How to Expand an Exhaust pipe using a 1" socket, and an Air hammer

- I intended this video to be an explainer video on how to use a pipe expander... But, alas, it broke. So I improvised and came up with a novel solution with the tools I had.
Don't fret, AutoZone still gave me my deposit back when I return it even though I broke the tool.
I did exactly the same thing to my Monza exhaust except that I took it to a muffler shop They expanded the pipe on their hydraulic machine. Perfect fit and no charge. Took all of a minute.

Your first way was something I tried over and over for years and never could get to work. I've heated the hell out of the pipe with a torch in order to expand it, but of course made the tool a 1 time use. That Chinese stuff is made for the trash anyways. The second way would be my choice if I were to do it again.
And do not let thes guys miss lead you into believing it was your impact gun, I had a snap on, and worked in a shop with a huge air compressor.
Air pressure not the issue. Its that crappy Husky impact gun. Sometimes it pays to pay more for certain tools. I'm guessing that Husky barely gets 150ftlbs of torque.
U should have a big compressor bz that expander needs a such amount of air and thats why it doesn't make the job.thanks for the big effort 🙏👍🇩🇰

I've tried those pipe expanders a number of times. Never worked...its a "Magic Snake Oil" tool. Much simpler to use a double flare connector, or an inside-outside adapter and two clamps. I also apply a good quality exhaust cement in the joint before tightening the clamps. All of that beating with hammers stress weakens the metal. Best practice (if possible) is to have a muffler shop weld the joint.
Your air pressure needs to be around 150 psi to make that expander work
It's really a not an expander per-say. The only thing I've found these to be good for is to push the detents that pipe clamps leave on the pipes back out again. There are expander kits that do a pretty good job out there, if you don't mind spending about a hundred dollars or so on them.
After the tool broke and it became yours you should have put it in the pipe and used a bottle torch and heated the pipe pretty hot and kept stretching it, it would've softened the pipe and stretched with the tool... Might have overheated the o-rings but it was shot anyways. The tool only would have fell apart only when taken back out.
Nice technique doing a 1/4" at a time.
