    Nice video, very informative, nice astrophotography. It would be amazing is someone(from earth and as an amateur) made a very detailed collage of the whole milkyway from the north and south. So cool but would take so long and so many years. Ultra wide field sounds amazing especially when doing untracked, although I don't expect much detail. I'm also curious how cropping your images would look like.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, I agree! There have been some various epic mosaics of the whole milky way. Mostly not very "deep" as in each panel may only be a single exposure, but some people have also combined wide-field mosaics with more detailed shots. For example: Alistair Symon made a nice presentation on this on the astro imaging channel a few weeks ago: ua-cam.com/video/-29gKwGoU34/v-deo.html

    Thank you so much for sharing educating videos people like me beginners to understand the concepts and techniques.
    I’m planning to purchase my very first DSLR which is Nikon D750 along with 85mm 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 G lens. I’m wondering is it still worth to buy this camera considering 5 years old?. Or should i invest in mirrorless which is Z6ii with kit lens. My only concern is from d750 has 1/4000 shutter speed unlike d780 and Z6ii 1/8000 and 900 seconds, I’m not quite sure this is show stopper.
    Purpose of buying a camera is for taking Portraits, Still, Landscape, Bird, Product photography (learning) and of course my kids.
    It would be really great if you throw some lights on my concern to make a wise decision.... other options I have considered is Nikon D780 with one of the lens and Z6ii with the kit lens... apart from D780 and Z6ii I have been suggesting to go with D850 with the kit lens.
    Thank you and looking forward to your recommendation.

      For fisheye, 15 seconds at ISO3200 is a good place to start. Definitely zoom in all the way after taking a test shot and see what the stars look like. If you plan to stack, you may want to go 10 seconds to get really round stars, if single shot, you may want to go 20 or even 30 seconds.

    I mean, if the focus ring straight up doesn't work I'm pretty sure you could've just sent it back to get a refund or a new copy. That has to be a manufacturing defect, even for a cheap lens like that it's impossible that a not working focus ring is representative for the product.
    Great video and comparison btw!

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +4

      It's pretty amazing how many complaints of this you can read on B&H and elsewhere for any cheap fisheye lens including this one. So sadly, I think it is somewhat representative of this product. Good point about returns though. If buying a lens new for astrophotography, it's a good idea to test it within the return period to make sure one doesn't have a lemon. Unfortunately, I'm so behind on stuff that I bought this in June and didn't test it until September, well past even generous return windows. 😂

I have one other question, you bought a iOptron SmartEQ Pro two years ago, but the review never came out. • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +1

      Do you already have some experience with Astronomical mounts and are okay with tinkering? It is a pretty good mount in that use case, but honestly I now use the Skywatcher Star Adventurer way more when I just want to grab a lightweight travel mount.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +1

      @@ShortysAstrobase Ok, yes, it may work for you then. Here's my nutshell review: build quality, polar scope, tripod are all pretty bad. The build quality and polar scope are worse than cheaper star trackers I own. After I shored up the tripod, changed out the knobs, messed with the tensioning, and use an electronic means of polar aligning (I use a Polemaster), I can get decent results. The tracking/payload won't be any better than your Skyguider Pro, but with additional cable purchases you can connect to a laptop and the ASCOM driver works fine meaning you can platesolve and all that. You might also want to look at the Skywatcher Az-GTi with wedge. I think it's a bit cheaper, more compact, and also offers go-to and computer control. Good luck!

      Some deep sky objects like star clusters will look better through the eyepiece IMO. But galaxies and nebulae will look very different visually than photographically. I have an odd question for you, I have acquired a rokinon 12mm lense for a canon M mount ( I don’t have a m mount camera). Do you know if there’s adapters available?

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому

      Hi Mike, assuming you have a DSLR- unfortunately no, the Canon M series is Canon's other mirrorless line and mirrorless lenses won't adapt to DSLRs. DSLR lenses (EF, EF-S, etc.) will adapt to the mirrorless bodies, but not the other way around. It has to do with how the lenses and cameras are designed to reach focus at a specified 'back focus' from the rear element of the lens. Since DSLRs have the sensor further back in the camera body to allow for the mirror, the lenses are designed with plenty of backfocus and therefore easy to adapt to mirrorless with an adaptor (a spacer, sometimes with electronic pass-through circuitry). Mirrorless lenses designed for the mirrorless system are taking advantage of the shorter flange distance in their design so you can't use them with the older DSLRs. Sorry! Nico

    How did you configure a Canon RA in order to get such natural colors of yourself being not a deep sky nebula? I was told the Canon RA astro camera would be completely useless for skin tones and general photography.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Christoph,
      I don't do anything special, I just put it on Auto WB and shoot. One of the main selling points of this camera over a modified R or any other DSLR/Mirrorless that lets in more Ha, is that Canon developed a special firmware for the Ra that will correct the WB so you get pretty close to correct colors for daytime shooting/filming. WB settings have little to no bearing on raw astronomical image processing, but are a big deal for how I use the camera the most (my main video camera for youtube). I'd say the statement 'completely useless' is way off the mark, and I question whether that person has actually used the Ra for daytime shooting. I find it only still struggles to hit accurate colors on dark clothing, pink flowers, etc., but does a very nice job on skin tones. I will have a comparison to my stock 5Dmk3 on people and landscapes when I finally get around to a full review of the Ra. Cheers, Nico

      Ooh, thanks for the reminder that I wan to try the IRIX wide angle lenses. Not sure about the Arri cinema lens. In general, I've found cinema lenses are hit or miss (mostly miss) on the stars as cinematographers are not necessarily looking for the same qualities in a lens as astrophotographers.

    Would it he possible to do this untracked with stacking?

      Yes, fisheye lenses are great for untracked too! Should have mentioned that in the video.

      @@NebulaPhotos thanks for your reply and many thanks for your helpful video.
      I know it might be a lot to ask but, I can't get my head around what happens to the foreground in stacking then. Would you need to photoshop that in later. Would that work without artifacts?

      @@itsdoublesix Yep, that's one option. There are different schools of thought there, but I would probably just expand the stacked fisheye shot a tad and then place the foreground (from a single shot) with sky removed on top as a layer in Photoshop. That's what I did for the processed shot at 13:30. Another way to go for circular fisheye is just to forgo the foreground altogether and crop to a perfect circle, getting rid of the stacking artifacts. That can look nice too, for example Wei-Hao Wang's shot here: astrob.in/294658/0/
