like a really lofi DnB trying to emulate "real" DnB
@@agatheboulanger5807 You can find plenty of people performing this “pointless” exercise all over UA-cam, as well as plenty of people who only use the “best” tools. Of course, “best” is vastly subjective in the audio realm.
“Real” is also subjective. This is a real track which already has fans. It has a release number on a real record label. 🤷🏿♀️
imagine thinking that a tool=musical skill. lol
@@moistpeanut5986 imagine you didn't loool
Do you figure out that tools are the only interface or sensitive relation you have with music (since it's a physical phenomenon) ?
