This has to be done. Energy needs to be produced within the concept of production in-depth: Nuclear, Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Hydro, etc.
The problem isn't energy or the people losing jobs, the problem is the people don't know how to embrace the upcoming new technology that is more than anything a tool for people. It is not your enemy. Breathing clean air and keeping workers safe is better than money but when your lifestyle of owning a home and eating like a middle class worker is at stake it is easier said than done. So how can workers transition while feeling like it was worth it? trust me, i'd rather be a middle-class wealthy person in the year 3010 than a billionaire in the year 1980.

Nuclear waste can also be recycled to the point at which it may only be radioactive for around 200 years, which is entirely manageable from a storage and safety point of view.

I don’t like to agree with Gates but the US needs a lot more nuclear power plants. Maybe not this exact design but nuclear in general. The ones we have a extremely safe and reliable.

@@davew2040x He wants to build a completely new reactor design in a place (Kemmerer Wy) where only 2,500 people want to live and construction is limited to 7 months because of the weather. Good luck getting constructors to move there when there is no infrastructure to support the 2,000+ workers required.
The locals hate Gates and I am sure they will not be happy with the drugs, crime, and everything else that comes with 2,000+ construction workers.
The reality of what is known about new nuclear construction in the U.S. today is listed below.
If you live in the U.S. here is the reality for the last 4 “state of the art” Generation III Westinghouse AP1000 ADVANCED new nuclear power projects and spent fuel reprocessing in the U.S. over the last 20 years. The AP1000 is fully approved by the NRC for construction and operation. The only NRC requirement is that the plant be built per design documents…..seems simple..
The Southeastern U.S. is super pro-nuclear MAGA, has zero anti-nukes, and 100% media, local, and political support.
The MOX facility (South Carolina) was a U.S. government nuclear reprocessing facility that was supposed to mix pure weapon grade Pu239 with U238 to make reactor fuel assemblies. It was canceled (2017) in the U.S. After spending $10 billion for a plant that was originally estimated to cost $1 billion and an independent report that estimated it would cost $100 billion to complete the plant and process all the Pu239, Trump canceled the project in 2017.
VC Summer (South Carolina) new nuclear units 2&3 were canceled in 2017 after spending $17 billion on the project (original estimate of $14 billion and 2016 completion date) with no clear end in sight for costs or schedule. Four managers on the project were charged with 16 felony counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, and causing a publicly traded company to keep a false record. The CEO of the project is serving 2 years in prison, another manager just got 15 months in prison, and the others are awaiting trial.
Vogtle (Georgia) new nuclear units 3 &4 at 110% over budget and schedule (currently over $34 billion with an original estimated cost of $16 billion). Mid way into the build, the utility stated that had they known about the many costly delays they would never have chosen nuclear. They last year long delay, according to the project management, was because thousands of build documents were missing. The first unit started in 2023 with Vogtle being, for its output, the world’s most expensive nuclear power plant. BTW, that first unit is now shutdown for repairs and the second unit is still a year away from startup.

As someone who has been involved in nuclear power for over twenty years, I am pleased that nuclear power is finally getting the investment needed to move forward. Liquid sodium reactors are the future. The problem has always been antiquated licensing regulations and a general fear of nuclear power in the general public fueled by some media. To be clear there are negatives to nuclear power as it is being utilized today. Pressurized water reactors require large, extremely expensive containment buildings. They also use U-235 as fuel which is problematic for several reasons but primarily because of the long half-life of the waste material which is mostly U-238 a fissionable fast fuel and Pu-239 used in making bombs. It is this last reason the U.S. has resisted the development and deployment of liquid sodium reactors. Even though they are much more efficient and less expensive because they operate at nominal pressure and do not require expensive containment structures they also do not produce the plutonium that nuclear powers need for their weapons programs. There are a few other companies developing this technology including one that is developing small to medium sized modular power plants that can be built almost anywhere. The fossil fuel industry is lobbying hard against the adoption and deployment of this technology. It will be interesting to see what advances are made in the next decade. It is a vital tool in combating climate change. We just have to have the courage to fight coal and big oil to use it.
For some one who says they worked with and are knowledgeable about nuclear, you want to start building new technology reactors and make claims on something that has not been proven commercially in this country.
@@clarkkent9080 You don't seem to read very well. I explained WHY they haven't been ALLOWED to be licensed commercially in this country. They don't produce weapons grade plutonium but THAT is what the government wanted for its nuclear weapons program. A technology doesn't have to be "proven in this country" to be a viable option to solve any problem. Electricity wasn't commercially viable in this country until it became available to the masses. This type of reactor is safer and can be built for far less money than the pressurized water behemoths that exist today. In fact, pressurized water reactor plants are so expensive to build, the only way they are commercially viable is through government subsidies and costs passed on to consumers in the form of higher electric bills. Liquid sodium reactors can be built at a fraction of the cost and actually lower costs per kilowatt hour even compared to fossil fuel plants. BTW, the first liquid sodium reactors were built in the United States over fifty years ago. The Navy built one and installed it on a submarine to test its viability on that platform but decided because of technical requirements not to go ahead with the project. Do you think the U.S. Navy would have done that if they didn't have proof the technology would work? I toured that prototype and studied the principles behind its design and operation. Yes, I do know a lot about nuclear power.

BTW, the ONLY sodium reactor even remotely planned in the U.S. is the Terrapower Natrium reactor and it uses U235 and it does produce plutonium.

Hanford Wa. has been making weapons material, at their 9 reactors, since 1944, 12 years before the first U.S. commercial nuclear plant became operational and their weapons production reactors are very efficient graphite moderated reactors and DO NOT produce any electrical power.
Savannah River site SC. Has been making weapons material since 1955 and their 5 production reactors are very efficient low pressure heavy water moderated reactors and DO NOT produce electric power.
Thorium was tried at Shippingport and Indian Point commercial reactors in the 1970s and abandoned as too costly compared to Uranium.
Weapons production reactors are NOTHING like U.S. commercial PWR or BWR power reactors and commercial power reactors have NEVER been used to produce Pu239 for weapons, since there has never been a need beyond what the efficient weapons production reactors could provide..
The U.S. currently literally has hundreds of TONS of Pu239 (takes less than 20 pounds per weapon). The U.S. has so much that 34 tons of weapon grade Pu239 is being treated so it can eventually be disposed of at a cost of billions.

Navy reactors do not have any of the redundant systems or safety systems of commercial plants so there is no comparison. AND the sodium reactor used in the Seawolf was replaced with a PWR....so much for it being better.

Sodium reactors have been around since the beginning. They were used in submarines in the 50s alongside the water reactors. Water reactors were selected for mass use because of weight savings, and the civilian industry just went along with using that design.
Thanks to Nixon. He decided that pressurized water reactors were good for defense, and this was the primary reactor made commercially. Liquid salt and other designs went away.
It was also due to the lack of bomb grade material produced in a pressurized water reactor vs a sodium reactor. Proliferation was an issue. The meltdown in Simi Valley also looked really bad for the sodium reactor, and the operators coming from the Navy all knew about the pressurized water reactors so that helped. USS Seawolf was sodium cooled, but she was prone to leaks in the cooling system and it was replaced with a pressurized water reactor. The Soviet alpha submarines ran on a lead bismuth reactor. Those are the only submarines that had non-pressurized water reactors installed that I know of, only USS Seawolf had a sodium reactor and it was an abject failure.
You can actually think Hyman Rickover for the pressurized water reactor as the primary naval reactor design.

Back before Korea got the bomb, they cracked open an old reactor and started scraping their fuel rods for plutonium. I'm curious why you say that? Pure sodium explodes in water, and so having that in a sub might be a bad idea. Also, I am pretty sure Nixon when focusing on pressurized water reactors was also considering the making of weapons grade materials for bombs.
@@putinscat1208Not Nixon . Rickover pushed for water reactors because the use in the navy was a safer design and the Rickover wrote the book on the operation of the reactor . They call admiral Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy. He is also credited with creating military standards for purchasing equipment for the navy that would survive in war time conditions. It was a big fight by the contractors to stop him , they lost. 🇺🇸

Comes online in 2030? Sure takes a long time to build a power plant like this. But I think this is the way to go for the future.
First of a new design always takes a long time. The regulatory/inspection/safety process is a bear.
It was supposed to be built in China in order to lower the cost then using those models do it in USA faster and more reliable BUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION BLOCKED IT. IF TRUMP HADN'T DONE IT THEN WE WOULD HAVE IT BY 2025. I have been following this prior to COVID as I am investing $.

Irf they can get it to work with a thorium-232 based reactor, it could mean way less radioactive waste and what waste is generated has a half-life of around 350 years, meaning really cheap disposal (if the nuclear medicine industry doesn't grab it first!).

The reason he is well known is because he is a billionaire. If you are a billionaire and you invest in new things you will get press coverage, and people in need of research money will come to you. Not all billionaires invest this way, which is why most don't get this type of press. But it is effectively bought, and not given on the basis of accomplishment.

in the oil industry they drill 40,000 ft into the ground. why can't they put the waste 40,000 feet into the ground and cap it. Anything you put down there will not be seen again.

BTW, Oil and gas wells can range in depth from a few hundred feet to more than 20,000 feet. In some parts of the world, wells go as deep as 30,000 feet. Costing from 4 to 20 million each
FYI, A fuel assembly is 12 feet long and ~9 inch by 9 inch. They are externally contaminated so the must be placed in a shielded container and that could increase the dimension to more than 2 feet if you use a cheaper shielding material than lead. Oil wells are not 2 feet in diameter.
In addition to commercial spent fuel, there is military high level waste and 90 MILLION gallons of highly radioactive waste from the production of nuclear weapons and that is just in the U.S. All will have to eventually disposed of but there are no simple solutions
what about the aquifer, seismic movement ?If oil and gas got there from plants that once were on the surface can you assure it will never move?
@@clarkkent9080 I don't believe there is a aquifer 40,000 ft in the ground or one that would affect people on the surface. Anything put 40,000 into the ground will not be seen again ever. But I think it just has to be there for hundreds of years until its safe.
@@bluedot6933 The radioactivity decays slowly. Pu239 has a 24,100 year half life so after 169,000 years you still have 1 % remaining and that is 676 times al long as America has existed.
You don't understand what that means? How do you even warn people 169,000 years in the future to not dig here or drill for oil? what language or symbol do you use?
In todays world, shortly after burring the waste the conspiracy theories would start in social media on what was REALLY burred and the nut jobs would try to dig it up. It would require constant security but what happens when America no longer exists....no country has lasted for ever.
Burring waste is just the cheap way of letting future generations deal with it.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten into heated debates with the people that call themselves “environmentalists” who are anti nuclear power. I’m like bro are you serious?
I worked in the industry for 40+ years and am pronuclear but that does not mean I have to support the massive cost of new nuclear. I live in the grid area of Vogtle, just built the newest nuclear plants in the U.S.. My electric rates increased 25% because of them and will increase more when the second unit comes on line. Vogtle is the world's most expensive (per Mw capacity) power plant. The fear of living next to one has nothing to do with fear of an accident. I fear it will continue to run and be unable to afford my electric bill

OK from the Terra power website , they have not yet submitted the construction application to the NRC. The design has not been certified by the NRC either. CBS reporting is pitiful.
Terrapower has $2 billion of taxpayer matching funds welfare and they originally estimated the cost of their 345 Mw reactor to be $1 billion but now it is estimated to cost $4 billion and that is a financial failure before they move the first shovel of dirt

The NuScale SMR project (the ONLY SMR project in the U.S.) was to come online starting in 2029 and was supposed to replace electricity from coal plants that are closing.
Instead, NuScale and the Utah utilities announced Wednesday (11/ 8/23) they're terminating the project after a decade of working on it. The cancellation comes amid supply chain problems, high interest rates and a failure to obtain the desired tax credits.

See a pattern there: it’s safe and clean and cheap, until someone does something stupid, or an unforeseen circumstance happens the engineers did not anticipate, then it’s gigantic disaster. Gates skipped over the part where the design uses 20% enriched U-235 fuel vs 2% in current designs, which cuts down the needed refueling, but makes bomb grade material that much easier to obtain. The recycling technology is not currently in the US, and it’s not as easy, requiring higher enriching standards, and added danger from criticality accidents, very common at poorly run enrichment plants. This is not the panacea it appears, it’s old technology, riskier in some cases there our current designs.
When lately have we heard about “entrepreneurs” trying to speed up processes, cut costs, and make things simpler in the news, and how did that go????
One other point, who’s going to insure it? A major hurdle no one is going to solve is who is on the hook if something goes wrong. Most of the companies in the US specifically exclude radiological accents from their policies (seriously read your homeowners policy). An insurance company runs from this type of risk, not because of the potential of the accident, but because of the catastrophic impact of just one accident. If no one insures it, it will never get built….
Zero people died after the accident at Three Mile Island. Fukushima experienced a magnitude 9 earthquake and 40-ft tsunami and there were zero deaths due to nuclear/radiation exposure. Chernobyl … was a disaster (no sugar coating it).
However, I’d point out that all 3 of those plants were built in or well before the 70’s. How many technologies do you know of that haven’t improved since the 70’s? The fact is, aside from one terrible accident, the safety record of nuclear power is exceptional, and the safety of the technology has only improved over time.
@@matthammond4485 I totally agree, direct deaths were deminimis, indirect deaths however were and are not. Increased cancer rates are well documented at Chernobyl, Fukushima is still under study, possibly not an issue, but not totally clear based on the current research. Around 10 miles from Three Mile Island the cancer rates increased statistically higher for lung and leukemia respectively. So it’s not just the immediate effects.
You also negated to mention the economic and social impacts. In all cases the implications to local residents and taxpayers/rate payers of the countries suffered and were on the hook for the clean-up. When you can’t live in large portions of an area, I’d call that a disaster. Chernobyl and Fukushima have exclusion zones that will be present for centuries, TMI supposedly did not require the evacuation zones, but try to sell a house close to that plant, your not getting anything close to fair market value.
These new plants are nothing new, sodium reactors have been around just as long as boiling water reactors. The design was tested in the late 50’s, the Sodium Reactor Experiment in Simi Valley melted down in 1959 and 1/3-1/4 of the fuel rods were damaged with radioactive gas vented to the atmosphere. It was covered up and downplayed mainly because we did not understand the health effects.
You also failed to consider the refinement and enrichment for the fuel. Most direct deaths aren’t from reactor accidents, they are from accidents in the supply chain that refines and produces the fuel, those accidents are numerous.
Lastly, reprocessing and mining is not considered in your argument. We are talking about large amounts of weapons grade material in the sodium reactors which pose a proliferation threat (one of the reasons pressurized water reactors are what we use today). To reprocess fuel it requires refinement and this makes more weapons grade products and waste materials. Mining has always been an issue, one that is often overlooked. Uranium mines are dirty, just as dirty as coal mines or other fossil fuels, and require large equipment that runs off fossil fuels, so your really not saving anything there either.
It’s not a panacea, and it’s not as cut and dry as Mr. Gates and the environmental groups would have you believe and while it’s relatively “safe” I am sure you would not want one to be built in your back yard, or a processing facility, or a waste disposal facility, so it’s not a viable solution either….

Battery storage which is quickly ramping up and coming online will make the risks and sustained costs of nuclear unnecessary...renewables (solar/wind/battery combo) are basically free energy after you build them. California alone already has enough battery storage to replace a large nuclear power plant in electrical load at times when the grid is stressed.
