I saw Benard's sidecar race today (3/31/18) at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in CA, 50 miles East of Blyth North of I10. Had to leave early and his race was the last race of the day so I don't know how he did. Beautiful aero body & paint. Come out to the car & motorcycle track every weekend except Summer.
WOW Bernard is NO JOKE! Why so many thumbs down? Anything involving metal work should be an instant thumbs up on top of the fact its in Jay's own garage!
Great to see the project coming along. Bernard is a pleasure to watch on the track in his approach to sidecar racing and his fabrication ability is right on par with his driving skills. Will be great to see this new bike in his teams hands and on the track.
A) Jay, you're the he only (above) major "celebrity" who is a real person B) Bernard's ponytail is coming along well C) thanks for the Bday present to your show in Nashville
Love this kind of content - thanks! (of course it could be longer, but it is what it is) Always nice to see Bernard back in the camera teaching us about what all he's building.
Wow what a project. TIG is just an acronym for what type of welding this is. Heliarc comes from when helium was used to shield the arc, where now argon is widely used.
I got to ride on a formula sidecar in Daytona and it was absolutely amazingly terrifying. Good luck Jay/Bernard. Also, if ya ever need help at the Garage, feel free to tell me to move to California. I need more of a motorcycle friendly climate anyway. Riding in Georgia year round can get interesting.
Not too long of a segment to give us too much info. Mr Leno's friend and co-worker is a talented and extremely knowledgeable person. I'm sure he's glad to have him there, to help him with all his vehicles.
I remember reading years ago in a motorcycle magazine about a sidecar rig that was build something along these lines. It caused a controversy; at the time sidecar rigs were pretty conventional. But it was within the rule specifications, so they let it race for one season, I think. It won most of those races, and as I recall they changed the rules so it could no longer compete. They called it a three-wheeled sports car, and said it had an unfair advantage. I guess the rules have relaxed since then?
If i remember right Heliarc is an older term for TIG welding or a TIG machine, when TIG was becoming popular the term Heliarc was closer to a brand name (like coca-cola). A lot of people from a generation or two ago use this term synonymous with TIG. Even if they aren't using helium for their gas.
why do we need to watch this with a vpn in the UK..anyplace steel stopped being state of the art long time ago, in the UK bonded alloy Monocoque is how its done
For some reason when this came out they would load it up to be seen in Canada. Don't know why, there's plenty of sidecar racers in Canada. I rather watch sidecar racing than plain motorcycles racing.
How do I learn how to weld and fabricate? Is there schools? I went to a community college to take a few automotive mechanic courses but I never saw anything like this. If anyone has some advice it'd be greatly appreciated. Fantastic video, I love episodes when his mechanic is on, he always gives great explanations.
Look for a technical school. Here in Minneapolis we have a combination community college and technical school with all kinds of trades represented. An excellent school. It's right downtown.
See, that's nice jay.. guy works for you, gets to use your shop to build his dream machine too, I like it.. more on this please. P.s. im a paint and body guy and I wanna race hill climb lol
He should be checking out the new 2015 supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2R if he`s looking for real power .....300hp. BMW is about to be dethroned BIGTIME!
Sidehackin' is the thing to do and it doesn't hurt to have a low IQ When you're on your sidehack make sure you don't slip or you'll end up with five metal pins in your hip
I fail see how anything about this is formula 1. This construction technique and materials was derived pre WW2 with tube and fabric airplanes. If you want stiff and light construction, use carbon fiber, then it would be like Formula 1.
Madddddie is so cute and fun and I have a lot of the day I have to go to sleep in my room for improvement of my life and death of the day before the end of the year of my favourite thing to say it is a yay for the day before I have no better than this is not the CD-ROM and I don't think that I can get it right away with the same thing to say I have a good days of my friends are so cute I can't even see you soon enough for you and your a fan since I got to you in a while ago but the best thing ever is a great way of the day before the game is a great day to

Nice to see Jay's shop. I worked in a tool and die shop once, and learned how to use all the shop tools there as a toolmaker's assistant. Lots of fun.
Bernard is an ace driver, fabricator, and mechanic. This man has unbelievable skills and talent. I enjoy his cameos in Jay's videos.
A) Jay, you're the he only (above) major "celebrity" who is a real person

Jay for a few days this video was blocked in my country, but it is now available.
Go Bernard - you're the man. :D
This thing looks awesome. Shame it's only 3 minutes.
thats what she said
Just finished an Auto Technology program and just signed up for a Degree in welding. Look forward to doing projects like this in the future.
Yup, it's back awhile... Bernard is great to watch, loved your sidecar outing too. Nice combo of tech and fun 👍
Wow what a project.
TIG is just an acronym for what type of welding this is. Heliarc comes from when helium was used to shield the arc, where now argon is widely used.
the frame will be something to see once its all brazed. looking forward to it
Agreed. It'd be killer to have that garage at my disposal. Jay is a smart/lucky guy.
thanks for opening it up so we can watch it in UK.look forward to more,I am sure Bernard will win a race soon.
I love this type of video, hands on building, cutting and welding. More like this Jay!!
I love that welding table . That shop. the tools. I would get lost in there. and stay very happy.
If you're gonna build a sidecar for Mr. Leno, you might want to use reinforced double trusses.
Apparently not available in the UK
Or Canada?
I can't wait to see more. A couple welding lessons would be great too.
Post more fabrication videos like this
"Video not available in your country"
Yep same for me dude, not available in England
Sucks for you.
I couldn't watch it in Germany either, but I used Proxtube, that's an extension for Firefox, do you have something like that for your country?
jospi2 I'm sure we do. Thanks for the help, I'll check it out there. Still a bit strange that we can't watch in Europe (possibly) though?
It was really traumatic, I had to spend 5 seconds turning on my VPN.
It is utterly pointless restricting content by region.
Not too long of a segment to give us too much info. Mr Leno's friend and co-worker is a talented and extremely knowledgeable person. I'm sure he's glad to have him there, to help him with all his vehicles.
Im interested to see other videos on this
Thanks for taking off the region lock btw
Why this video are not available at any country?
I find that a rougher does a good job at fishmouthing without the chatter. I like to do an end-cut plunge instead of slot into the metal.
That chatter set my teeth on edge lol. Such a bad noise to a machinist
Many thanks !!
Bernard, why
braze instead of fully weld?
I'm watching it in the UK.....no problem.
Jay's got a milling machine. How about a video on that beauty?
This is going to be a cool series!
Oh for those machines, fishmouth machines, tubing hack machines. If I had half those machines, I could really make something.
I remember reading years ago in a motorcycle magazine about a sidecar rig that was build something along these lines. It caused a controversy; at the time sidecar rigs were pretty conventional. This races in entirely separate events. Sidecar is its own racing against only Sidecars. No two wheelers involved at all.
Nick Hanscome Yes, I realize that. Not sure what I said to make you think I didn't?
I would love to see more episodes like this.
Make this video available in the UK!!!!!!!
Is there any updates on this yet??
Why braze the frame together vs. Mig or even Tig welding it together? Could there be some real benefit to going old school?
I'd like to see more video's with Benard.
hope there are more parts to this....
I hope there will be a continuation on this I am interested in the brazing process He is going to use.
Its called TIG welding. Idk where the heliarc name came from exactly
Helium is the inert gas used
1939, heliarc. 1976 tig. 2000 to present day GTAW.
He might be using helium gas instead of tungsten?
851995STARGATE
Tungsten is the metal electrode in the torch used to create the arc. Argon is a common gas used in tig welding.
Nice feature Jay!
Keep us updated.
bernard videos are my favorite
Video not available in England.
Jay, when are you going to review the 2015 C7 corvette ZO6?
Great Bernard. Let us know how it turns out. :)
Not available in Korea? Come on Jay.
hello Bernard, from john morello, your former glass man from san jose, Campbell glass. shameless plug !

P.s. im a paint and body guy and I wanna race hill climb lol
Woah. A welder with bare hands is scary. I don't know anything about it though haha
When you're doing fine work with a gas shield, there's very little spatter.
Cool! Good to know haha
Cool. And remember, if outlaw bikers are the 1 percenters then Sidecarists are the .01 percenters...
Jay
I want to c more electric cars & motorcycles
I can't wait to see what Leno does with a Model S P85D.
Very cool!
A sidecar frame like the one Craig sold to the firedept. Zoom zoom zoom.
Whew, put some coolant on that cutter
Dont get that ponytail caught in a machine!
Why did he go with a steel frame an not aluminum or carbon fiber if he was building a state of the art frame?
Hey jay we can't see this in the uk !!!
can now.
pull a micheal jordan and make a come back Mr.leno
I've heard you might have a tv deal going on again but when you can't watch it cause it's geo blocked. It's a bit of a kick to the teeth
coooool!!!!
Please put some safety glasses on Bernard! We want to keep you around...
He's wearing them. He wears glasses, you can get prescription glasses that are also safety glasses.
"Not available in your country."

Не хорошо джей(
cretins racing - what an unfortunate name
;)
No wonder Americans never win anything...he needs to look at Shelbournes, LCRs and Windles.
