Linda, have you ever thought of passing your tulips on to people who live in Northern areas where tulips are a perennial? It breaks my heart they go into compost. Lol. Am I the only one that wants to save every plant?! It always crushes my heart when I go into a place like Walmart and they just let their plants die because they don't water them. I am sure you would have alot of takers of your beautiful, fabulous tulips! Your yard is stunning!
Karie....you are a true horticulturist. You, like myself, love plants. Everything about them is fun and interesting. Of course, all horticulturist love all aspects of gardening, where as, some people can't be bothered with the details; they like the show or therapy of a gardening. i stopped watching this video the moment she said and showed her pulling out the plant for composting. To me, she might as well just hire a landscaper to do the work. Anybody can have a splendid tulip display be buying new bulbs. Now, if she had these for several years.....that would be impressive !
Pass the word onto Linda Vater that she can ship the 700 tulips to our newly formed garden club in Minnesota and we will plant them around town. :) In the meanwhile, I am sharing this and the window box post to our Facebook page. Gotta love a garden for the four seasons!
This year I put out close to 75 bulbs of tulips and daffodils. I am hoping to see a lot of blooms. I have a statue in my garden and bulbs have been planted all around the statue to add beauty for garden. This will be the second spring at this location. I will have to do much work in the summer to inrich my garden space.
Who else's jaw literally dropped open in shock when she said she pulled them up every year?!😲 I planted over 300 this last Fall & I know the cost & the hard work that went into that & def would not want to do that year after year!😖😓 After reading some of the comments I found out that she lives in a southern zone where they apparently will not survive until the following Spring!☹ I wish they would have stated that in the video as some beginer gardeners may not know better!😟 I live in zone 8b & mine not only come back every year, they have a lot longer blooming time then her 1 month!🙂 (It did say Oklahoma City under Linda's name, but they should have explained more clearly this fact). I also thought it was strange that her ground phlox were already in bloom as mine do not usually start blooming until around June (no sooner then May 15th) - they are def a Summer bloomer for me. But her living in a warmer climate accounted for this too. Just an FYI for those who were interested in this plant that you may not have it bloom w/ your tulips like she did.🌸
True gardener would dig them up after they go brown - store them - then give them a proper chill in the fridge/freezer. There are tricks around this - but she just wants a pretty garden (no brown).
@@Sofi_CraftsandMore35 guess when your that rich things like that are just expendable to you!🤷♀️ Not me! Way too much money & definitely way too much work!
My house is rectangular with rectangular features. I don't know what bed shapes to do to match my home, but I love a rounded edge garden to soften up everything else
Completely your preference. formal lines would echo you house shape, but rounded bed shapes would contrast and make a nice compliment. Thanks for watching!
Exactly my question, it was a little horrifying to hear. Then I thought maybe she's in a warmer zone and just has no way to keep that many tulips chilled.
True tulip gardeners in warm climate (i.e.) California will dig up the bulbs once it turns brown and save them for the next year (give them a proper chill before planting). 700 bulbs tossed is a waste IMO.
I love the garden but I was somewhat disappointed that she discards the tulip bulbs every year. she can still pull them up if they are unsightly and put them in a trench out back in the sun until the foliage dies back (only takes few weeks) then replant them for next year
Unfortunately for her, tulips are not reliable perennials in warmer climates like Oklahoma. Tulips require a cold winter to perform as a perennial (I think it's somewhere around 16 weeks of cold but all bulbs are different). The other issue she'd have with them if she was in a cooler region is that watering your flowerbeds in the summer will cause your dormant tulip bulbs to rot. She'd never be able to plant anything around them that requires regular watering during the late Spring, Summer, and Fall months. For these reasons, a lot of gardeners will treat bulbs like hyacinths and tulips as early-blooming annuals to fill in the gap before everything else catches up.
I’m so disappointed in everyone’s attitude towards Linda and her composting her tulips. In our climate they would have to be stored then refrigerated, which many of us don’t have the space for or the time to do all of this. We have to treat them as annuals and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s her garden, her money and her time unless you pay her bills don’t tell her what to do. Plus even if she had the time to send them to someone then everyone who didn’t get the tulips would be mad. If you want tulips and they are perennial in your area buy your own.
Why does everyone pull them up? I planted like 50 tulips 4 years ago in clumps of ten (I ordered 10 of each) and I have easily 500 now with only 1 variety struggling
Which varieties did you plant? Here in Kansas City they often don't come up. I planted Angelique one year and about half flowered. The others didn't and then they never showed up the following year. I even planted in bulb cages to prevent animals from getting to them. It was disappointing. I'd love to know which work for naturalizing like yours have done.
A lot of modern tulips are species tulips.. they are generally not good at naturalising and don’t produce a good show after the first year.. this lady clearly wants a spectacular display every year so fresh bulbs are the way the go really. If you’ve got money why not? She’s clearly got plenty lol
To save so much time and effort, if the bulbs are going to be replaced every year, why not leave in pots instead of all that digging. Love the purple ground cover
Yes creeping phlox, also called ground phlox in some catalogs. It comes in pink, bright pink, purple/lavender, white, and one they call silver (which is actually like a pale blue). I have also seen a white & pink variegated variety but I have never grown that one.
If she compost her tulips.....can I have them 😄 I get why some people do that but honestly I never rip mine out....I just mulch them really well then clear the mulch during spring. The mulch goes to other areas in the garden and then turn to soil which I reuse. Happy cycle happy life.
In her climate, the heat is really hard on the bulbs through the summer months. They would need to be stored, refrigerated and replanted in fall to survive.
Hello Linda, I love your video so much! Can I have the name of the little blooming purple flower's name at the border? Also the names of the tulips if don't mind.
Garden Gate Magazine Having this information even as a typed note on the bottom of the screen would be helpful for novice gardeners. If you don’t know about chill requirements for tulips and you’re watching this with no additional information, it’s very confusing. Thanks!!
In my neighborhood that would be a daily feast for the deer herds, rabbits and groundhogs for as long as any of it would remain. After everything above ground was eaten, the bulbs would then be dug up and eaten by squirrels. So, your idea of feeding the neighborhood wildlife was commendable but apparently you planted it in the wrong location.
Well seen 99% of us aren't going to ripe up bulbs that took a long time to get to the point they are large enough to plant by those that cultivate tulip and then she rips them up and compose them. She wouldn't think of giving them to someone that can't afore. No she doesn't think about others.
Flower Garden beautiful.. 👍🌹🌷🥰💐🌺😘😊
You have such a gift of gardening
She really does. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I'm in Philly and I do the same exact thing. Not as many though, only 500.
Ill take the Tulips if you need to get them off your hands lol my heat sank when I saw her remove the bulb and say she composted it 🤣
Linda’s garden is so beautiful!! She does an amazing job creating this beautiful heavenly garden. It’s inspirational.

I wonder why she throws them away? I leave mine in the year all year long. Maybe they can't in Oklahoma and she doesn't want to bother with storing.
Неописуемой красоты сад!

Wow thanks for the info. I can’t imagine redoing it every year. I live in 7B and they come back every year.

And now she sold her house..and I love her new cottage house too..
Can't wait to see the progress on the new house. Thanks for watching.

Tulips do not return here in coastal N.C. They must be treated like annuals.
Sadly they are annuals in California too.

Wow
For sure!
Why does everyone pull them up? I planted like 50 tulips 4 years ago in clumps of ten (I ordered 10 of each) and I have easily 500 now with only 1 variety struggling
Isa it depends on zone
In the south those bulbs are annuals- they won't come back again because a cold winter is necessary for them to come back and bloom the next year.

Hello, I am Korean. Is the flower in front of the tulip a flower grass (Emerald Cushion Blue)?
Здравствуйте,покажите пожалуйста этот участок летом.

What’s that purple flower called at the front please? Gorgeous!
I believe She said moss phlox

Ramibu 2 I have north hills creeping phlox, which is a white with what looks like another little purple flower in the center, it’s amazing!

Yes it is!
Can you tell me what the name of purple flowers . Thanks
Creeping phlox. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful garden. For those that have deer problems plant daffodils around tulips that will defer the deer. Daffodil bulbs are poisonous to animals.
Hello Linda, I love your video so much! Can I have the name of the little blooming purple flower's name at the border? Also the names of the tulips if don't mind.
Moss phlox is at the front of border and the tulips are a mix from Colorblends. Thanks for watching.
Dig up the bulbs and put them in the fridge
I wish you were my neighbor. Do you inspire others in the neighborhood to garden?
She has a beautiful neighborhood. We also photographed her neighbors garden.
Garden Gate Magazine Could you kindly post a link. I will look for it but that link would be very helpful! Thanks!!
