    I wanted this song to start simple and finish more technical and exciting. I chose to keep a solid foundation of the groove but show some colour here and there and let the momentum build with the song. I also took the break down part of the song as an opportunity to make a "drum solo" section, which was completely improvised.
    Before anyone say's I'm over playing I AGREE! There's no way I would do this live. This is a drum cover SOOOOO CHIIIIIILLLLL lol.
    I really wanted to lift this track in the last chorus, which is why I got carried away and added some double kick... IN A FUNK TUNE!!!! haha. Anyway thanks for watching!

      ***** I think GetTheJojDone has a point: if you look back at e.g. the eighties music and compare it to music today (I mean mainstream), you can see the lack of "richness" of what's played. Today it's more about products than content... I'm not saying that it'd be better if musicians just played everything for the sake of "because I can". But I just can't shake the feeling that there's something less in today's mainstream than was before... less content, less joy, less musicianship. Of course, as you said, it can be found in other genres. It's just such a pain to listen to music where guitarists play catchy riffs and the drummer or drum machine churns on steady 4/4... the problem is it's boring. Unimaginative. How would you like music where all the melody would be 4 notes repeated in the same pattern for 3-4 minutes?

    • @spencerj
      @spencerj 9 років тому +4

      tsavavaa and GetTheJojDone I see based on your location here at a Troy Wright video that you guys are probably more inclined to want to talk about rhythmic complexity rather than melodic complexity when referring to the 'simple' nature of most radio friendly music. I would never try and argue that pop has a *tendency* to be complex because that is not factual, but I will say that there are plenty of pop artists that use complex and odd chords during their songs and still find themselves on the radio. (eg. Taylor Swift, Adele, Muse, and Boyz II Men to list a few.)
      Rhythmic complexity in pop is much more rare, but what you will see is odd time with standard beats, or polyrhythmic vocal parts, which are complex to their own degree. Outkast has a chorus in 11/4 (Hey-Ya) and Beyonce has a post chorus with a 3/4 polyrhythmic vocal hook. These example are obviously more spare, but I'm just some dude that occasionally heard pop on the radio, and never went out of my way to look for it, so I'm sure there are hundreds more of each type of complexity, and even some complex rhythmic orchestrations. Troy Wright, do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @spencerj
      @spencerj 9 років тому +1

      ***** Lol I tried so hard not to reference the Beatles or Stevie Wonder in hopes of accentuating modern pop, but there's really no beating around the bush; Those two groups are truly the quintessential pop masters of complexity. You know Michael Jackson actually has some incredible instrumentals if you listen to some of his more popular tracks. Listening to how solid and controlled the drummer sounds throughout the album 'bad' gave me an entirely new respect for drumming I hadn't known before going back and closely listening to what he plays and how he is playing it. I used to say 'I hate pop' but I shut up real quick learning that every person has an opinion/taste, and that opinion literally *never* correlates to their musical talent. Naturally if you look hard enough, every genre has its own crowd of extremely talented musicians.

    Anyone saying its overplayed.
    Yes it is completely overplayed, but its tastefully overplayed and well executed.
    If you wanted him to play it like the original than you may as well just listen to the original. I'm not here to listen to Uptown Funk, I'm here to watch Troy kill it behind the kit. Keep it up man! Hopefully I can play like that someday!

    Absolutely fantastic playing! This guy is SO underrated as you are without doubt one of the best drummers on youtube. It´s amazing to see a drummer who actually gets the concept behind drumcovers. You are not just playing a bunch of fills for the sake of playings fills, but you make some great musical choises in your playing, and your groove is SO tight! Amazing job Buddy!!

  • @christiancastillo618

    It is not overplayed, if you like it simple then go watch CooperDrummer (he's still a talented musician), but this is a piece that real musicians can appreciate. He played the way HE wanted to not the way YOU wanted. I mean, I don't see the point in uploading a drum cover if it's going to be played exactly the same, unless you want to play rush or something but still, music is about creating your identity and appreciating the techniques used. I appreciate musicians, and I will never talk down on one unless he/she feels like they know everything about music which is obviously impossible. So yeah nice job man, keep at it, and don't let these amateur posers talk down on ya, I'm pretty most of them are just mad because they can't execute such play.

People always annoy the crap out of me when I tell them I mainly listen to Metal but honestly, songs like Uptown Funk could be killers, they have so much potential, but all those commercial wannabees just forsakened instruments to use those damn computers. +andy peacock The song is an homage to the genre the uptown of Minneapolis' funk-scene. This is a funk-song in every aspect of the Minneapolis-funk genre. Even though it differs from Parliament and other Motown-like artists that doesn't mean that you can't say "Since I don't listen to it, that's not the genre"

      Thanks god someone with a logic opinion.
      Seriously , everybody's like " damn that's what the song needed to be perfect " ....that's just too much , yeah , he's very skilled , but he doesn't have any musicality

      marc moi meme Yea, I mean if anything, it just distracted from how awesome and funky this song actually is. I'm with ya man

      While I agree this would be too much for the original song. I think this cover is the perfect blend of flash and straight funk. After all it is a cover of the song. Why not show his skills if he has them. Otherwise listening to the original could suffice if people want to hear drums just tight for the song. Just my two cents

    Excellent job! I like to see fellow drummers play funky beats instead of throwing out every chop they have learned in one song. Towards the end of the song you really turned it up, but kept your playing in tempo. Again. Excellent job. Great drummer!
