  • 'THE ICE RING' - FROZEN In RESIN ART! An Experiment by Daniel Cooper
Here is a Resin Art video of me experimenting with Vallejo Ice Effect paint inside a ring! I know this was a long winded video, but as mentioned, I have never tried this until now, I now know the best methods to use to get the best results, but still some ideas that need testing! This turned out to be an incredible piece of Resin Art. Now to master the perfect snow flakes inside like how they grew on the outside of the ring! Also, this can be done with Epoxy!
All product links are further down 😊 ⬇️.
Please do NOT experiment with products which may be dangerous if mixed with resin!
You can now be a member of my channel which will give you access to comment badges and also wallpaper of my resin art macro photography. You may need to save these to your device via a PC or screenshot and adjust the images.

Hi Daniel! I love the fx paint and use it quite a lot, for that style ring, creating an inlay using soft uv resin, which remains flexible, then hitting it with the paint gives a much cleaner finish, also, I have zero patience, I'm not sitting about watching it develop lol I use an embossing heat gun, just wafted over it. I create the inlay on a silcon mat, cut two pieces to lay adjacent to eachother at the width you need, and close of the ends with more matting. Then just pour and cure, you can add the paint whilst it's still sitting in the the void you created with the mats, I hope that makes sense! x

These are really gorgeous! 😍 Another awesome experiment! 😁👍 You're the mad scientist of the resin world and we love it. 😂
I'm curious though. 👀 What if you cut strips of plastic or get shrink wrap that would fit the ring, cut it to fit the inside chanel of the ring and did the frost effect on that before putting it on the ring? You'd have to be really careful applying it to the ring because they seem delicate but that might work, especially if you could find black plastic/shrink wrap. Hmm... or maybe colorful, irridecent cellophane? That might give a lovely sparkle and flash of colors behind the frost. 🤔

Many, many years ago, I have used cotton before but it can be too visible, someone mentioned scratching the resin then applying the paint, I may try that soon 😊😊

Daniel, what about painting a thin line of frost on a separate piece of film or paper? Paint a line of resin to desired width on film and cure. The place the frost paint on top of that. Embed this strip into the ring gap and cover with clear resin.
I did some web searching and the Vallejo site says its a "saline" solution that forms crystals. I suspect they use epsom salts. You could try making your own paint trying different binders such as mod podge or thinned pva glue. It's a very thick mixture, lots of salts to liquid. They also said the frost can be hardened with cyanoacrylate glue using the capillary effect.

Wow, this is such an interesting effect. I do macro photography of real snowflakes and have tried (and failed!) to fossilize them on a microscope slide using cold superglue. This frost product is something I've never seen before - sorry if I've missed you using it in other videos. I definitely want to play with it 😁 Thank you as always for the brilliant video

I enjoy watching you 'just having a go' because it will maybe give me confidence to try things myself. So I'd say do as many videos like this as you feel like!! I have never seen that frosty stuff before, have I missed a video with you using it on something else? I'll go back and have a look, if not, then what is it what's it normally used for? Hugs x Ann x

I can't believe what pretty frost effects it creates. That must have been painful to remove them. Thankfully some did go inside, though they did lose the snowflake form. I'm looking to see if I can buy this in Mexico. Amazon Mexico does have the Vallejo line of products but so far in the special effects I haven't found the frost or even the snow. Thanks again

Oh they look so neat! I wonder if you could help contain the crystals inside by scoring the resin you put as a base. I have a theory the crystals form on the outside because of the sharp line there: the resin is too smooth for nucleation, perhaps. I really need to get some of the ice crystal stuff to test myself, I think potentially, if what I think is happening is indeed happening, one might be able to score swirls and other patterns and have crystals grow from those.

I did think after filming about sanding the surface next time I try it, I think it would work, also could be used in moulds that have the detail grooves that are normally filled with color after the demold. I definitely think it would work in scratches too 😊

I think they turned out stunning. Definitely like the second one a little better though.
I’m wondering what that effect would look like with a light smattering of mother-of-pearl mixed in.
😂 You make me wish I had the space to try some of these experiments for myself.
