Why in the world does this video have any thumbs down? Great guy teaching kids how to ride a one wheel safely. Informing the public about cool tech. Kids all rushing off to study for finals. Cool dogs. What’s not to like? 👍 Come on people, lol
My trick to determine if people are Goofy or Regular is to ask them to think about sliding in sox in a corridor. And when they show me, they show their natural riding position.

I agree, the dominant foot will want to get off the board first. I tell my trainees to do it that way otherwise they take their foot off the back, which will cause the splits as the board keeps going.
I'm not so sure about this. When I took the "push test" before learning to snowboard I put my right foot forward, but I ride regular on a snowboard. Quite a few of my friends had the same experience.
I would disagree with the dominant foot steps off first notion completely. When I would skateboard I enjoyed having my dominant foot (right foot) in back because your center of gravity focuses on that back truck and back leg and how you kind of tuck your back leg while getting ready to pop literally any trick. I think it just depends on if they're more comfortable having the center of balance on the front of the board or the back opposed to which foot is dominant. If your right foot is dominant does it feel better in back or front? I would always step off with my left cause my right was my anchor for example

That had me hit "proceed to checkout" button, and the new chapter of life began.
Good man, making her practice that dismount. Number one thing a new rider needs to do, hammer the dismount, both intentional and the jump bail. I do let strangers try it on occasion. Just watched this for the second time today right before hopping on my new (used) XR. Thanks so much for all your videos and blog posts Jimmy! I used your guide to buying a used OneWheel to ask all the right questions. I didn't get to test the board because it was sent to me from Louisiana but it works perfectly and was a steal at $1,200 with accessories and only 200mi. Thanks to this video, I learned the jump dismount, the heel up dismount, how to float and within 45 minutes I was cruising around in front of my apartment. You're helping riders all across America Jimmy (I'm in NYC).
I came across someone riding a one wheel while riding my exway. I stopped and watched because I was just curious, I've never seen one in person. Then he walks over to me and asks if I wanted to try it. Now I just wanted to watch, but since he offered I took him down on it. Needless to say I fell a couple times but I was really interesting. Once you got on it the feeling of the one wheel disappears! I then asked him if he wanted to try my Exway but he said it's alright. Cool guy
Chang this video makes me proud. At the end, how diverse everyone was, race, age and even animals! Like this is the type of interactions i wish were around everywhere all the time. Where people can kindly greet and talk and experience different people. Good job man.
What is interesting is I have to learn by myself so I went out. Found the wall kind of leaned on that and I was having a hard way to go so I went back up to my room. Have this big object I can grab and I started rocking back and forth which you call floating. It's crazy that my first time hopping on that thing. That's what I ended up doing naturally. Good video!
Excellent video. Looks like you've got a handful of people who say Dominant Foot in front still. I too think that dominant foot goes in front (most of the time) ... BUT (to restate what I commented on another video) even better is to have them experiment with both "goofy" and "regular" stance. Whichever feels better is going to be the preferred stance. Some experienced boarders ride different stance on different board sports too. Lastly, boards are designed symmetrical. Always more safe and fun to learn to ride both directions😎. I've been meaning to make my own instructional videos since day one. Maybe I'll get around to it someday. You did fantastic, safe, professional job.
Actually, I had a patient and trusted friend who let me learn on his gear, similar style, safety/dismount and slow go... encouraged me to swap stances ... I still have a stronger side, but swapping helps me to feel the differences between, then compensate / correct both ... just ordered mine. Great vids and thanks.
Good boys and good on you for teaching them we’ve all seen how bad the world is and we’ve all put simple kindness on the back burner but that made those boys day gave us wholesome content and helped turn more people on to the one wheel awesome video
Man! I want one! After a lifetime of labor I pulled the plug on my mechanic job 5 months ago. I'm nearly ready to go with my pickup truck and my slide-in camper. I plan to run around the country doing Permaculture projects. I had one of the first solowheels back when that "Inventist" guy was just starting to make them. I got one of the prototypes. I didn't like the way you just roll straight forward but I had it for about 8 years and I put a lot of miles on it. This type of one wheel looks like it would be much better for rougher areas like trails and such. It might be just the thing for when I'm parked but want to roll around a bit at the campsite. I'm torn between this and some kind of folding fat tire bike. There's not a lot of room in a pickup truck camper.
@@freshlycharged I've heard of those. I'd be interested in seeing the review. A non electronic unicycle would probably be good exercise as well. After all those years on the solowheel I imagine I could figure out how to ride a unicycle pretty quickly.
@@freshlycharged Oops, I've basically already owned one. My old solowheel was configured like a scooter. I'd have to ride rolling straight forward. I think it makes you less able to respond to emergencies. Of course it may be easier to ride nowadays since I lost 73 pounds. I went from 245 to 172 since I retired. I've got cancer and I'm trying to knock it out without chemo or radiation. It's my opinion that most cancer deaths are actually due to chemo. Anyway my point is now I weight only 172 so I'm looking forward to riding now that I'm do much lighter.
@@freshlycharged Watched more of your videos; you've recommended/used a number of different wrist straps for protection. I'll be turning 60 this year; what would you recommend for wrist straps, helmet, etc since I don't heal as fast as I did once. Any protection for clavicle/collarbone? Thanks!
Your video is a good example of why living in Colorado is so great. (I live in Cherry Creek school district.) I'm 50+ but am physically fit, and I used to skate competitively. I'm planning to get a One Wheel this spring.

Thats cool u let the boys try it out n no one got hurt, moments like that only happens once in a lifetime. We will never past this way again ,true fact 💯. # God bless 🙏.
I would absolutely not let a stranger get on my board that can go 30 km/hr ( faster than i can run ) and ride around. I dont fear them getting injured i'd fear them stealing my board. I dont really trust people i dont know though. Your a good man jimmy :)
Great video Jimmy I just bought my first XR from a cute girl in Sherman Oaks today getting ready for my first ride literally right after I type this and I blame you ! thanks !
Hey Jimmy I know this is an old video but just wanted to clear something up. You're right when you mentioned the footedness vs stance question. In fact you're the only person I've ever seen reference dominant foot and whether it should be rear vs front in the context of any board sport - so you're ahead of the curve on that. Most people don't think too deeply about it. The real answer is that footedness and stance aren't linked or correlated in any way. It's just as wrong to tell someone their dominant foot should be in front as it is to tell them it should be in the back. People can have either foot be dominant and can prefer either stance independently. The push test you did on Kate demonstrated that her instinctual reactive response to forward motion was to lead with her right foot. The push test shows us what stance someone is rather than what their dominant foot is - so she's goofy-footed and should've been put on with her right foot in front rather than the natural/regular stance you put her in. The same knowledge can be derived by asking someone to slide along the floor in a pair of socks. Most people are actually right-footed just like most people are right-handed but you'll find about a 50/50 split with the push test. Many right-footed people will lead with their left leg. The same people would often kick a ball with their right foot, but it's their natural reaction to brace against forward motion with their left leg in the front and their right leg behind. My family works well to explain this. There are 6 of us who all do a range of boardsports. All 6 are right-footed, but 4 of us are goofy and 2 of us are natural. Basically what I'm saying is that footedness doesn't inform stance (some people prefer dominant foot forward and some rear like you mentioned in the video). That's why we do things like a push-test rather than asking someone which foot they would use to kick a ball. The dominant foot is irrelevant, the thing we're looking for is their subconscious athletic response to moving forward and finding balance. The push test you performed didn't show which foot was dominant - it showed her inherent stance preference and then you told her to ride in the other direction. Source: I'm a snowboard instructor/coach who thinks way too much about the biomechanical properties of riding boards.
This has been eating me up inside everytime I get near a board and am told to get on it different than I wanted to. My buddy let me ride his onewheel and goofy was the only way it get right.
I've let a ton of kids jump on my boards but only in the grass in a big wide open field. No gear required and usually they get the hang of it real quick. I've had an 8 year old jump on and just start trying body varials. My son tried doing a handstand to get on. I actually find it really interesting to just give to a young kid with zero instruction and see them figure it out. The device is so intuitive and kids are so smart it's great to see what happens.
Whenever someone finds interest in my onewheel and we get to talking and the show genuine interest in it, I always offer if they want to try, but like you, I run them through the safety knowledge ...why let them try it, ...because I want to, like you said, spread the stoke
Hey Hey, Jimmy! I sure wish there was a better way t get your videos and similar videos into the hands, eyes, minds of beginner OneWheelers. This is the BEST video teaching technique and your in person technique would be extra helpful too. Well Done. Have to say that the One Wheel is super, deceptively easy to learn to ride...especially having been a skateboarder (back in the day) Now 57 and stoked to be involved in Float Life. As I said, easy to learn, but knowing and really learning proper dismount is critical, as is overall safety measures. This video tutorial needs to be seen and experienced by all new riders...before they wipe out, like I did...twice. One serious nosedive transitioning from pavement to grass and the second a failed dismount on gravel. I also think your compilation video of the most frequent fractures, though painful to watch is a necessary teaching device for beginners. Thanks for all that you do. Float on, Brother.
I have a One Wheel Pint and I’ve gotten pretty comfortable riding it around, but I get terrible anxiety when riding around people or in a city setting. I would love to see a video of how to get over that fear!!
Ok JC, I've subscribed -- something I don't do often. Think I've seen most of your vids on the OW, and this one pushed me over the edge. Good stuff. Still just watching vids re: OW; trying to really make up my mind on taking the plunge on one. Thx for continuing to post stuff up like this; I know this is something you got a feeling for, but appreciate the time and effort; good stuff for those of us thinking. ;-)
Thanks Joseph! More great content to come! Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a deal on a lightly used board! Have you checked out my blog article on how to buy a used Onewheel?
Thx for the reply, JC. Yeah, I've looked at CL locally; for the stuff I've seen, not much of a price diff, so I think I'd go new (and that's my preference if possible). Not really accessible over here in Honolulu, but there is a shop that has a couple; might have to check 'em out over the holidays. ;-) Joe
@@HandsONreviews4u I think I'm just biding my time, RWP. Got a couple of bills I'd rather get outta the way first so I don't feel guilty about it. Lol.
I plan on getting a OneWheel and I feel like I’d let friends try it. For strangers it would depend on how they approach me and if they seem like a good person.
I think it's best to learn the way a person feels the most comfortable, that being said, I learned how to ride a skateboard dominant foot forward, as I push with my non-dominant foot and my lead foot is at the front of the board. I ride onewheel the same way now, but pushing has become obsolete :-)
Yes I do let friends and strangers ride my OneWheel, it's build as a tank. I'm more concerned about the new rider than my OneWheel. The piece of advice I press mostly on is the "jump off of it with both feet EXACTLY at the same time" part
interesting question. At first, I did not let anyone ride/try my Onewheel. but after I became proficient in riding where I felt comfortable explaining how to ride comfortably and correctly to someone. now I let people try it all the time, but I think it's because I myself feel confident in explaining.
That's a red flag for your glutes being extra weak and your lower back is taking up all the slack for the work your glutes are supposed to be doing. Do some glute exercises and that'll knock out your back problem... Your pal, an avid weight lifter who got rid of back pain.

Nice Instructions! The "Regular/Goofy Test" I love it! I used to do the same thing when I taught snowboarding at my local ski resort.
Good video!
props to the camera operator, clearly pulling the most weight
Unfortunately, my camera operator quit. Said I didn’t pay enough. 😂
Great video. With the Pint being announced -- and lower-priced -- it's made me think about a Onewheel.
Awesome video, just got my OW pint for Christmas and I’m totally enjoying it…
Excellent video.
I know I'm late, but this is just an awesome video. I love people in this video. Everybody seem positive and upbeat.

Outstanding tutorial jimmy! This will be my go to video for my friends
“That’s one of the reasons I don’t like the geese” turned me into a subscriber. 😂
Man!
This is great if space is tight! The new electric unicycle are pretty sweet too. I compare the two in a video later.
@@freshlycharged
I've heard of those. I'd be interested in seeing the review. A non electronic unicycle would probably be good exercise as well. After all those years on the solowheel I imagine I could figure out how to ride a unicycle pretty quickly.
@@freshlycharged
Oops, I've basically already owned one.
@@Vention1MGTOW good luck with whatever you choose. It will upgrade your future adventures for sure!
Jimmy, really like your videos on the Onewheel. Bought my Onewheel XR last night and was up and riding in ~ an hour. Appreciate the start here tips.
Thanks for the support. Hope you love the onewheel! Be safe and have fun.
Keep me posted!
Lol. When a friend let me try I just jumped on, no training. Learned the dismount the hard way.
That's some friend! 😆
@@freshlycharged No problem though, that's my favorite way of learning. lol
Caleb Sherman most ppl do 😭🤣
picked up an xr yesterday and the first thing i did was stick a friend on it. these things need to be shared, everyone's reaction so far has proven that to me
Hey Jimmy!!! Thx for all the videos! My Onewheel will come in tomorrow and I cant wait to put all your tips up to the test!
Great video! Helped me before I started riding my GT!
Great job teaching these lads and the young lady how to ride a Onewheel. Yeyyyyyy❤
Thats cool u let the boys try it out n no one got hurt, moments like that only happens once in a lifetime. We will never past this way again ,true fact 💯. # God bless 🙏.
Purchased an XR and a Pint at Bike Factory Hawaii in Waipio after watching your channel. Good informative content. Mahalo!
Just got mine looking forward to learning about it
I taught my coworker and his girlfriend how to ride my EUC about a week ago. They both got it in less than an hour. It took me weeks teach myself.
You must be a great teacher!
I would absolutely not let a stranger get on my board that can go 30 km/hr ( faster than i can run ) and ride around. I dont fear them getting injured i'd fear them stealing my board. I dont really trust people i dont know though. Your a good man jimmy :)
I can run pretty fast. ;)
That's why he asked who they were first
Great video Jimmy I just bought my first XR from a cute girl in Sherman Oaks today getting ready for my first ride literally right after I type this and I blame you ! thanks !
Auto Lode you bought your XR from a cute girl? Huh?
Helpful video. I am waiting for my pint coming. Thanks a lot
That's so cool!! Your daughter is so sweet!!!
A good teacher makes a great student.
Thanks Adam! Great idea. I smell a future video coming!
that was a wholesome video all over. puppies at the end was cherry on top haha
Your daughter !!! IS SO STABLE !!! this is imprésiv seriously !
Thanks Mark! I appreciate the support.
I have a One Wheel Pint and I’ve gotten pretty comfortable riding it around, but I get terrible anxiety when riding around people or in a city setting. I would love to see a video of how to get over that fear!!
Wear dark sun glasses or a full face helmet. Feeling incognito helps you do things you otherwise would not... Good and bad.
Jimmy Chang I’ll try that! I’ve found listening to Post Malone while riding helps as well 👍🏻
Ok JC, I've subscribed -- something I don't do often.
Hey Mr. Allen, taking the plunge? You and me both....lol🤪
Lol.
Hello. Ai have vsett8 48v 23ah scooter. How to make go faster? Meaby controller needs to change. Help me
I plan on getting a OneWheel and I feel like I’d let friends try it. For strangers it would depend on how they approach me and if they seem like a good person.
That's cool, Jimmy. I came here after watching riding this thing and wanted to know how to get started.
I'm subscribing to your channel...
That looks so fun! I want to try it out. I’d probably like it a lot🙂
What a fun experience dude, I love your videos, keep it up 👍
Stranger danger! For me demos depend on the vibe I'm getting and their age, and also how much of a hurry I'm in.. hah! Good stuff as always.
Yeah, this was a first for me. I was already in the teaching mood, so I decided to go for it.
Watching this brings flashbacks of my childhood (prek-7) in Centennial. The houses look exactly the same.
Wow the dog really talked lol awesome video 👍
I think it's best to learn the way a person feels the most comfortable, that being said, I learned how to ride a skateboard dominant foot forward, as I push with my non-dominant foot and my lead foot is at the front of the board. I ride onewheel the same way now, but pushing has become obsolete :-)
who else thought that a karen was going to emerge from the black car
Mikey Strauss XD
I really want to try one of these out! Great video! That mini husky what!?!? Think I want one of those too
Yes I do let friends and strangers ride my OneWheel, it's build as a tank. I'm more concerned about the new rider than my OneWheel. The piece of advice I press mostly on is the "jump off of it with both feet EXACTLY at the same time" part
Completely agree! Spread the stoke!
interesting question. At first, I did not let anyone ride/try my Onewheel. but after I became proficient in riding where I felt comfortable explaining how to ride comfortably and correctly to someone. now I let people try it all the time, but I think it's because I myself feel confident in explaining.
6:35 I was ready for a mafia city add to appear and it to say like level 45 beginner above her
Do these things give you any kind of workout?
Stabilizer muscles in your feet and lower legs. Some core. Nothing aerobic. That's why I do Zumba.
Jimmy Chang awesome thanks
Hahahaha! I love how your videos start very educational and serious, then they turn into "Stranger Things"! :D Great video as always!!
Yea im just startting to use my onewheel and i did notice my lower back muscle was a little sore next day
That's a red flag for your glutes being extra weak and your lower back is taking up all the slack for the work your glutes are supposed to be doing. Do some glute exercises and that'll knock out your back problem... Your pal, an avid weight lifter who got rid of back pain.
Great video.. that nice u let them kids try and ask mommy .. good job
Intelligent approach and interesting video.
Jimmy you’re awesome, enough said.
No. YOU are awesome!
@@freshlycharged Hahahahaha just got major Keanu Reeves vibes “You’re breath taking!”.

Jimmy - what wrist guards/gloves do you recommend? I had my first fall today and tore up my hands.
6:54 what is that?
Great video. Am considering a OneWheel Pint, but have never even rode a skateboard, was a little nervous about spending so much on something I am unfamiliar with.
I got my first Onewheel one year ago. Never did skateboarding or snowboarding. I've had a great time. Consider getting a used one to start. That's what I did.
Good on you for letting them try it
