Uh, he didn't get canceled. He was in the ocean swimming and was drowning. He said to God, if you save me I will be devote my life to you. The undertow stopped pulling him and he got back to shore. He quit music and dedicated himself to Islam.

I listened to Cat Stevens when I was a teenager in his early years. I don't care that he converted to Muslim or what he calls himself now, but after the Twin Towers fell on 9/11 he was denied access back to the United States after making statements saying the suicide bombers that flew the planes into the Towers and killed over 2000 innocent people was somehow justified. I don't care what your religion is, the actual Koran does not endorse killing innocent people.

@@jxchamb In all honestly, he did kind of get cancelled back then. I distinctly remember hearing on the FM airwaves that he no longer wanted to use the name Cat Stevens and that he no longer cared about the music. It broke my heart. We now know different and you are correct with what you said. I just felt I needed to throw that into the conversation. Peace

In the early 70's, we were still fighting in Vietnam. We didn't get out until 1975. Yeah there were a lot of songs about peace. 55,000 Americans died in Vietnam, many of them my age.

A lot of us really believed in peace, brotherhood/sisterhood, understanding and harmony. We actually thought the world was moving toward freedom and justice. Everyone coming together in peace was just a foolish dream we had I don't regret it.

Early 70s they were trying to bring the country back together after the Vietnam war and the Kent State shootings. They wanted to calm everyone down from the assassinations of Robert Kennedy, MLK, Charles Manson in 69', protests and riots. So we had a era of positivity which I feel disco was a part of, we all were together dancing and having fun.

I laughed when you said we, back in the 60s and early 70s, were socially conscious but without being annoying! I promise you, plenty of our fellow citizens thought we were extremely annoying. 😄 I'm in my late 60s now and better understand WHY! Cat Steven's music was integral (along with so many others) to that period of idealism and hope amid tragedy and the lure of despair. It's a great pleasure for me that this song touched you as much so many years later. Thank you for that. I don't think you've reacted to Father and Son yet. I recommend watching the video.

This is an anthem. A show stopper, playing the album, alone or with friends. You 'd stop, a drink, a sip of wine, smoke if you did that. This is like 1972-73. Vietnam still going on and this anthem brought a lot of people together.

Cat Stephens is a special artist as he was almost always sweet, gentle, positive. I love his performances. One of my favorite live performances is a duet with Chris Cornell singing "Wild World". There are several videos on YT of varying quality. I think the best quality is a black&white multicam version labeled "UPGRADE". It is a lovely performance , two beautiful men singing sweetly, less than a year before Chris tragically took his own life. May he rest in peace.

Cat Stevens kept that childlike wonder-- the kind you can't negotiate with-- about why the world can't be a better place, why we can't all get along. You'll find it in this song. You'll also find it in Morning Has Broken, his other introspective gorgeous masterpiece of a utopian world. I love how his songs grab people the way they grabbed you. There's a refreshing earnestness that's unique to Cat Stevens❤❤

It is difficult to really understand the feeling and the meaning of a lot of 70's music without having lived through the 70's. A lot was happening and things felt on edge. I was there also, I graduated college in 1974 and got my first break in a career. But, my family rejected me because after following the Watergate hearings, revelations, and scandal, I showed up at dinner and declared, “that Crook Nixon has finally resigned, good riddance to that phony liar”. My dad, a war hero, and a successful businessman, took Nixon’s side and banned me.
So, yes it’s a lot like today’s MAGA fascist movement, family members can’t talk to each other because half the country is blindly following the cult of trump, the other half want to save democracy from book bannings, the war on history that makes snowflake kids feel uncomfortable.

Two of the greatest albums of the early '70s, (actually of all time), are from Yusuf/Cat Stevens, 1970's "Tea For the Tillerman" and 1971's "Teaser and the Firecat." Not a bad song on either disc. "Bitterblue", 'Tuesday's Dead", "Morning Has Broken", "Father and Son", "Where do the Children Play" are just to name a few. Others from Cat/Yusuf's catalogue are "The Hurt", Oh, Very Young", "Another Saturday Night", (Remember the Days of the) Old School Yard", "Can't Keep it In", and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out", and "Banapple Gas". Great stuff.

Yes, they are still amazingly wonderful, but because we've heard them so many times, they don't wow us like they do you. I think that's why this works as a platform. John Denver and Cat Stevens (along with a few other, specific songs) remind me of the best of who I was as a child. My first summer was the Summer of Love, '67, and my first memory is the Moon landing. Times were different then, I grew up in a wide-eyed, open-minded, changing world of increasing peace and equality. I turned ten in the Bicentennial. There was real hope everywhere out in public. And the child in me grew up hopeful and trusting and dreaming big dreams. Things have changed, but songs like this bring back all those possibilities, and I know the hope, peace, inspiration, and social growth will come around again. The Singularity is on the horizon, and social change is bearing down on us quickly. We're due for some positivity in our luck, so maybe it will be overwhelmingly positive rather than catastrophic.

Speaking of trains, have you reacted to The Ojays' song, "Love Train" yet, Biz? Really needs to be on blast at this point in time, with all the HATE going on! It's one of my 3 most favorite calm down songs, if I'm bent out of shape! Lol. Thank you!

Catch Bull at Four is his best album in my opinion. Whenever I try to narrow down recommendations off it I end up with seven songs out of ten. XD "Sitting" and "Can't Keep It In" would be the most similar to this one; "Angelsea" is my favorite in his entire catalog; "18th Avenue" and "Freezing Steel" are WAY different; "The Boy with a Moon and Star on His Head" and "Ruins" are both masterpieces of storytelling (though "Ruins" is emotionally devastating).

What you see, is what you are. 'The crow sees the dead and dying in the garden. The butterfly only sees the flowers.' Our minds need purifying so the soul can act and shine. The time will be here soon. The Peace train will be here soon.

Just for your own personal education and to get a better feel for the times, learn about the riots at the 1968 Democrat Convention in Chicago. Also the Kent State massacre in 1970. Now add the Viet Nam War and the draft, the assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK, race riots, college sit-ins, the introduction of drugs into high schools and colleges, Watergate, Gene McCarthy, and on and on.

I agree with your thoughts on human nature but I still believe in the possibility of a new, improved world too (maybe it's the hippie in me).

You've heard of the saying "Be the change you want to see in the world" often credited to Gandhi. Not so thought. He did say “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the reality of what this song is describing. Music is so important in documenting generational history. IMO, music is both chicken and egg in the role it plays in belief systems of the younger generation at any given time (at least it used to be). The older I get the less I believe in the existence of/power of “human nature”-at least the idea that human nature takes away our choices regarding picking self preservation over community. I believe we are so much more impacted by external events when it comes to determining where we stand. You can observe how things cycle in a similar pattern throughout history every 20 years (generation) or so. Some believe generation identity is stronger even than religion, race and economic class. One can hear what Stevens is proposing in “Peace Train” as idealism, but I think what he’s saying is it’s possible if, as a group of humans, we keep our eyes on the prize even when external events distract us and make it seem impossible.

There was a tremendous Peace movement in the late 60s and early 70s and the nation was terribly divided. It was not a peaceful time at all.
