  • In this week’s vlog we head out into San Juan, Puerto Rico to try authentic Puerto Rican food.
First up we head to a more local restaurant called Bebo’s Cafe. Here we try an array of smaller Puerto Rican dishes including:
    Bacalaitos
    Empanadillas
    Tostones
    Asopao
Later in the evening we head out again to try a couple of more dishes at a restaurant called Orozco’s. Here we tried to authentic and must try dishes:
    Mofongo with chicken
Arroz con Gandules (chicken with pigeon peas)
    ABOUT PUERTO RICO
Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls and the El Yunque tropical rainforest. In San Juan, the capital and largest city, the Isla Verde area is known for its hotel strip, beach bars and casinos. Its Old San Juan neighborhood features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive, centuries-old fortresses.
    ABOUT SAN JUAN

Cobblestoned Old San Juan features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and 16th-century landmarks including El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive fortresses with sweeping ocean views, as well as the Paseo de la Princesa bayside promenade.

the sauce that you tried with the bacalaitos is what we call mayoketchup, the most common ingredients are mayonnaise, ketchup, garlic, vinegar.

@@Ms.takenlee No mustard! Like Alexandra Morales and Luis Aymerich said: Mayo, ketchup, garlic (or adobo, which has powder garlic in it), and if is spicy it most likely has hot tabasco sauce. That's it.
1:57 Also, it is Not meant to be dipped, but some people like something to dip it in, hence the mayo-ketchup, as we call it.

Hello my favorite travelers!! Yessss... you guys are right. You can't go to Puerto Rico and not have mofongo. Mofongo is always made with green plantain. It is cut in pieces and fried...then mashed and you add crushed garlic, pork rinds (optional). Since mofongo can be dry, it always goes perfect with some type of meat with sauce. It makes the mofongo very moist. Now the stuffed cups that you had at the first restaurant were made of green plantains too. They are made the same way as the mofongo, but shaped in cups as appetizers. We can also use it yucca or breadfruit. The pink sauce used for dipping is Mayoketchup and it's a little spicy because we add crushed fresh garlic. You guys are totally right that we don't like spicy food at once, instead we have the condiments on the side or the homemade hot sauce to add as we eat. This gives the opportunity to people who don't like or tolerate spicy food to enjoy their meal. I was so excited watching this video, because I am taking my family for Christmas and New Years to the island. Keep traveling....I travel through your eyes!!! Hugss!!

O y si van al Puertorriqueño comeran de todo incluyendo las barrigonas en loiza ahí si se cocina rico y de aquí gracias por el dato😉👌 asumo lo sabes por que solo un Puertorriqueño defiende sus platos thanks

I had so much fun trying different kinds of Puerto Rican foods while there a few months ago. You guys did a good job 👍 One of my favorite experiences was at Deaverdura in Old San Juan; the wait was really long, but the owner was so sweet and gave me a couple shots of PR rum to apologize. She then brought out my order, which was a large sampler platter full of traditional foods. The only one that didn't go down well was the black sausage, but the rest was oh so good! I wound up buying some of that rum to bring home ♥️

Puerto Rican food is not spicy like Mexican or Indian food
it is a choice....also when it comes to tourist ...you'll find that they usually offer fried options street food all over the place
and it's very unhealthy but good lol ... we do have healthy cuisine usually sea food options lol ... but also Our Island grows amazing produce really fertile soil ...I think you really have to get into the towns and out of the tourism areas for all places ...to taste it's culture...drive drive around 🌺... Go to Fajardo on the east coast and check out the Bio bay, sea food (carrucho), the mini boat to off shore little island of icacos, palominito. Oh, the Bio bay has to be at night because that's when you can see the Mother Nature at its best, it's going to blow your mind only a few around the world like it. If you guys like zip line go to Toro Verde.......wow!! Don't forget El Yunque Rain Forest too.

    Guys!!!
I just saw the vid!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 great food. The mixture that you had with the bacalaitos fritters is pretty simple.
Just mix some ketchup and mayonnaise till’ you get a pink’sh or orange’sh color...and BAM! There you have it.
If you want it with a twist you xan add a couple of drops of hot sauce or my favorite...mashed fresh garlic!
Have fun guys and travel save!

Ricky thank you! We've mixed ketchup and mayo in the past and I can tell you there has to be some secret ingredients in there. It's way too good. Lots more on the way! Keep watching - Trevor

I am a Puerto Rican American, raised in PR but been here a little longer. And I wanna say I really love to see when my fellow white brothers and sisters show interest and get to know and enjoy our culture. It's a beautiful thing to see, I hope you guys enjoyed the island and definitely the food. And my heart melted when he tried to say "bacalaitos" 🤣🤣 next time you guys go I would recommend to visit Pinones which is an area where they have a strip in front of the beach with lots of local little places that sell fried fritters and foods, so many different ones, and sea food, they are so cheap and so delicious you can eat and drink beer all day and spend little. Also I would recommend to find an old school old fashioned restaurant in the mountains where they cook the old fashioned way on what we call a "fogon" foh-gohn, so the food is basically cooked over a fire how they use to cook in the past, totally delicious and better than anything, you definitely need to try it, but find the right spot.

You Guys went to the perfect place to eat. I got all the time there to have lunch. I work in the metro area and this is the place to go. In the 80's down the street to the left there was a pub called Shannon's...I you think you like La Placita you would love this place. It was an Irish pub and I use to get so packed that people were gagging out on the street.

As a big time foodie I was waiting for this video and you did not disappoint. The high definition quality of the new video camera is evident. A major upgrade! Montreal and San Juan are at the top of my list of non-European destinations, and your "foodie" videos from both are major inspirations.
Keep up the great videos. Looking forward to Old San Juan.

Your sauce there is most likely "Mayo-Ketchup," which is just like the name suggests, mayonnaise and ketchup blended together, perhaps with some garlic in there as well.

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  5 років тому

There's definitely some other spices in there! The thought of ketchup and mayo together is overly appealing to me. ha - Trevor

I don’t know the name of the place but somewhere around the west or southwest there’s a place that serves empanadillas but the dough is corn flour instead of regular flour so it’s much crunchier and thicker.

I truly like this video. Not only do you engage in my culture with showing the sorroundings cost and location name but also attempt to speak the language even if it's food names and titles. I like the way you attempt in recognizing flavors and ingedients. Keep up the great work. Oh btw IMHO hot sauces or sauce in general don't go into our foods becuase of all the natural spices and flavors. It would take away whats great about that dish, that's why it's always on the side. Keepp up the vids.

Actually, the tostones can be seen at 4:07, right beyond Anna's hand on another plate. Tostones are, indeed, fried green plantain slices that have been flattened after frying. What you were trying was more than likely a chicken fricasee.
