Parabellum Invicta But surely they could have done something to reduce the likelihood of the brakes being locked up instead of removing the servo completely?
Ugh, I forgot all my sources but there was a podcast that talked about public perception. Studies showed that people who claim of stuck accelerators are the elderly or driving unfamiliar cars. It was more likely that the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. A short segment did a test where you gas and brake at the same time. The brake is always stronger than the engine. But Toyota took the punishment rather than blaming the driver.
Ray Chiu The Toyota case was definitely real however overblown do to what you said and other things. It actually took a lot of work to prove there was an issue with the accelerator position sensor.
I dunno. This is just by recall, but I remember that Toyota did try the whole "it's just the floor mats" thing for a while before actually conceding that the pedal mechanism itself was at fault. They were recalling, fixing the pedal mechanism, and still making press releases that it was "just the floor mats". They did handle it better than GM or Ford would, imo, but they did try to play it off as a minor problem or user error until that line no longer flew.

A long time ago, a friend of my grandpa had an Alfa Romeo Alfetta. One day, the car was about one year old, he forgot to put the handbrake on when he parked it. The car then rolled down the slope to a underground car park, hit the wall with about 10 km/h - and burst into flames. Why? As we all know, the Italians invented electricity. And in the Alfetta, the battery sits just a few inches behind the front bumper. The negative pole was balanced with the body of the car, so basically, the entire car was loaded negatively. The plus pole however was just a few inches away from the front crash bar. Due to the impact, the plus pole touched the negatively loaded crash bar, causing a short circuit and then a fire. The car was completely destroyed.

Your description of both the Pinto's supposed flaw and Ford's reaction is an urban legend. The car was no better nor worse than other cars of the 70s when it came to fire risks. The letter used by lawyers and the media to show Ford's supposed callousness was actually a cost-benefit analysis requested by the NHTSA which was evaluating the potential societal benefits of new safety standards and involved all cars produced in the US by all manufacturers. Of course, once litigation lawyers and Mother Jones got their hands on it, they gave it a completely different spin...
A while ago my mum had a brand new 2004 Mitsubishi Grandis which would randomly start accelerating, one time she was on the motorway with me in the front seat, a five year old at the time, and my brother in the back, a 2 year old. We were at around 80mph when the car randomly started accelerating, the mat was not caught on the pedal nor was my mums foot anywhere near it. She panicked and started pushing on the brake pedal with the car then at 105mph and she could smell the brake pads melting, she put it into neutral and pulled over as soon as she could. Mitsubishi denied it was a fault of the car and blamed my mum. She then sold it and got a 2006 BMW 3 series. Smart woman.

The way Lancia handle the brake issues by removing the brake completely is the perfect way to get rid your customers. And it’s already proven by themselves
I've actually read before about the Pinto's failure. Ford engineers discovered a solution which consisted in putting a rubber bag inside the fuel tank, which prevented the car from catching on fire , but it raised arround 15$ the price of the vehicle. The president of Ford told them that the Pinto couldn't cost more than 2000$ and weight more than 2000 pounds(for marketing reasons), so nothing was done and till 1978 arround 4.000 people burned to death in this vehicle. Since I know that i don't look at Ford in the same way.
Well that's almost correct, actually a max of 180 deaths were due to that failure even though some BS claims have made it seem worse. Look into any Auto Manufacturer and you will see that they all ignored safety to save a few dollars at some point especially way back in the 70s. Think GM being the most recent one with their ignition switches. When you take the $2 fix and times it by the millions of vehicles sold, then add the labor charges to change it out. Doesn't take long for a CEO to get greedy and ignore the issue.
The mounting bolts on the tank straps were too long which caused them to rotate on impact tearing open the fuel tank.Fix was a kit with shorter bolts and a plastic panel/guard .I personally owned a 1974 hatch and it was a great car.
I thought it was due to the fact that when an engine is being revved, the fuel mixture becomes more rich because the engine is accelerating. As the engine is accelerating the exhaust gas temperatures rise (richer fuel going through hot catalytic converters means climbing temperatures) and unburned fuel can reignite in the exhaust system when it reacts with oxygen, thus causing a fire at the exhaust tip (yellow Aventador in London revving its engine wildly and a fire breaking out - also on UA-cam somewhere).
I think it only does that if the ignition goes ever so slightly faulty, but you could be right. After all they can also spontaneously do a 90 degree right turn at highway speeds...
I wonder about"Vintage Cars are Death Traps?(Is it because modern cars are death traps, are because their correct, are vintage cars are less costly, but?)
I'm a tech at Toyota and I worked through the "unintended acceleration " fiasco back in 08-09 the problem was the floor mat would get stuck between the gas and brake pedals. We would cut the pedal shorter so it wouldn't catch. But what he don't tell you conveniently is there was no electronics problem causing the car to go, in fact they couldn't duplicate it so they hired NASA engineers to look at it and the never found anything wrong. So what Toyota did is update software on almost everything so that IF it does stick then when you hit the brakes the computer will kill the throttle.
I remember the Pinto problem (from learning the story and seeing actual footage of the problem because I wasn’t around back then XD) but if I remember correctly, the gas tank wasn’t the only problem in that scenario, it was also an electronic problem with the blinker or something that would actually ignite the gas after the tank was ruptured causing an even bigger, deadlier problem. Shows you how much Ford cared about their customers safety at that point
I dunno about elsewhere, but in Norway that elk test is mandatory for everyone who wants a driving liscence, as part of a one-day slippery surface driving course. You even get to do it three times, first in normal conditions, then in wet conditions, and finally in super soapy what-the-hell-am-I-even-doing-here-oh-my-God-I'm-gonna-die conditions. Extremely fun day. Recommended!
I used to hate on auto people a lot but then I drove through roadworks jam on autobahn once... When you are stuck in stop-go traffic stick shifting gets really, really annoying. And don't forget, Americans are kings of traffic jams...
I live close to Detroit and the GM faulty ignition switch issue was BIG. It was on the news very often, they mostly talked about lawsuits from people who got in an accident because of it.
Here in the Philippines, there was multiple events of the Mitsubishi MonteroSport accelerating outta nowhere, aka Unintended Acceleration. It happened about a couple of times, this happened in 2014-2016, I think. They recalled it then they made a fresh new model with a different body and they made sure the the unintended acceleration wouldn't happen again, though it's hard to believe, but hey, you'll never know when it'll happen.
Just replace the gasket... if you buy new engines over a piece of rubber being busted i would love to see how many people scammed you. Head gasket keeps oil in and by itself is a minor issue. No oil ruins engines. If a gasket blows you replace it in say 30 minutes. They even now have sport gaskets so if a car has a inadequate gasket the reinforced sport gaskets will do the trick.
@@oceanbytez847 it takes 30 minutes alone to unscrew the under engine protectors so that the coolant can be drained before any of the other bolts have been touched. It is more than 4 hrs. to replace the head gasket ...
I will say one thing on the Key Failure recall mostly because I work at a Chevy Dealer and still have to hand out recall parts for this recall. the only time the ignition switch had the issue of turning off was if you had lanyards and such on your key chain. the keys, ignition and key fobs were designed to be a just the single key and the fob on the key ring not all the lanyards you can find and all your keys.
My mum had a peugeot 206 and a man in a toyota was driving out of his drive way and.... the accelerator got stuck and he hit her car and a tree.Oh Do I love toyota 😊
Few others i found here in the uk, psa group ignition switches staying engaged on the starter causeing the starter motors to catch fire, Recently seen a 2018 dacia sandero with push button start do the same Gm/Chevrolet ignition switch ramdomly engaging the starter motor with no key inserted Vag 1.9pd tdi ecu map, there was a error on the programmed map that caused some cars not to start when hot, Alot of people replaced batterys and starter motors which appeared to fixed it at first then the fault comes back, It came down to fuel starvation, the engine was not spinning fast enough for the ecu to inject fuel as it determines when from the crankshaft sensor, thats why after a new battery or starter motor the engine spun a little faster, so the ecu injected fuel so the engine could start
There's one you should have mentioned that is largely reasonable for many countries having safety testing to begin with. The Chevy corvair. This little rear engined car, truck, and van (yes the corvair was built on several different bodies but it's all the same vehicle) had an issue that GM ignored for a few years then tried a recall which didn't fix it so the go made them shut production down. They liked to catch fire because of bad wiring and poor ventilation of the engine at the rear of the car.
Re: The Peugeot brake problem. We had a 93 Saturn that as a passenger one could find the spot on the upper floor board where one could activate the brake. Lots of fun when the Mrs. drove.
I know for a fact Toyota cars accelerators do not stick to their vehicles, it was basically the owners fault for not clipping the mat down how it suppose to be fitted to the floor , some not all Americans Don't like that fact that millions of Americans love their Toyota vehicles because the reliability is awesome, so some people would try to discredit Toyota and causing accidents with their Camry and Prius on purpose. Americans cars are reliable as well some brands, but they have a long ways before they catch up to Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus.
I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Black. Totally recognized it. I love my car but then again.... I have not tried to evade any elk (or other sudden obstacles) in it.
Dude my truck can use basically any key to start it, and you can take the key out while it's running, and keeps running, this is the 3rd ignition switch I've put in,they all do it. Good job chevy
I've had a stuck full throttle on early mk1 Fiat Punto back when it was new,...heard it happen to many people who had these, a rubber guide for the throttle cable woud rip and cable would get stuck while full throttle was pressed. Never heard they recalled those.
Chevrolet spark in India also have problems in brake when there 4-5 passengers sitting the car . The brake lines are so tiny that they could not build pressure in then causes brake fail.
~Ford Triton engines with the weak aluminum heads, which would occasionally eject the sparkplugs, making quite a racket. (Sounds like a steam engine basically, with the air rushing in and out of the sparkplug hole.) ~Also, Toyota Siennas with a cable that attaches the spare tire ... when the cable rusts, the tire can fall out while you're driving! ~Early VW beetles were known for catching fire. In fact, if someone sat down hard in the rear seat, the seat springs would come into contact with the battery terminals, causing a nice toasty fire under your bum! ~Takata exploding airbag recall. The propellant to inflate the airbag can absorb moisture that slowly seeps through a faulty seal , causing the explosive to become unstable. When unstable, it goes off with such speed that it causes the inflator canister to explode, ejecting shrapnel into the necks, faces and chests of unsuspecting victims. Also of note: _a truck in Texas that was carrying a shipment of recalled Takata inflators crashed and subsequently exploded, leaving a small crater._ ~On a similar note to the latter, a recent lawsuit has exposed that 18 people have been killed by faulty mercedes airbags which spontaneously deploy due to poor wiring, and cause the driver to crash. (Obviously, without an airbag to protect them from hitting the wheel.) ~Emissions scandals, affecting multiple manufacturers - they created a cheating device to fool the emissions testing equipment. ~The most recent big scandal being the Honda CR-V, with the engine that is SO efficient (according to Honda!), it doesn't get hot enough to heat the cabin in the winter. In addition, because of this, fuel that gets past the cylinder rings ends up in the oil, and doesn't evaporate back because of the cool temps of the oil, causing the oil level to rise significantly, and causing poor fuel mileage. ~Texas Instruments brake pressure sensors: Were used in millions of Ford vehicles. They would leak brake fluid into the electrical connector, which caused corrosion. The major problem was, the sensor always had battery power, even when the vehicle was shut off, so the corrosion would cause short circuits and fires in the middle of the night, or even days after the vehicle was last used!!! ~Ford Explorer exhaust manifold leaks, with exhaust filling the cabin and causing drivers to get sick or faint. ~2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, known for numerous electrical gremlins, faulty TIPM module, and catching on fire. ~2011 Dodge Durango, known for catching fire due to electrical problems with the vanity lamp and the alternator shorting out. ~2017 Volvo XC90, automatic braking system spontaneously brakes hard for no reason, causing crash danger to occupants and vehicles behind.
I had old 2006 Jeep GC recalled for its ignition...it only turned off at a stop light once when my knee bumbed into the underside of where you turn the key, but when it shuts off the steering wheel on my jeep locks....so if you're on a winding road and that happens, youd be either off a cliff or into the wall, nothing you could do.
The issue with the Pinto Fuel tank was not that it would Crack and break apart. The Rear end Bolts in a Mid-high speed collision would be pushed into the tank.
LOL, its so stupid seeing people like u in the comment section... "its pointless", well, tell me how it is a failure when it has saved alot of people? Cause it reacts faster then ANY human. Stop being so damn scared of technology, if u think ur 1960 Ford pickup is safer then any new car with autopilot u r stupid AF. Tesla is ahead of all of their competitors with their autopilot, i dont see u complainin on BMW`s autopilot thats shit in comparison? I think u need to read some damn facts before u comment. U r also not supposed to release ur grip on the steering wheel while the autopilot is on, Tesla is a level 3 autopilot, not level 5 which is capable of driving all by their own.
Problem with Tesla is it's a tech company, not automotive one. Let me explain myself, although they make relatively good cars, they don't have much experience in that industry. For example, Mercedes-Benz have S Class that can drive autonomously, which includes - acceleration, braking and turning, with a help of sensor that detects driver presence by measuring weight applied to the steering wheel. So, if you put some light weight on it, the car "thinks" there is a driver present, and it will take you to your destination pretty safe. I'm petrolhead myself and driving internal combustion engines is my passion, but it's quite nice when you "order" your car to drive you while you chill on the backseat. The only difference between Tesla and Mercedes is the latter didn't market it like it's something big, so the media didn't really catch on that feature.
Suzuki's brake thing wasn't a defect, it was a "safety feature" that was meant to prevent your foot from getting hurt against the pedal upon impact so it swung away. It was still stupid though because the brakes couldn't be applied anymore. And GM's ignition switch problem wasn't that you could switch off the ignition while driving, you can do that in pretty much any car that has a key ignition. The problem was that the cars would shut off without warning to the driver.
New Toyota Hilux also almost tipped. And to add to the Jeep story, lets forget that they are built poorly and are really unreliable, the renegade lifts rear wheels of the ground on heavy breaking. So all in all, after all this, i would advise people not to buy Jeep as they seem to be shitty cars.
Speaking of that Jeep Grand Cherokee, that was the model that killed Anton Yelchin (may he rest in peace) because of the poorly designed shift lever with no clear way to tell whether the car is in park or neutral.
The Merc A-class did not roll in the Elk Test. It became extremely unstable and gave the impression that it *might* roll, but that's not the same thing as actually rolling, is it? Also, the Lancia Beta was notorious for simply falling to bits from corrosion, so removing the servo assistance from the brakes was probably just a minor inconvenience...
IIRC, the Pinto received a bladder that cover the fuel tank to protect it in a rear end collision. The 80mph rear end collision issue is actually on the panther platform Ford vehicles (crown victoria, grand marquis)
I was going over an air show up north of where I live and was following a Jeep Rubicon when going up the exit ramp the wheels started wobbling out of control, I looked it up on my computer to find out that it was a common thing called the “death wobble” which is common in newer Jeeps
4:33 That would be the PERFECT Driving Instructor's car for any RHD country, since they wouldn't have to install a brake pedal on the passenger side when the mechanism already exists.
Another problem with the Pinto was, in a high speed collision, the doors would become jammed shut. The car also still caught on fire, so victims were trapped inside a burning car.
"Oh, brakes are broken? Let's remove them! You can't say they're broken if they're not there."
...WTF Lancia?!
Nah lancia took it seriously and retired all car until a fix wa found 2 years after it wa fixed

2) The flip-over ford explorers
3) VW Smog fakery

That’s bullshit! The total deaths from Pinto fires I found were 27.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pinto
Ford fixed the problem with a plastic bar in front of the tank but they didnt released it.
The mounting bolts on the tank straps were too long which caused them to rotate on impact tearing open the fuel tank.Fix was a kit with shorter bolts and a plastic panel/guard .I personally owned a 1974 hatch and it was a great car.
The Elk test is also known as the Moose Test in America

What about the Lamborghini aventador sv catching on fire when you rev the car to much?
Any car will if you rev it "too much"
Liam Thomas lmao that's what I thought haha
Liam Thomas No, no it doesn't. Race cars rev for hours on end when racing, it's just Lamborghinis bad design
Fiat Multipla...

The Fiat Multipla is awesome dude

Phoenix Intergrale The only problem is the hood of the first model. The second was awesome though.
How could you forget the original Audi TT? A German coupé that was undrivable at high speeds, and crashed when you touched the brakes....
2:39 Toyota, moving forward. Straightforward logic.
4:09 I thought he was going to say England in my city 😂😂😂😂
hahhaha
I love the animation! A Ford Pinto hit by a Suzuki Celerio from behind. Imagine THAT!
We have something similarly in Sweden. Cause you know. ICE AND SNOW AND POLAR BEARS WALKING OUR STREETS.
"Anyone who's been stuck behind a slow Toyota driver knows that any acceleration experience is probably unintentional." LMAO!!!
Don't see why stuck accelerators cause so many crashes. Just knock the car out of gear!
Nothing much. Exactly 😂😂

Nothing much. Well good luck knocking auto transmission car into neutral under throttle ;-)
Turbo Diesel Racing That's why you should drive stick. I don't know why so many Americans drive autos, stick shift really isn't that hard.

The Mk3 Ford Focus RS. After about 3k miles you will need a completely new engine due to the head gasket blowing!
Peaky Fuckin Blinders more like 3 miles
@Heiko Panzlaff takes a shit load less time than getting a new fucking engine
I will say one thing on the Key Failure recall mostly because I work at a Chevy Dealer and still have to hand out recall parts for this recall. the only time the ignition switch had the issue of turning off was if you had lanyards and such on your key chain. the keys, ignition and key fobs were designed to be a just the single key and the fob on the key ring not all the lanyards you can find and all your keys.
Moves from one to another so seamlessly I got dizzy trying to keep up .
My mum had a peugeot 206 and a man in a toyota was driving out of his drive way and.... the accelerator got stuck and he hit her car and a tree.Oh Do I love toyota 😊

I literally just realised that my dads car had the faulty ignition switches problem in his Ford but we never got recalled!!!!!
Few others i found here in the uk, psa group ignition switches staying engaged on the starter causeing the starter motors to catch fire,
Recently seen a 2018 dacia sandero with push button start do the same
Gm/Chevrolet ignition switch ramdomly engaging the starter motor with no key inserted
Vag 1.9pd tdi ecu map, there was a error on the programmed map that caused some cars not to start when hot,
Alot of people replaced batterys and starter motors which appeared to fixed it at first then the fault comes back,
It came down to fuel starvation, the engine was not spinning fast enough for the ecu to inject fuel as it determines when from the crankshaft sensor, thats why after a new battery or starter motor the engine spun a little faster, so the ecu injected fuel so the engine could start

If you passed the elk test you have to try the buffalo test. No one's beat the woolly mammoth test yet but it's worth a shot.
down here in texas we need to do that test and either call it a deer or hog test.

Yeah, but that's in India, not the same as in the US of A.

2:33 - It should say, "Over 40 deaths were attributed to the fault" - not the other way around. That doesn't make any sense.

~Ford Triton engines with the weak aluminum heads, which would occasionally eject the sparkplugs, making quite a racket. (Sounds like a steam engine basically, with the air rushing in and out of the sparkplug hole.)
~Also, Toyota Siennas with a cable that attaches the spare tire ... when the cable rusts, the tire can fall out while you're driving!
Also of note: _a truck in Texas that was carrying a shipment of recalled Takata inflators crashed and subsequently exploded, leaving a small crater._
~On a similar note to the latter, a recent lawsuit has exposed that 18 people have been killed by faulty mercedes airbags which spontaneously deploy due to poor wiring, and cause the driver to crash. (Obviously, without an airbag to protect them from hitting the wheel.)
~Emissions scandals, affecting multiple manufacturers - they created a cheating device to fool the emissions testing equipment.

Tesla's autopilot feature is also a failure. Not only they are pointless but also dangerous.
What did you say? Run into a fire truck!? OK!!!
Thanks to UK here in India too it's fucking right hand drive....

I'm gonna be watching Elk Test videos for the rest of the day now.
The Grand Cherokee should not be in here, it was proved that the car was overloaded, so the test was deemed bullshit
No the test was done with 100kg under official maximum payload provided by Chrysler.

That last one is hysterical.
"I don't know how to fix these brake problems... Fuck it, just remove them."
I expected Lancia to just outright remove the brakes because Lancia
QA: 'We have a problem!' Front Office: 'Don't you dare stop the line, we'll catch it during recall!!!'
