Great video. As someone new to all of this, it would be really cool to do a video of you designing a PCB like this and explaining the thought process behind it.
the 4th gen ipod was the last ipod that has firewire support (Usb 3.0 levels of transfer speeds)and also has better charging using a firewire cable. removing the 30 pin is a big no. but this mod really does look promising, good job.
Wow this is great. You know, I would’ve done something like how some other devices work where the plug is recessed and mounted by screw or something directly to the case. Would be structurally solid and reduce risk if messing up the hole. Thanks for the vid
Nice Video. Big Fan of iPods also. Anyway can't wait for you to review FunnyPlaying DMG IPS and how it stack up with RIPS V3. I have the RIPS V3 and curious about FP DMG IPS.
Great mod, man! Stumble upon this bid when I look for gen 4 ipods. I just revive my U2 monochrome 4th gen. Noticing the battery you used is from Nintendo DS line one, is it plug n play or do you need to mod the connector? Anyway, liked, commented, and subbed.
It was absolutely not plug and play. I pulled the interface board off of the original (replacement) battery and soldered it to a cell I salvaged from a DS Lite (really my parts drawer) because it's what I had on hand that fit, not because it's a good battery. ua-cam.com/video/b8X-kkm5fSI/v-deo.html
Is there a safety measure that could be put in place that would disable the 30 pin connector when using USB C and vice versa..to avoid accidental connecting of both at the same time?
Maybe by accident, people can be dumb. lol :-) Just curious what would happen and if there is a way to avoid it...besides the obvious. Love your videos btw. 👍🏻
If I could only solder...I'd do something crazy like add usb c (for charging), turn the 30 pin connector inside and then use a fiio e1 amp connected to that with holes cut out for the little remote thing. Basically bypassing the ipod's less than optimal amp.
Impressive how you found the solderpoints so fast. I can't find D+ and D- on the 5th gen. Could it be possible that they are not even there and only on the 30 pin?
I'm curious... do you have to watch which usbc wall adapter you use? Like would using a usbc laptop charger to charge this be fatal for the ipod? Oh and what does it mean for it to be host? What are the resistors for?
no, any USB adapter should work. The resistors tell USB C host mode adapters that this is a "dumb/legacy" device that cannot negotiate other voltages (well, technically it can in firewire mode but I don't think you can enable firewire charge mode and USB data mode at the same time) so the USB C host adapter will only provide 5v. Like normal the iPod will draw whatever current it needs and no more.
Next thing, you should probably change the storage type, so it accepts microSD cards instead of the pretty much obsolete CompactFlash ones this had (I'm not even sure if they're called that, but they're super bulky, all things considered)...
@@makho I'm not sure honestly, but I thought that microSD cards are more readily available, and I'm assuming come in bigger sizes (please correct me if I'm wrong)... this rules. I love the idea of keeping the 30 pin to be able to use all those retro iPod accessories - some of them are still pretty good speakers!

This is mounted with a screw on one side. The PCB is shaped like a wedge on the other side.

There are several places that sell parts to modernize iPods. Just search for them.
nice job, you can always just fashion a bezel if you don't like the finish
this NEEDS more views!
ok
This give me a little thought, How hard would it be to add a dedicated line out jack to an ipod video 5.5 so you dont have to use the 30 pin for that?

Have you considered printing a bezel for the new port? Something to match the white bezels on all the other ports
I could. I don't really see a point though. I also don't have white filament.

Make sure newer iTunes on the 2nd device is compatible with the iTunes on the iPod, it may be outdated on the iPod and not compatible.
Nice work!
I got a heart attack when the screw and spacer fell out
Random question; can you fit an apple airtag inside of a iPod 4th gen?
you can fit lots of things inside an ipod, especially after you flash mod it
Can you one with only lightning port?
No 30 pin, only lighting!
seems like a downgrade to me
yes but it would be USB 2.0 only, no firewire or accessory support
thought i was watching dankpods for a second
Those two resistors at the beginning... What do they do? Are they just for the correct USB-C to USB-C connectivity?
Like I said, they are for USB C host compatibility. Without those resistors, USB C to USB C cables won't work.
so relaxing :D
Impressive how you found the solderpoints so fast. I can't find D+ and D- on the 5th gen. Could it be possible that they are not even there and only on the 30 pin?
