- ❤️GET THE COOKBOOK: divascancook.com/cookbook/ Hot Water Cornbread made the old-school way with corn meal, salt, butter, and hot water; fried to golden perfection. (recipe link below)
Tips for making the BEST hot water cornbread
1. Add the boiling water a little bit at a time. You only want to add the water until you are able to form a soft dough. This amount usually changes for me by a tablespoon or two. If you add too much water you won't be able to form the soft dough.
2. Let the batter sit for 10 minutes. This gives the hot water a chance to really soften up the cornmeal which will result in the perfect "fluffy kinda creamy" inside texture that is classic to a perfectly cooked hot water cornbread.
3. Use a rubber spatula. I've found that placing the formed patty on a rubber spatula and then slowly sliding it into the hot oil works great. That way I don't have to handle the soft dough and it retains its round shape.

@@Itsbludior do you know a good recipe for those types of beans? I didn't know whether to search bean soup or what. I'm from northen la and miss the food
This seems like it would go great with chili or baked beans! I love seeing old-fashioned recipes like these. Thanks, Monique!
Making it w pinto beans and rice
My grandma used to eat hot water cornbread and milk it made me smile when you said that. It was sooo good I miss her. Thank you for this ♥️
I was so happy to see this type of cornbread recipe. BECAUSE my Mom and Abuela (grandma) made these for us when we were kiddos. They called these “Gorditas” (chubby girls)! They sometimes they added jalapeño 🌶️ bits, bacon 🥓or dehydrated/dried shrimp 🦐! Yup shrimp!!
My mom did too…but with buttermilk! 🥰
I make my cornmeal mixture , and I add it to my greens , after my greens are done , , let it cook on top of MY GREENS for about 30 minutes , yes it's good that way too . My aunt ,that lived in the COUNTRY COOKED THEM LIKE that ..😃 .
Sounds amazing!!
Yummy
So instead of frying them you let them cook like a dumpling?!
What sorcery is this 😊?
That sounds freaking good 😋
This recipe takes me back to when my mama make them special for us. My mother came from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and they make hot water cornbread. Thanks for sharing your recipes 😊
This makes me so happy. My great grandmother used to make this for me every time I’d visit her because she knew I was obsessed. She passed before I could get the recipe, so this put a smile on my face ☺️
We make this in Puerto Rico😋. My mom makes them the shape you're showing, and like little fingers, don't know how to describe it, but is the same. We love to eat them with cup of coffee in the morning 😊. Thank you for your recipes! Your chocolate cake recipe is my family's favorite.
What’s it called in PR? I didn’t know this as well.
It's called surullos!
Thank you for Always sharing delicious QUICK recipes. There is a 30min video on this same hot water cornbread 🤦🏽♀️ That's why I Appreciate YOU so much!
In my little island of Puerto Rico we called them sorullitos de maiz(cornmeal rolls/fritters) and they are made very similar. We stuff them with cheese and even meats. Delicious ❤
My mother used to make hot water cornbread to go with beans ❤️ it
Interesting, I’ve never heard of hot water corn bread before. I’m definitely going to make these in the morning 😌
wait what...where are you from ?
@@pooh4025 🤣🤣🤣
It's damn good with some meals
I tried this tonight--really so simple but so good. I love recipes that only call for a few ingredients, but using good cooking technique ends up blowing your socks off at how good such a simple thing can be
I'm having one for dessert. With molasses mixed with butter... mmm.....
@brettmiller9066 what is this butter & molasses mixture...? I feel like that's something I need on my tongue & in my belly asap 😏
Just discovered your channel. Real food like real people eat. This is the food I grew up eating. And still eat! Thank you! You do a great job with your instructions and videos! God bless from Oklahoma!

Much appreciated - I like that you kept in your little error. I love me some hot water corn bread, made the old school way. My mom made it, but I never made until now, thanks!
Use to eat this as a kid, something about eating these while living in the country feels so right lol 💚💚💚💚
🙏 Happy that you have fond memories of your Grandma, and keep her recipes going. I will definitely give these a try. TY!😊
I like mine Old school with homemade butter. My grandma made it just for me when I was little. . . Talking about comfort food 😩🥰🥰🥰
This is my first time seeing this old school corn bread ❤️
I love this. My mom just made some a few days ago, but she doesn't use cornmeal. She says that her mother used to add to the greens also. We are going to try this recipe. It looks so good! 😍
did she use flour?
What did she use in place of the cornmeal?
Thank you for this recipe. My grandmother made this for us growing up. I’m going to make some for my daughter with collard greens 😊.
If you add too much water in hot water cornbread. Just add more cornmeal. No need to start over.
The spirit is speaking!!! I'm gonna get some greens today just so I can make this hot water cornbread. Looks sooooooo good!
Thank you! I’ve heard about this for a long time but I didn’t really understand the meaning of hot water cornbread. Seeing it made makes all the sense in the world. I will definitely be trying this Thanksgiving. The idea of using bacon fat makes it sound absolutely fantastic.
Fried in Bacon Fat and topped with kerrygold butter. Good stuff !!
You’re so beautiful inside and out sharing these recipes ❤️always good vibes your way
Oh my gosh. My grandmother and mother made this all my childhood life. I haven’t had it since. Can’t wait to make it!
Yay! My grandmother used to love making hot water cornbread! And now I'm going to make one on Thanksgiving Day! Thank you so very much! ^^
This kind of reminds me for making tortillas. (Or also hoecakes.) They look good though, I feel they would be good with honey drizzled on top. 🌽🍯🥞
Yesss they would!
This recipe is almost exactly like how I make pupusas and how my daughter makes the Arepas which the characters ate in the movie Encanto. The main difference is which type of corn meal you use.
My daughter loves pupusa and today I purchased some cornmeal by Goya for hot water bread wish I had a recipe for pupusa
My grams use to always make some hoecakes (cornbread) that’s how it we call it in the Deep South

I'm 60 years old and haven't yet made hot water cornbread I will now 😊♥️
This like a chest code to cornbread, I’m really making these tomorrow morning.
❤ using butter is new to me, but I just did it. My favorite, hot water, cornbread! Stl, 314.
I would crumble mine up and put them in a glass with milk and eat it with a spoon!!! I miss my grandma she used to make this for us in the morning before we went to school. 😭
The first time to see🤭🤭 thanks for sharing🙏
That looks so good. This is going down in my book as one of my first meals when I get off of Keto.
Do you use coarse, medium or fine cornmeal.
Fine cornmeal
Hey Divas! I make this bread a lot. Mmnnn so good. Eat up :) Love 💕
Never heard of it😮😊
Love Hot Water Cornbread, brings me back to my childhood!!! Great recipe Diva!!!
Yes indeed this is the best way to make ole schoo hot water cornbread. Loved the watch! 👍🏾 edit I’m making pinto beans, smoked Turkey legs & Mac cheese yummy 😋
If you add too much water, don't start over! Just take a break and let the meal absorb the water. In fact, I never cook my hot water cornbread right after adding water. I always let it sit and soak in a bit before frying it.
Would adding a bit more cornmeal solve that issue instead of starting over?
Buttermilk!
Yum
Monique, your corncakes look so beautiful. What do you recommend when making no bake cherry cheesecake?
cream cheese & cool whip/whip cream
I love Hot Water Cornbread, but can never make it just right 😁
Thank you for posting your error! It helps when even more to see it as opposed to you just mentioning it.
GIIIIRRRRLLLLL!!!! 😮 😁
This seems like a variation of what we call fried dumplings (not Asian dumplings). Caribbean dumplings. I'll be trying this for SURE!!
Where did you find that kettle...I need one that does not tarnish inside...
Guuuuurrrrlllllll😍
