I love teaching people how to paint!
I created The Idaho Painter as an alternative to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to teach everyone across the globe how to paint from the non-experienced to the long time professional. No experience is necessary. My channel is for the home improvement person, DIY painter, handyman professional, home and garden enthusiast, and even the professional painter.
The painter is hot.
It’s the swagger
Really great. I've spent a couple of hours tonight researching DIY refinishing old furniture and this is the most helpful one I've found. Thank you so much for sharing your obvious expertise with us. I'll definitely shop you store.
Never underestimate over spray.
Wow spray painting furniture is definitely more complicated than I thought. Thank you!
Yep
Damn did I stay for the paint or painter
Thank you for all the tips. I believe I am ready to paint my chairs now. However, I would have done upside down first and then turn it over.
Very informative but it would have been nice to see a close up of your technique and if there are any drips or uneven spots. I am trying some white gloss enamel of the same brand on some already primed store-bought shelving and I am finding drips almost impossible to avoid. Then the drips are very hard to sand completely off too. That is why I am looking for tips on YT videos.
Great video! Been browsing several videos as I am about to repaint some furniture and I have found this to be the most helpful! Thank you for sharing these great tips especially about using an additional primer. I appreciate this video
Thank you so much for your video on spray painting. This is a new hobby for me ( newly retired RN :) ) so I am painting my old second hand very used out door rocker chair a black color for my front porch. I have used your suggestions on sanding, cleaning and priming~ so today, I rewatched your video again and now I am ready to paint. One thing I didn't think of, and so glad you mentioned was to do a finishing spray of Varathane for out door furniture since it will be exposed to the elements. Here, we get LOTS of rain and some snow in the Winter, so I wanted to know how to continue to protect this piece of furniture. It will be out doors, under the porch, however will still have moisture and rain during these months. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.
Patty from the Pacific NW~
Patty W! How did your painting project turn out?!?!!
The struggle of spray painting furniture on an apartment balcony
Lol I'm currently sitting on my balcony watching this. Like, how do I do this? 😭😂
cover your balcony and everything on it that doesn't need to get painted in newspapers.
The struggle is real
Your neighbors will -love- you too
@@Kaesewicht You can put a board against the spray?
Oh man I just tried the Rust oleum grey primer works fabulously ! Even On a detailed piece it still got right where I needed it too ,not too bad a smell either . But of course well ventilated area is utmost importance but I hate a lingering rubbery after smell( if you know what I mean ) and these primers are really good .the place you are painting in is very beautiful too love the trees and the brick around them . I really appreciate the extra effort of painting underside of projects it just finishes it . Great job!
I love spray painting , moving into my new home soon so I’ll be restoring a few pieces of furniture, I hate painting with a brush lol. I been painting rims and all kinds of stuff with spray cans! But will be first time doing furniture! Thanks for the vid man!
Good....good....good.....
Sou do Brasil e também sou pintor.....adoro seus trabalhos......recentemente comprei uma máquina da Graco Mark IV....fantastica mesmo!!!!
I've been meaning to paint a round coffee table using hired labour, but after watching this video I'll definitely be doing it myself
to save some money
Thank you for all your tips! I am just beginning and starting with my son's nightstand. I've never done anything like this, but so excited to go to the store tomorrow to purchase all the items needed. Look forward to watching more videos.
Texas teacher here! Thanks for the tips! I just purchased 2 short stools from Goodwill and I will be spray painting them red to match my room decor.
Hope they turn out good, thanks for watching!
Thanks for your help! Heading outside to paint my furniture now.
just love your videos, so informative and explanatory. great job!
Thank you Ellen!
How many stools aprox could a paint can last?
9:17 almost done with video: by the way, the spray is oil based so you might want to wear gloves. LOL ok
Thanks, great video. Sorry, I just discovered your channel and I haven't had time to browse your other videos...did u do one on painting kitchen cabinets? Thanks and aloha.
The guy in Menards claims all paints say the temp and dry times. I started reading different brands and showed him they all had different info. He does not like me any more.
idaho painter I need your help I have the cardboard holder but can't get anyone to send the cardboard sheets to the UK can you point me in the right direction please great videos very knowledgeable keep them coming thanks in advance
Great tips, but I always get better results when using a tack cloth instead of a rag.
That works great!
Very informative! Thank You!
Love the tips, the information was super helpful, Thanks a lot! Have a Good Day!
Thanks for watching!
Very nice video! You were straight to the point and gave excellent tips! I'm new to this and wanted to spray some outdoor rocking chairs, but now, after watching your video,I might paint some stools I have, to use in my 2nd grade classroom. Thank you!!
Glad to help
Pretty awesome
Thanks
Great vid...thanks for posting. I always paint the bottom first to hide any holidays and then work top to bottom, less over spray.
Good way to do it! Thanks for watching!
So I'm not clear. Are you going to primer it? And if you do will it give it a better bite and a more durable finish? ;)
Protective clothing is very important. Aerosol particles can affect the lungs.
Very helpful good tips. Wish I watched it before I painted
Excellent and simple
nice i like it
Enjoyed your video. I bought a few furniture items at a thrift store and wanted to paint them but didn't know how to start or what kind of paint to use. Thank you.
Hope they turn out good, thanks for watching!
I think I would have turned it upside down first.
Can you use water based top coat over the oil base? While I am at it can you use an oil based top coat over water base
You can mix them but if its a water base going over oil base you will need to wait several days for the oil base to fully dry/cure before applying a water base topcoat. Since water drys much faster than oil, it's easier to apply a water based paint that will fully dry/cure quick and then apply oil based top coat.
Hey great video! I subscribed, I enjoy how quick to the point you are, and explain things very well. Thank you!
As a DIY-paint-a-phobe, your videos are always the best. Clear and comprehensive. Thanks.
I want to paint my wardrobe at home is it ok if I use spray cans or do you suggest I should use normal paint and a roller to do it.
Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Thanks for watching Grace!
Awesome Job, so glad i found your channel!!!
What grit sandpaper are you using?
220
What would you recommend to "prime" on bare wood, on a Guitar body.
I'll be using automotive base coats, and a 2K clear coat in the end.
Thanks !
Did you ever figure out what to use?
What do you do when you accidentally do get runs while spray painting?
Have a smooth brush near by to go over it, then light spray again.
@@cocoroco85 thx
Runs are the worst. Get to a toilet immediately.
Great videos. I have a wall with a fireplace and shelving which needs its color changed from burgundy to a lighter colors (the walls a tan, the fireplace a medium gray, and the fireplaces bright white). I've already primed. I'm concerned about the fireplace. It has deep joint lines and baroque surfaces. My concerns is leaving brush marks using brushes. What do you suggest?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Would you recommend using a dark color (Matt black) with an airless sprayer? Black paint seems thicker than most and I would hate to ruin my Graco X7. I’m not a pro so the X7 does just what I need fit my small projects and I’m trying to take care of it. PS - any other videos of recommendations on caring for the airless sprayer? (I think heard you mention anti freeze really briefly in an earlier video)
Hey from Emmett Idaho. I was wondering if you can use a water base poly acrylic over the oil base spray paint to further protect the paint. I'm making a wall board for towel hooks and want a smooth finish that will resist a moist bathroom environment. Oh, and does the waterbase poly acrylic only come in brush on? Thanks and God bless... T
Thanks so much for the video. I am planning to repaint painted kitchen cart. What tools and type of paint would you recommend? should I paint with spray paint or use a brush? what type of primer? what type of sandpaper? I've never painted anything in my life :). Thanks in advance
That intro tho
I got grey primer to paint my stuff white is that good 🤨
Very nice video, I spray primed and painted a "gossip chair" that I bought from an antique store. It looks terrific, thanks to your tips.
I have a small piece of furniture that was originally bare wood that I stained and put polyurethane over. I would like to change the color from walnut stain to gray paint. Do I have to sand-off the poly first?
Awesome 👏 information Thank you 😊. I’m going to paint some chairs now.
Liked how clear the video is. I’m doing an art competition and we are spray painting tables. Really nice video.
Wish i watched this video before i spray painted my dressed black in my all white room😂 rip my white carpets
nice spraycan moves Chris.
So the underside of the seat is yellow? I would have liked to see you paint the underside green, too. I am just about ready to paint a couple of bar stools that have a natural-wood, varnished seat and wooden dowels for the back. I want to leave the seat alone, but spray paint the backs and the legs.
Sorry about the wind lol
lol, I made it work!
Is it necessary to use clear coat on wood?
That was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the tips!
You are welcome!
Beautiful. Thanks.
Well I'm glad i stumbled across your channel. It's very inspirational considering I'm trying to open up a bistro and I've been searching for such creativity...Thanx fam!!
This helped so much, thank you!
How to clean a spray paint run?
You're so thorough. Thank you for this video. Question. Is white primer the best to use for whatever top coat I choose ? I've seen primer in several different colors.
watch your video more than three times, cause I have started on my bar stool want to get it right Thanks! !!
Thanks for watching Hazel!
Thank you very much
Thank you so much sir! This was a huge help. I wasn't sure what the best way to repaint my chairs was and I was scared that the spray paint night ruin it! Thanks again and God bless
This helped alot. Can I use a laquer? definitely subscribing. Also how about a spray paint with primer in it to save time, like Krylon since im planning on changing the colour of my stool depending on the season.
Cheers!
If I am stray painting my dinning room a grey color what do you think i should use to start off with white or grey primer ? And how do i get gloss to it ??
Gracias my friend tomorrow ill start with my project
Good luck and thanks for watching!
Can the Gold color spray paint be use after primer?
Mrscreative47 yes is what I did
What type of paint should I buy to paint wood furniture with my airless sprayer ?? What's the best quality paint to get ? Great video by the way .. thanks
I spray painted something today and the first coat bubbled or walleyed can I do to fix it. I'm guessing sanding and redoing it .
Watching this while quarantine trying paint my table 😭
I liked ur video. Even the video is professional like your painting :) I m new to spray painting. I plan to spray paint smaller household stuff and decor items in 2 or 3 colors like half golden half silver. My biggest problem is in masking when i want to paint 2 or more colors. Problems 1) items are not evenly shaped like this chair in your video. How to mask an uneven item, example a 'S' shaped curved flower vase? 2) masking with paper does not give a straight line as its difficult to tape the paper in straight line. The paper moves and the line will move too 3) masking with cellotape removes the paint that wqs coated n dried before. If u have answers to these will b really helpful
The Idaho Painter I appreciate you took time to read my problem and guide. Thanks.
Most helpful, love the colours and advise. Thanks for sharing !
I'm sorry but I'm a newbie. What kind of sandpaper do you recommend for this? Is there like a certain number or something? Thank you so much.

Special Thanks - Chris Berry, The Idaho Painter
I always lay a drop sheet down etc, before I do any aerosol spray painting! I love 💕 spray painting with aerosol spray cans when doing small projects etc - 😆
thank you that was very informative.
Do you ever use chalk paint on furniture Chris, would you recommend airless spraying or brush?
I added newspaper on the bottom of my chairs on the ground
This video is by far the easiest to understand yet very informative. I wasted my time watching these other chicks went on and on about their lives before they could even get their hands on painting! No more! I’ll make sure i come to this guy first when i wanna paint something.
Thank you for sharing and watching👍
You have shown some very handy tips. Just a suggestion, why didn't you put the stool upside-down first. Spray what you could reach and then turn it right side up and finish off the outside?
That would be a good idea!
Awesome video Chris, however it I am spraying the same color,do I need a primer coat
No need
@@Idahopainter Thanks brother
Very helpful and thorough!! I'm planning to spray paint a dining chair to then sell to a customer, do you think this method in the video will be durable enough for chairs I want to sell? I would prime, paint and seal as you suggested.
Yes, this would work
are you originally from germany or austria? you have a nice accent.. :D
This is a great video. I wish I had seen this before my first paint job last week.😀. Thanks for sharing!
Smells like somebody sh*t a pine tree
I love the scent of fresh paint. I bet your stool smells great.
I am redoing some old kitchen furniture. Do you recommend spray painting the chairs or painting the chairs with paint and a paint brush? I want to do whichever one looks the nicest with no drips and paint streaks
Both!
What shape is that stool in now 3 years later? Just curious.
Is it fine to not use a primer?
Thank you so much for your video! I love to spray pain but I’m not very good at it! Will start using primer and spray on the grass for sure! 🙏🏻
How do you get it to not drip?! I’m using the same stuff on a dresser drawer and it immediately dripped.
Warmer temps and fog coat
What about brush painting
Use Benjamin Moore Advance
Nice job for a quick finish and video too
Beautiful job 👍
Awesome DIY video
thank you
is it ok to add clear coat to a vanity desk after I paint it
