I enjoy working on classic cars, and occasionally am asked to help fix later model vehicles. Each week, I try to post something about the two cars I personally own. A 1979 VW beetle convertible (white on white), and a 1977 MGB resto-mod (chrome bumper conversion).
from time to time I also post on home improvement and other craft projects. I am not a professional mechanic, but when I work through a problem I share the solution. so be sure to subscribe

Replace spark plugs on 2016 Jeep Cherokee 2.4L 4 cyl Multiair engine
the plugs on these are rated for 100K miles. But this vehicle has almost 130K and it was time to replace them. no codes, but rough idle and slow idle speed prompted the job.

Good helpful video thanks
Goodjob
Beautiful engine bay, love the diamond plate cowl replacing the cardboard original. I am facing a header install when my '80 engine comes back from shop, thanks for succinct tutorial
@@stephennickles7389 thanks. The diamond plate was pretty easy to make. Here is a video on how I did it ua-cam.com/video/zK_f5skMUoE/v-deo.htmlsi=F1-tgIY8-Jx2934T
Now that the new header has been in place for some months, has the combustion changed? I once bought a '73 MGB that had a steel header that replaced the stock cast iron manifold. I noticed the 2 outboard cylinders (1 & 4) ran rich, while the 2 inboard cylinders (2 & 3) ran lean. I noticed something unusual about the MGB head: The 2 inboard cylinders share an exhaust port whereas the outboard ones do not. Also, the stock manifold joins the 2 outboard cylinders in the manifold before sending them down a long headpipe. The head pipe eventually joins the 2 pipes much farther down the line. As for the steel header, it just balanced the backpressure differently even though it had no obstructions. I changed it back to a stock manifold and the problem went away.
I have not driven it much since the install. Although initial few runs were very good. Lots of power and acceleration. Good points though. I will follow up later when the weather warms up and give it some hard runs to see if there are any issues
@@AlexPlatacis It seems to me that the designers of the MGB exhaust system had their work cut out for them when half the cylinders have to share an exhaust port and the others don't. I've never seen another engine that did that. Most header designers seek to make high flow-rate pipes of equal length on each port. That doesn't really apply to this engine's head. This may be why I keep reading how the stock manifold arrangement is about as good as it gets for that engine. YMMV. You do good work. I hope these fixes you're making get your overheating problems resolved.
@wilycoyote5360 yeah, frankly, i think the carb heat issues were due to the manifold porting, and selection of the DCOE45. The increased airflow increased the manifold temp. (And reduced fuel mileage). The addition of the header seems to have re-balanced the system. In my case at least. I do feel a bit of a performance improvement. If only by the seat of my pants. Not sure it is measurable.
Very helpful video. You saved me time figuring out the connector among other things. Just to add to the info here, mine was actually having issues like higher-than-normal idle speed and rough idle. Last week it was actually trying to die when stopped at a traffic light. After I replaced the sensor the idle went back to normal and the engine light stayed off. I haven't driven it any distance yet, but I feel pretty good about the results. Thanks BTW, I ran across a post somewhere that said if the PCM doesn't the correct signal from the oil pressure sensor it can go into 'Limp home mode'. I suspect but can't qualify that mine was doing that.
Perfect video, you know how to make diy vids, thanks
Hi Nigel got it , i removed the starter motor and put a piece of wood in the hole and jammed the fly wheel ring gear and it went quite easy but i did put quite a bit of penetrating fluid on the crankshaft bolt, I made 2 small wooden wedges and tapped them behind the crankshaft pulley one at the top and one at the bottom and the pulley came off. i enjoyed watching your videos very clear and helpful, thanks Nigel for your help and advice regards Bob
Hi Nigel i have a 1977 mgb gt could i ask you how to slacken the crankshaft pulley bolt regards bob
@robertcrompton7244 that can be tricky... So if the engine is still in the car, you can put the vehicle in gear and set the parking brake, then wrench on it with a cheater bar. (I think it's a 1 1/8) If the engine is out you will need to secure the flywheel. I recommend a vice grip at the starter hole of the back plate. I have a video that demonstrates that (i think it's my clutch video)
@robertcrompton7244 At about 30 mins into this video you can see how I use a vice grip to secure the flywheel ua-cam.com/video/2PncnZS5rKg/v-deo.htmlsi=_no--VWWwNXBxrv-
Does that "key" come off or is it machined onto the shaft?? I was changing the front seal and saw it behind my cover
@gregtaylor5518 yes, the key on the shaft is a separate piece. It us actually designed to sheer off to protect the shaft is the gears get hung up
One other question - Jbugs recommends replacing the exhaust with one from a 1973 or earlier that has heat risers. Did you keep the original exhaust?
@johnharrington4963 yeah, i did not replace my exhaust. The kit comes with risers. But I chose not to install them. We will see if that turns out to be a bad idea. I will do a follow up video on that topic, if it becomes an issue.
Outstanding set of instructional videos. I’ve been considering this swap since I had my motor rebuilt 6 months ago. It hasn’t run well since. The guy who built the motor isn’t a fan of FI and thinks it may be the reason. I haven’t found anyone that knows how to diagnose FI systems in these cars so that leads me to your videos. They have convinced me to make the switch. I still have the original dual relay so your set up was a bit confusing for me. I’ll cross that bridge later. One more thing - what did you do with the return fuel line? Also, could you do one more video showing how you tuned the carb, timing, etc? Thanks again
@@johnharrington4963 i had to fiddler with the carb for a while to get it right. I will do a video on that (now that I have a better idea of how to adjust it) I was able to just run with the previous timing. Although it would be a good idea to go over that too
What did you do with the return fuel line?
@johnharrington4963 I left it in place with the fuel pressure control acting as a vent cap to keep from any vapor, or leakage from the tank
Just did this myself today. It was a bear, have to admit. It took several tweaks of the engine hoist and load leveler to get it lined up and plenty of shoving, twisting and cursing and tadaa...there it is. The cargo strap idea worked great to allow the bellhousing to be pulled up as high as possible. Once engine was engaged, started the bellhousing bolts/nuts then released engine hoist to settle the engine down onto the forward mounts. I hope this rebuild actually runs. It was a lot of work!
I wonder if you could build and MGB stroker engine
Well, if the objective of a "stroker engine" is to increase the cubic displacement of an engine. I have achieved that to a limited degree. This 18 V engine has had the cylinders bored out .04 and I have a head from a '74 that has larger intake valves. And I have ported the combustion chambers, and manifold ports. These improvements will change the output torque without replacing the crank, pistons, and connecting rods.
@@AlexPlatacis I wonder if you could do an offset grind on the crank and rods the right size. Could probably work it to 2 liters. I have never found a stroker kit for an MG
@@AlexPlatacis Or you could just throw in a Ford 289 with and 8 stack of webers an call it a day.
I have a 1974 mgb that I want to change to the dcoe 45 but new they are almost $1k.
you can find them on EBay for around $200 US, but you will still need a manifold, and I suggest you check my videos on Vapor lock. heat management was difficult until I replaced the Exhaust with a performance header Also, if you scroll down through the comments in this thread, AmericanPatriot2422 suggests Pierce Manifold in Gilroy CA for parts
Why not just use carb dip.
well, actually.... I had dipped it earlier, but I used the wrong stuff, and it melted one of the aluminum covers, (I chose not to record that) so when I got the replacement, I decided to manually clean it out. I suppose you can use dip, but that will not actually remove any particles, you will still need to flush it out, and give it a through inspection for clogs.
i appreciate the fact that you did this video...I wish you would have stated what size motor you were working on.. as you know the cherokee had 2 size motors the 2.4 and the 3.2.. This video is useless for people who had 3.2 v6 motor. The v6 motor has the oil pressure switch under the manifold on top of the motor.
Great idea!! I will change the video title and description Sorry if I waisted your time.
I have a 77 in good shape but like all mg's it needs work. My car has 97k miles and who knows what it's been through. After fixing multiple oil leaks there is still one left. I think it is the rear main seal. If I go to all the trouble to replace the seal I'm thinking it would be a good time to rebuild the engine. Did you rebuild the engine yourself, bottom end, or send it off. Can you tell me where you got your gasket set. What engine numbers do I have to know to get a kit. I have found 1798cc/109.7 ci/ 1.8L and BMC B-series 5 main. Thanks for any help Jon Laird
@SeniorJonsAdventures-us5xn i sent the block out to be bored out to .40 I also had the shop install the gundion pins and rings installed. I did all the rest of the assembly of the engine, including the head. My car is a 1977, but it has a head from a '74 (bigger intake valves) it's an 18v I have a play list on the engine rebuild. It helped alot! Your commentary covered everything well, but I can understand. I wouldn't do it twice either.
How did you mount and secure it to the car??
@brianclark2990 it uses two wire loops at the back that connect to the hood latches. The front is connected to the roof mounts. I still have to do a video on that.

How do I reset codes
@@matildaselick7698 i have an odb II reader that can reset codes. There are a lot of them available not too expensive. If you have fixed the issue, it should reset after 50 miles driving (most cars) Or, you can also go to autozone or some other autoparts store. Most can read codes. Should be able to reset
Key on engine off, 3 full throttle pedal to floor, key off, back on
@curtisbeesmith that sequence is for resetting the change oil light.
Thanks for the review - I'm considering replacing my MyQ solution with something I can use with voice commands/Alexa. BTW: You may know this by now, but "5G" and "5GHz" are not interchangeable. 5G is "5th Generation" and generally refers to the standard used in cellular technology. 5GHz is a frequency commonly used by Wifi networks, along with 2.4GHz - most routers support both 5GHz and 2.4GHz but may not have them both turned on by default.
@@JonathanMurray true... I don't do my videos with a script. I actually knew that. But thanks for pointing it out. I am sure it will help someone.
If I were doing this project I would have started with a plywood base and some form of soft pine for the zyd's and did far more forming with the wood and way less with the bondo... Just saying
the bondo is a necessary part of the project regardless of how I did it. I had actually considered making wooden bucks and hammering out the "zyd" from aluminum. ( I like that you called them Zyds) Ultimately I decided to use materials and processes anyone can do affordably. there will be wood work coming as I need to make the framework that goes underneath
Looks great! Dresses up the engine bay nicely. Let me know if you ever make them available!

Great project like you say there are so many MGBs that it’s difficult to stand out from the crowd and this is just a bit of fun. 👍
it will run better with a 30 Pict-1 carb or a 30/31 Pict as the manifold you put on is universal and will take carbs from the 28 PCI to the 34 Pict-3 any carb you prefer the 30 Pict-1 carb is preferred as there is no bypass air circuit to deal with with the 30 Pict-3 and 34 Pict-3 and 4 carbs.
@DerekObidowski helpful information. The carb in this solution was included as part of the kit from JBugs.
I love ur Volkswagen
Vert clean! Thanks a lot. Did you build heat shield yourself? Have a plan of an upgrade on my '72, with Weber 32/36 and a friend looking for almost sane setup as yours with dcoe45.

Why ?
@searchandsave142 it's winter and i wanted to play with my car. It's not a permanent fixture. Be sure to check back I'm going to do more on it each week. Other than wondering why, do you have any suggestions?
The original fuel system had specific pressure requirements because of the injectors. The return line has a pressure regulator and then goes back to the tank. The carb has pressure requirement, but it is controlled with a float bowl. So there is no return line. I just removed the rubber line, and left the pressure regulator in place to act as a vacuum pressure flow control. So, basically to answer your question... Nothing, I did nothing
Hi I don't know if you'll see this or not but I'm unsure what to do with the return for the gas line
Why would you put those humps there??? They were originally used to aid aerodynamics and coincide with just aeroscreens and not a big windshield. In this context they just look dumb as they have no use whatsoever.
@clivewilliams3661 well, first of all, I thought it would be a fun project. I had never intended to race the car, but most of the cars that have them today are just aesthetic. Also, I had taken the car out to a few car shows recently, and as nice as the car is, I felt it looked a bit "white toast". This project will give it that edge to make it stand out a bit. I am designing it to fit in the trunk when not in use, and easily install with no tools. I am no purist. The car is a 77 w Chrome bumpers, and tail lights from a '69. Thanks for your comments though. I like interacting with others who appreciate MGBs. What year is yours?
Did you use the mulching blades or the regular one?
@DavidOBrien-fi2xo just regular. No changes to default setup
When I looked at this for my 70 mgb, I took the lines back right to the boot. The clips were covered. I found that without adding the length the covers looked too boxy... There are a couple of examples of the fairings on the MG V8 site that look very nice. Have fun with your car!
maybe finish off the cone to mimic how the chrome attachment points are shaped. extending them over the roof attachments so they are longer and a smoother taper. possibly the under side still attaching to them
interesting. I wil say though kind of sounds like you might not have seen to many actual vinyl tonneau covers on mgb's. As long as you aren't describing the ones that close off the entire cabin, but most just go up to the seats and cover the soft top. they don't sag and they are held rigid in place by a bar that goes in those metal slot that you mention the optional hard top attaches, soft tops don't have anything to do with those. the tonneau actually sit so tight against the body that the curve you describe is maintained.
yeah, I get where my comments could have been taken as a criticism of vinyl covers. I guess i was really just justifying the project. I had been shopping for a Tonneau, but just was not overwhelmed with what is on the market. hopefully this will give the car some personal flare, and I am designing it to be easily removed so I can go back to a standard cover at some time. thanks for the feedback
yeah I get that, definitely a cool option and project especially if you can get it to abut seamlessly to the back vs overlap it, I didn't mean to come off as harsh as it seemed after i re-read my comment. I'd send you a pic of mine if I knew how to on this medium.

I've never actually seen an MG engine reinstalled this way. Innovative, but I think I'll stick with the tried and true, engine and trans mated. Going to buy a cherry picker tomorrow. It's nice to know another way however, thanks
@stephennickles7389 well, while you have the engine and gearbox out, i suggest you replace the overdrive switch.(if you have overdrive). It is inexpensive, but to replace it will require the gearbox to be removed, or cut a hole in the trans tunnel
