TRACK Mazda RX8 Cooling Mods

  • I finally get back to work on my track mazda rx8. I do some cooling mods, upgrading the radiator to an aluminum koyo rad. Also replaced the thermostat with a mishimoto low temp one. While I was working on it, I replaced the coil wires with new NGK ones. Can't wait to get this thing back on the track. Still need to make an aluminum undertray which I will fabricate when my TIG welding skills get better. Hope you enjoy!

Dont forget the foam around the radiator 👌 the stock radiator has it, The koyo needs it as well.

A lot of guys feel the need to install lower temperature thermostats, realistically all these do is cause the engine to take longer to warm up, once up to temperature the thermostat is open anyway, regardless of standard or aftermarket thermostat (the engine normally runs well into the 80s and 90s) and I know there have been cases of aftermarket thermostats actually failing to open.
Apart from that I like you channel and its good to see someone who has a passion for the car.

Exactly.. my biggest mistake was installing a lower temp thermostat in my rx8.. my coolant temps never fully warmed up unless it was above 65°F outside. Only useful if it's a track ONLY car for the summer.

Koyo rad was my go-to when the plastic broke on my OEM rad; I also have the mishimoto thermostat, and I had a tuner go into my ECU and turn the fans on 5 degrees sooner. Stock OEM fan curve turns first fan on at 97C, and the second at 102C... now I have mine set to 92C and 97C respectively. I'm intending on doing something about the oil cooling as well sometime soon. Most people say to just get an RX-7 thermostat to make the oil cooling happen sooner, as the stock RX-8 coolers are pretty good. Replacing the oil cooler lines on the RX-8 is something every owner should think of at some point in the future, as they are notorious for rusting out and leaking if driven through salty roads.

Great job! Would it be possible, for your next driving videos (on the road or on the track), to fix a camera on the pedalbox, like you did for your video where you learned how to make a heel-toe, to see your footwork with the car and your evolution of your techniques please? :)

Great video as always! What thickness is the Koyorad radiator? Cause I want to upgrade mine and the 53mm thickness requires an extra hose set due to the lower outlet being in the middle instead of the side where is the OEM one located. And I saw yours is same as the OEM one, so must be the 48mm or the 36mm. Thanks!

I think you might generate lift with that cooling tray design because you plan on feeding air to the radiator underneath the car right? I imagine doing so will cause pressure to form where there used to be none (or not as much) and air likes to go from high to low pressure and so you'll get front end lift (or increase lift even more), plus you'll be adding another entry point for air to enter the engine bay but without increasing a way to extract it; your incoming air is going to hit LA traffic in your engine bay.
A better design to increase cooling is to make it easier for incoming air (that you already have through the grill opening) to exit out by way of hood vents or something (so that air molecules can easily exit reducing air traffic congestion, pressure and lift). And try and keep the air underneath the car as clean as possible. Maybe you could make use of those side vents if they're not being used.

Perhaps I did not explain it very well. I am using the under tray to force air coming through the front grill through the radiator, not feed it from underneath. I will definitely look into adding something behind to aid in venting and air flow.
