    ive had a 04 RX8 since 2005 but stopped driving it in 2010, so its been sitting in my garage collecting dust. You and Driven By Madness have inspired me to give it some TLC and get it back on the road... Cheers for that... =)

    Really good job man this video is very entertainment.... I am about to buy an Rx8 but I am of scared for engine failure.... how much compression your rotors have right now? How many miles is safe to say that a, well maintained, rx8 goin to make before the engine failure?

    • @Mitch3343
      @Mitch3343 7 років тому

      ΕΥΛΟΓΗΤΟΣ Well sir. It's not that simple. The miles dont matter as much as the care does. Not a lot of people cared for thier rotarys because they didnt even know it wasnt a piston engine. I recommend reading through RX8club before purchase. One thing to remember is Rx8s dont have a lot of low end torque.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому

      Thanks man. I'm not sure where compression in my motor is, but there is no indicators that it is unhealthy. I agree with Hating Finding a Username, the maintenance and care is more important than the mileage. A properly maintained Renesis should do 200k+ miles. If you are worried about fixing the niggles and reliability, I'd recommend searching for a Series 2 car (09-11) as they had most of the issues sorted with those cars. Mazda also gave every car an 8 year 100k mile engine warranty, so the 2010-2011s would still be covered under that factory warranty.

    Hey Quinn! My rx8 is having a funny subliminal knocking sound sorta like krongkrongkrongkrong during startup for 15-30 seconds when the car is left cold for 2-3 days. Would it be a case of bad ignition coils ? I have replaced plugs, starters, checked fuel pump, fuel injectors and even the OMP. Any thoughts ?

    Awesome video. Thanks for the upload. The RX-8 actually does have a gas cap holder that is built onto the gas door itself. It's kind of awkward to use, but either way, I love that Bennet Built version so I'm buying it anyways.

    I think the reason for the spacers holding your coils up away from the mounting plate is to make arcing from the coil to the plate less likely. This is just my theory but if you look at bad coils they do seem to look like there has been some high voltage arc over. I was thinking of putting under the coils some form of insulator rather then just space them further away. I don't really the voltage that the coils generates but it is very high voltage and I seen how far a spark can jump and how it can blast through things. I did an experiment with a 10,000 Volt transformer and blew holes through a model airplane (Plastic) then tried a drinking glass (Which is a really good insulator) and after holding the lead against the glass for a while did punch a hole through it. So the plastic glop on the bottom of the coils might be a pretty good but with spark voltage? Moving that base further away is a smart move. I don't see how any heat from the coil is drawn off by the plate so... My two cents worth.

    My 2004 RX8 had these symptoms last week (down on power, cat glowing red hot, car refusing to start and idling crazy low to the point that it barely feels like its on at times). Had an engine rebuild back in 2017 and have barely done 10,000 miles since then. I am going to replace the spark plugs , coil packs and leads as I was planning to do that anyway and the oil metering pump as I am getting error codes P0302 (2nd Rear Rotor Misfire) and P01687 (Metering Oil Pump Malfunction) I hope this fixes it but for now I am confide to the motorbikes

    What is the difference that resulted in you choosing this over the SakeBomb and BHR coils?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому

      The biggest factor for me was the price. At the end of the day, spark is spark. As long as you have coils that can produce a strong enough spark and recharge quickly enough for the next spark needs to occur, then you'll be fine. In the Miata world, there is a common belief that you need to switch to coil on plug (COPS) because the factory coils are inadequate. Let's just say my turbo 254 whp Miata and 185 whp all motor Miata are still using factory coils and OEM NGK wires with no issues blowing out the spark. Rotaries have a little more demand for spark, but there is no magic coil out there. The only concern with using stock coils is the short lifespan, however that is supposed to be resolved now with the revision 'C' coils that are available.

    Nice video but man, ditch that engine cover. Unless you drive it in the cold/winter and want to have the engine up to operating temperature faster, I've noticed my rad's fan not to spin as much as it did with that thing on even in summer with 30+ °C ambient temperatures. After long use in the summer in the past I've heard the fan to spin for a long time (the first time I got the car, it spun for like almost 10 minutes!), without it in a comparable climate, it spins for much less time than with it installed. Engine cover.. it's just a cosmetic thing.

    So why not the BHR system? The coil pack is inline instead of stacked.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому

      The BHR system is almost double the cost. The GM coils and adapter pigtails are relatively cheap parts if you were to build your own ignition kit. I've gone down the rabbit hole with obsessing over ignition in the past and it doesn't lead anywhere meaningful. At the end of the day, as long as your system can create the spark needed and it is not blowing out, then there is no difference or performance benefit.

    so i installed these coils in my car yesterday and they startup fine but i sometimes notice a little sputter here and there at idle that never happened before the installation. is this normal?should i be concerned? does the ecu need time to adjust? also i had a check engine light before the install that went away after installation. anything you may know about this ?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому

      Hey Nick, my car has always sputtered at idle a little, even with stock ignition components. I think it is just normal. You should be able to pull the code the car was throwing, it might have been misfire codes if your old coils were on their way out. Also, yes you can reset the ECU and let the car relearn with the new coils and see if that improves anything for you.

    Great video thanks so much for the info! I have a rx8 04 with 84,400 miles had purchased used with 51,100 about 3 yrs ago. I replaced the starter back in 2016 (not a 2.0 kw that I hear might be better) and alternator (remanufactured from dealer 4/17). I had some starting issues and cell codes that came up 1/5/17 P0443 purge valve and P0302 miss fire in cylinder 2 and my engine light was on prior to my inspection due 1/17. Thus my reason for getting all of this done including new ignition coils,spark plugs and vapor canister valve or known as Canister Purge Soleniod. I just had my car serviced at dealer (Last week 12/17) for recall 1017e of fuel tank leak issue and had fuel ring and gasket and fuel pump etc and they also did the other recall 1117e for 04 rx8 remove and replace both lower arm ball joint and front lower control arm. Now yesterday (after having car sit 2 days due to 2 snow events here in Philly) I started the car after 2 or 3 tries and after not having any cell codes or engine light come on had the engine light glowing. I took it to the same place that serviced my car back on 1/5/17 thinking maybe was spark plugs and ignition coils and purge solenoid etc and he pulled a code P2070 claiming was IMT Valve Stuck Open and not the other things mentioned related to all the ignition work I had done. I say all this because I have a 24,000 miles or 2 yr warranty covering the parts and labor they gave me free with the work done on the car 1/5/17 with Confidence Plus North American Warranty. I called them and they assured me they would honor the repairs as long as 25 miles from service performed on car. But here I sit with this NEW code and wondering how I RESOLVE this?? I had the work done back on 1/5/17 at that time with 75,760 miles and now have 84,400 as mentioned not even 10,000 miles since having everything replaced! I TRULY love the rx8 and would like to keep it but now with all of this and facing my current inspection due 1/18/18 I just don't know how much more I can do?? It feels like a repetion of what I had the year prior almost same time and gotta think having the RIGHT coils, spark plugs and such would have to make a BIG difference in the performance of the car? I thought of BHR or comparable like you have used thinking it has to be better than what I have? I have tried to keep the car as best as possible using Continental Extreme Contact 225/45/18 tires and really kept it otherwise stock (auto with upgraded leather seats and moonroof etc) I know the warranty I have after speaking to them on phone mentioned they would cover the $847 I spent at that previous shop. Do I take it to another shop 25 miles away and see if they can RESOLVE this? I just know it has to be a "good thing" to have this done and want to get as much bang for the buck out if this warranty as possible. They even said you can go to a dealer and they will replace the ignition parts etc but if I go there then going forward I would be under dealer warranty going forward. I guess need a little guidance best way to handle this?? I should mention I have not had a Compression test done and wondering is THAT my next step before doing anything else?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I really would love to keep the car but I'm just wearing thin on how I can DO THIS and not go broke in the process! I mean is it just ditch everything and get a 09+ rx8 that is sorted out better than what I'm dealing with now?? I've already dumped heaps into this so far. I'd love to get to a conclusion and know car is right!
    Appreciate any help that can be provided! I live in NE Philly does any one know a reputable rx8 shop that works just on rx8s I can take it to?? Trying to be optimistic here?
    Thanks,
    Nate

      The P2070 code would mean that your SSV valve is stuck. I have seen some people get false positives for this. I would reset the ECU either with a scanner or by disconnecting the negative battery terminal (remember disconnecting battery will give DSC lights until the yaw sensors calibrate again) and see if the code comes back. If it does, I would look into cleaning it either yourself or a shop who is familiar with this service. Some will try to sell you a new intake manifold.

      Garage Quinn Motors Hey thanks for the reply! I did have the shop I originally took to back on 1/17 reset it for me yesterday and so far no code showing. But I guess if does come back have shop clean it as you said. Do you know any reputable rx8 shop that work JUST on rx8s in NE Philly?? I also found out when had my car serviced recently at dealer for the recalls I had that they saw my motor mounts are bad. Car does have small vibration on dash when I come to a stop but during drive seems fine. Any help appreciated?? Do you think a Compression test would be wise also as have starting issues both hot and cold?
      Again thanks for any help!

      You're welcome. Unfortunately, I do not know of any shops in PA to recommend. Why did they say the motor mounts are failed? I would look at how much the motor shakes while running at idle. Dealers like to recommend stuff when you don't necessarily need it. If you are having hot startup issues, then I would run a compression test on the motor.

      Garage Quinn Motors Right I agree! Yeah well was my fault as I mentioned to them the vibration I had was with my dash when idle or stopped at a light..then they either looked or tried to sell me an upgrade? Car rides fine to me otherwise no major shaking while driving I can tell. They did say that it's there and if I didn't do with them would not pass inspection! I will go somewhere else and not mention anything see if they find anything? Again thanks for advice!

    really looking forward to this. i am so tempted to jump into an rx-8 but have the worry of the misnomers of the rotary.

      You could spring for an S2 model (09+), which has most of the issues sorted out already.

    Do you think an MSD Ls 2 step can work with this upgrade ?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 років тому +1

      I am not sure. I think if you have an ECU that supports 2-step that you can tune, that would be the route to go if you want that as the LSD for LS might be assuming an LS firing order which is definitely not the same as rotary :)

      Very true. This vid just added a new coil system to the top of my list. Right next to an ingen ram intake I've been wanting for my 8 👌

      Not to bust your nut, but the stock airbox *is* a CAI. You will not gain a single horsepower changing the airfilter system.

    Hade you noticed any power difference? Or any difference at all except the more smoothness?:)

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому +1

      Yes, mostly in the 6-9k RPM range. I wouldn't say it is more smooth, but you can definitely feel it gained a slight bump in power, but this is most likely because my coils were crapping out.

      Garage Quinn Motors Awesome! Just ordered from Bennett myself! Love your channel man!:) I have a question, I’m running cat less atm but I need to pass emissions test this spring, will an eBay cat work for the moment, like will it clean like the OEM?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому +1

      I do not have any experience with the eBay cats unfortunately, so I
      cannot say for sure. I do have a catless mid-pipe w/ built in o2 spacer
      that came with the silver RX-8 I bought. I think it is eBay and I have
      been running that on my car. I did throw a check engine initially, but
      it eventually went away and never came back, so I thought that would
      actually pass readiness.

    • @jakefox221
      @jakefox221 6 років тому

      so ive just used an ebay cat to pass the mot (im uk) and it passed emisions beautifully but i had to reset the ecu then run the car through the driving process to let the ecu learn the new setup i can find the driving process if you need

    I will be receiving my bennett built in a couple days, great vid, btw. Question, the original connectors to the coils, are they color coded from the factory? So you know what oem wire goes to what coil?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому

      They are not color coded, but they are in order from left to right so you can keep track of which is what that way.

      Well they came as advertised, no need for color coding. Just pay attention. They work great. I do have starting issues but i think its my injectors. Good luck. They worked great.

      Preston Brown Thanks for replying man! Im currently on the revision c coils. Installed them @ around 35k miles, going into 88k right now. They've been great but i think im pushing it lol so its time to upgrade and be done with them. Thank you sir!

    Whaf if my rx8 isnt getting any crank or start what will be fhe problem to that?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому

      If it is not cranking at all, I would start with the battery, starter and ignition solenoid. Then proceed troubleshooting from there.

    • @benjamans12
      @benjamans12 6 років тому

      Garage Quinn Motors I've checked battery, starter, ignitions, coils, alternator. All I have left is the starter

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому

      Try tapping it with a hammer while someone tries starting it if you can. Alternately, I think most local auto part places will test your starter for free if you bring it to them, but I did once have a starter that passed the bench test and still wouldn't crank the engine. You can always just pick one up local and return it if doesn't resolve the problem.

    • @FPS0Russia0fan1

      Benjamin Sanchez might need a new starter.

    How come you don't see these cars on trackdays etc? Is it because of some issues regarding reliability of the engine? What are the cars weaknesses?

    • @Maattttheww
      @Maattttheww 7 років тому

      I don't see a lot of these cars anywhere. But if I had to guess why they aren't at track days I'd say it's because they're slow and there isn't much you can do to make them fast.

    • @250hdd
      @250hdd 7 років тому

      Rx8's arent the quickest cars around but they're definitely not slow( especially around corners). You don't see them around often because most people are just afraid of rotary engines and the attention they require.

    • @Maattttheww
      @Maattttheww 7 років тому

      I think they're pretty average handling for a 3000lb sports car. You asked about the cars weaknesses before, I'd say it's biggest weakness is the competition it has. I probably wouldn't buy one as a track day car given the plethora of other cars available.

    • @elykus793
      @elykus793 7 років тому +1

      Compared to the rx7 which was 260-270hp and 2800lbs, this car was almost like a betrayal imo. Heavier, slower, taller, and from a looks stand point, i think it lacks there also. Stripping the weight off would probably give great results but that motor needs some work or a swap if u ask me, they do still handle decently and have that rotary exhaust note tho. If you ever look up Hot Version International on youtube u will see some tuning shops run the RX8 and do well, but it's quite costly.

    • @250hdd
      @250hdd 7 років тому +3

      I would say above average handling especially for its 3000lb curb weight. Rx8's are extremely underrated cars I've seen them outrun frs/brz's in autocross events. The only reason they cant really compete with the s2000 is die to their lower power/weight ratio.
      @ Elykus I agree that the rx7 is a beast but the rx8 is the topic on hand not the rx7 so i'm not sure why you brought it up.
