It’s annoying that on UA-cam, the best quality and most life affirming videos get overlooked. I just love to see your enthusiasm when beginning your new garden adventure. There is nothing more satisfying than recycling and growing, not to mention tasting the most nutritious organic produce! :)

It’s because the algorithm only sees numbers and sensationalism or weird curiosity just causes a bigger reaction with audiences. It’s a shame really because quality content is just not usually rewarded.

@@suburbanhomestead So true. You tube is focued on shorts. Anything longer than 15 minutes, maybe even less, get pushed to the back of the que. Quality productions that Gaz puts out are no longer what this platform is there for. If you already have a very loyal audience who watches all your content religiously and you have no want to grow your audiance then you will do just fine, at the moment. But from what Gaz is hoping to achive I belive it will be an uphill stuggle and only main stream TV could offer him what he wants. I think he is gaining enough attention that main stream TV may possibly happen if he wants it. Its a shame how you tube is now. Its why I watch less of its content.
I do wish Gaz the success he deserves and hope he gets his restaurant some day. I would love to eat at it 😋

@@dal3767 from my years of watching the algorithm effects on my own videos I’ve seen fluctuation. As you mentioned, we have entered an era of shorts. From 2016-2020 long format was being rewarded. Now the algorithm has gotten smarter and is able to pick up on quality through retention. But it is a long ways from ideal. The problem is that sensationalist or addictive content over performs thoughtful or well produced content still. But thoughtful content at least is over performing bland “what I do in my day” long videos that received more attention prevê 2020. Now, what matters is how likely people (both core audience and new folks) will drop everything to stop and watch a video when the thumbnail pops up. This is easier for polemic material, sensationalist/weird claims and drama filled vlogs/ challenges. For a how-to lifestyle as this one, it can be really hard to consistently rekindle people’s attention.

It's also to do with the audience he has curated over the years. This used to be basically a recipe/cooking channel, so a lot of the subscribers are subscribed for that content. They may not be interested in more documentary style videos. But if he keeps posting those videos, the audience will slowly change as well, and they'll start doing better.

    1. The moles don't damage the garlic. If the garlic is pushed up from underneath you can just push it down again.
    2. We have moles in our garden but we don't have raised beds and I'm okay with a little damage here and there. (It pushed up one corn plant and two beans). However, a few days ago we discovered an unusually big pile of dirt. We didn't think it was the mole and we just dug into it. Well. There were six baby moles in there and unfortunately we had no idea how to save them.
    3. There is softneck garlic and hardneck garlic. The softneck can be stored much longer. If your garlic was a nice little ring of cloves around a hard stalk at the centre, then you planted hardnecks. They will grow scapes that should be cut off before it blooms, so the plant will focus on root growth. You can eat the scapes 🙂
    4. Do add flowers. It makes an enormous difference for the health of your garden in every way.

Don't be discouraged by the view counts on the Mexican videos. You've spent years growing an audience who come to watch vegan recipes being cooked. The new content has some crossover, but it's fundamentally appealing to a different type of audience that you haven't yet cultivated. If Justin Bieber suddenly started singing opera, some people would watch, but a lot wouldn't care because they don't associate him with that style of music 😀

I live in Sebastopol, California and we have moles, voles, and gophers throughout the area. You need to have hardware cloth beneath the beds…which is actually heavy duty wire that will last for years. We plant everything in gopher baskets throughout the yard and it keeps all the critters away from the roots. Hope this helps.

What I was thinking as well!
In a garden like this, it could be put in bed at a time, when it's time to replant - maybe a on frames that slip inside the finished beds? And one at a time - needs where there's disturbance first.

Moles dislike plants with strong smells, such as daffodils, marigolds, and anything in the allium family. Another option is moles don’t like disruptive areas usually. purchase a sonic spike from your local home and garden store and insert it into the ground in your garden. This spike will use electronic pulses to create irritating sounds that encourage the moles to go elsewhere. I’ve used both these methods individually and together, I prefer doing both together.

I always plant marigolds around my plants, many pests don't like the smell, and they are beautiful, also add pollinator friendly plants, like milkweed, or brightly colored plants to attract bees. We also put in bird feeders to attract small birds, that eat pest insects and attract larger birds, like owls, that also eat moles. Promote the ecosystem and it will reduce the mole population.

The garden is looking righteous, Gaz. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with moles or voles that much. I would think that installing metal mesh under the raised beds would be the only way to control them. Just be thankful you guys don’t have ground hogs.

    • @vintagelife5195
      @vintagelife5195 Рік тому +2

I was gonna say the same thing. At the end of the season you can use it as a chance to check your beds for grubs and dig out the whole bed and staple in hardware cloth. Same with the paths, if its possible to scoop out the rock, or just going on top of that rock. From dirt or the current rock layer, first hardware cloth, then weed barrier, then the rock. Its alot of work, but will be a permanent fix. I have the same problem and when we start the garden here. Ill be installing all of that. If all thats too much, you can hire rat terrier guys in some countries. They bring the dog and dig em up.

We live in Connecticut and have moles/ gophers. We also put mesh under our beds but we also use gopher stakes. They come from Amazon. They are solar powered and beep and shake every minute or so. When we arrive at our property each spring ( we live in California in the cold months) the ground is all humped up. As soon as we put the stakes out they disappear from the yard. We push the lawn back and no more gophers. Get a few and give them a try. I loved your Mexican videos. Well done.

Try milpa (it's originally from Mexico) - planting corn, squash & beans together; they love growing next to each other (that's why they're also called the holy trinity or the garden's three sisters)! And regarding cardboard for your compost: Only use those without any prints/ink/labels - you don't want that in your soil and food. I love the garden content; keep it coming!

Here in the US we have an underused body of volunteers who give free advice to home gardners, affiliated with our state university cooperative extension. Find out ifyou have something similar to you.
Meantime, if they are moles, they won't eat your crops. They will eat lots iof bugs that will damage your crops. So they can be helpful. Trouble is their mounds can spoil the landscape.
Gophers will damage everything you grow.
You can try natural deterrents. Castor seed oil granules won't harm them, it will just make them leave. You will need repeat applications.
I have not found electronic deterrents effective. They get used to them, and come back.
The most effective control is to dig up the entire area, six inches deeo, line the entire area with quarter inch hardware cloth, add the soil back, and make sure the cloth extends at least twelve inches from the bottom to above the soil line to keep them from jumping over and tunneling. Six inches above the soil line for moles and gophers, and up to two feet if you have rabbits, who are also nocturnal. Rabbits make plants vanish from above, gophers from below.
If you have deer, you will need eight foot mesh fencing.
Good luck! I have an acre in the middle of the California foothills, and I say the same as you. They have acres and acres to eat from, they need to leave my food alone!!!
(I do serve as a Master Gardener for my county).
    😊

You can put down 1/2 inch wire mesh under the beds to physically block moles/voles/gophers. You could also plant their favorite foods in the non-bed areas surrounding your garden. For example buy a few pounds of daikon radish seed (search for it as a cover crop) and spread that around. Definitely a help for the soil and pollinators as well.
That land is beautiful, are those oaks on the hills in the background? Looks so much like California!
Something you might like to consider, is hiring a permaculture designer for a consultation. They might be able to think of an even better solution for your ground critters, as well as many other things that could help you optimize your garden... or go as deep down the regenerative rabbit hole as you'd like! As they say "the problem is the solution".
For example, you don't have a slug problem, you have a food source for hungry ducks, therefore you only have a duck shortage!
Also if you want to learn how to create the BEST living soil to grow the most nutrient-dense, tasty food, may I suggest checking out the channel of the man who literally wrote the book on Regenerative Soil, Matt Powers: The Permaculture Student.

*I once stumbled upon wild garlic in a ditch. I learned that if you cut the tops off around that stage it forces all the energy into making fat bulbs instead of stalks. The top bulbs don't get that big, but still taste like garlic. You should cut back half and compare the two! Fun experiment.

castor oil, cayenne pepper, garlic, and red pepper - or plant flowers like daffodils and marigolds, which are natural mole deterrents.
#1 is casarol oil you can mix 3 parts to 1 part dish soap and spray over their tunnel’s.
Hope that helps you. Enjoy your videos so much!👍😊🙌🏼

Hey Gaz 😊 thanks for the tour ..you've got a beautiful kitchen garden👍 I too am growing loads of veg but in large pots as I don't have a garden but I do have a very large roof ( hope it doesn't cave in with all that weight 🤣)
There's a device you can buy that emits a low frequency sound that wards off moles (without hurting them )😊✌️

Hardware cloth:) The best mole/groundhog, underground, disrupter abatement advice we’ve received is something we call in the states is hardware cloth. Either 1/4 or 1/8 inch. We were told to place it underneath our raised beds to prevent critters from eating and destroying our raised veg gardens beds. It’s a rather expensive addition but worth is to protect our veg etc. I would expect it would also protect your gravel pathways. Way easier to add when first constructing a new bed but we’ll worth it either way for the resulting protection. Hope this helps. Really enjoying your garden and can’t wait to see your unique custom grill in action.

Picking lettuce leaves from the garden and eating in a meal, tastes delicious 😋 I have a tiny urban garden and grow everything in pots, currently pumpkins, tomatoes, blueberries, lettuces and herbs. I make compost and provide a home for the tiger slugs which protect my plants naturally from the other slugs and have a small water bowl which frogs have moved into and a pile of rocks which toads live in. Your garden is beautiful and inspiring and hopefully people will give it a go and realise that even if they live in a tiny terrace like me, or a flat you can still absolutely grow things to eat ☺

Guess some other people already wrote: Many people here put a metal grid or grating under their raised beds so moles (or voles) cant get up there. So maybe wait until winter and add this to your beds? Kind of annoying because youll need to remove all the soil.

  • @jenc8953
    @jenc8953 Рік тому

In order to deter moles, you will need to add hardware cloth underneath the raised beds. It will be a real pain to do, but it’s really the only way to stop them. You can also add a vertical element around the perimeter of your garden that is dug down into the ground. Planting plants that deter them can help, but the hardware cloth is the most effective.

Love your videos, Gaz, and that you've got starts from Huw and Charles! ❤
MOLEs: you can gradually put hardware cloth under beds when you're ready to replant. Perhaps on frames that fit inside the existing beds, pegged at the corners.
    - did you know they can eat a cup of earthworms a day? My mother-in law studied our native (Pacific NW) earthworms, and kept a mole for awhile one summer!
CORN - as corn is wind pollinated, it's ideal to separate blocks of varieties in different areas around your garden! That way you can grow heritage, sweet corn, popcorn ... but separate them!
NASTURTIUM - you can also grow a variety with Edible tubers - OCA! Like yacon (dahlia relative) it hails from the Andes - and all parts are Edible.
B-12 - consider getting that in a sublingual form, which dissolves under the tongue like homeopathy - and hence goes directly into the bloodstream. From food, it's absorbed in our small intestine rather than the stomach, so this delivery more closely mimics the natural process!
As you say, B-12 is important for vegans and vegetarians, and also as we age and absorption lowers. I eat plant strong with limited animal protein, and began taking B-12 in my 30s after a bout of bursitis (thanks to Dr Jonathan Wright's nutritional wisdom!)

Amazing videos🥰🥰 tip for the mole issue: do research on what they prefer to eat and the environment they like and plant a special mole garden just for them in a different part of the garden. Preferably away from the veggies.
Moles are essential for good and healthy soil as they help control pests, aerate the soil and help to bring beneficial nutrients out from deep the soil. Moles can be your friend if you give them what they need and perhaps if they still make a mess in the gravel bed- remove the gravel and replace it with mulch or put wire mesh on the ground and cover it with gravel.

I'm a little late, but I'm just going to throw this out there:
Do what you want, Gaz (and team). The classic "follow your heart".
Whatever type of content you may move on from, there will always be someone else to fill that space. It wouldn't be the same as Avant-Garde Vegan, but someone else's unique contribution, and people can get their fix for that kind of content there.
There will always be people that enjoy what you do, whichever way you go. So please, follow your heart, your own interests.
Personally, I'm here for whatever you have to offer. I find all of it valuable, and I'm sure you've already seen by this comment section that you have a dedicated fanbase.

I'm sorry to hear that the Mexico videos didn't do well. I honestly think they are your best videos yet and I was really looking forward to watching more :(
As for the moles, my dad sticks some thin metal bars in the ground (he doesn't have raised beds though) and puts an empty plastic bottle, upside down, on each bar so that the wind makes the bottles rattle which in turn makes the bars vibrate. These vibrations seem to keep the moles away.

Hold on I got a solution for the moles! It’s some work but you won’t regret it… Take the soil out of your garden beds and on the bottom put a small hatch metal fencing or panel at the bottom and staple it to the bottom of your actual wooden garden beds. It’ll keep those boogers out! Absolutely beautiful garden and kitchen Gaz!
