My eyes water and my heart is very heavy when I see these images, to see so much hurting going on. Those who left will come back too. I don't have much but I will go to the island and stay at the local Inns and local restaurants to help out a little along with volunteering too. My people need help please don't stop reporting and all you looks in the mainland please vacation in the island and help out where you can. Also don't forget Vieques and Culebras too. Thanks AJ.
My name is Kayell Herminio Vargas I am a German born Puerto Rican who resides in the U.S. Restructuring the debts should be feasible if Puerto Rico can cut their imports from the U.S. 85% of all food Puerto Ricans consume are imported from the United States. The high tax on imports causes by the merchant marine act is driving up the cost of living in the Island and indirectly forcing Puerto Ricans to leave the Island shrinking our labor force and tax base so there are less people to tax on the island to pay off the debt. This intern forced the government of PR to raise the sales tax on Puerto Ricans not to mention the one leaving the island are the young millennials and teacher as well as doctors leaving the aging population left on the island. The government is cutting funding on there education budget closing down schools and firing teachers around the island which is causing the education level of PR citizens to suffer coupled with Hurricane Maria it's been disastrous. However it's not like PR does not have options if PR cut food imports and started focusing on revitalizing there agricultural industry then PR can be a little more self sustainable, the overall cost of imports will decrease and the cost of living should drop little by little, less people will feel the need to leave the island meaning there is more people to tax to pay off the debt. Currently we are only using 25% of our agriculture potential if we use the other 75% we can cut food imports. Our unemployment rate is about 12% and we have been in a depression for the last decade. Our tourist industry only accounts for 10% of PR total GDP and relying on the tourist industry alone won't cut it especially since tourism has been on decline.
It's good there's at least volunteers, to me though I would be incredibly pissed if the government didn't do more for me than stuff their own pockets, and leaving the people to rely on the kindness and resources of local people.
I am a little late catching this video, but allow me explain the problem in a nut shell for those who still don't get it! Leadership is talking about bringing jobs and investment to PR and to an extent that is fine, but what happens when the next disaster hits! There are a handful of men who could bankroll a full recovery out of their pockets, the less than 1 percent who truly benefit from crony capitalism, which at its core is antagonistic to nature and natural processes. A true leader understands problems and therefore solutions at their root! Humans need clean air, food, clean water, electricity and power would be good, general safety, and shelter! None of the essentials mentioned can be sustained through disaster (real or manufactured) by having JOBS! Communities the world over need to be built sustainably to provide the essentials listed, but if this were the case the government and wealthy could not exploit you!
A majority of Puerto Ricans, Love, respect and look up to the values of the U.S.A. Since WWI Puerto Ricans have fought, bled and die with the U.S.A . Puerto Ricans are U.S.A citizens, as more Mainland U.S.A citizens realize this fact, I know the Pride of the U.S.A will kick in and help these Puerto Rican American Citizens. The Jones Act must not apply to Puerto Rico. Please Help Puerto Rico.
