And it's times like these that MM endears himself to fans. I'm not a Dream Theater fan, but I've listened to enough of his music and watched more than enough of his lessons to know that he's a rare talent and a genuinely good guy.
Wow people. "He's no Buddy, He's no Portnoy, he's no Peart". No Kidding!! It's Mike Mangini never having claimed to be or play like anybody but, Mike Mangini. As a few of the others have said, if you can prove why he's "terrible", "talentless", "a hack", and if you're better than he is.... please... humor us and show us evidence in video form. If you haters are musicians, true musicians, you wouldn't be saying any of this nonsense rather be praising another one of the drumming greats that we're all blessed to look up to and aspire to be....great in our own regards.
Without a doubt the most annoying comments ever are bound to be found around here... "He has no feel" "He has no groove" "Hes too mechanical" Good lord it is ridiculous.
+Alex I don't even know where people get off to be honest, he's got a lot of groove. He's humble, he has chops, he's got taste, and he's a great guy. If someone were to argue the "no groove" opinion on someone like Thomas Lang, sure I get that but Mike? No
Usually not a fan of his playing, but when he plays stuff that's simpler like a single stroke roll you can't deny his skill, those speeds are incredible, and I find it almost meditative the way he's playing.
first OFF - thanks to ALL for watching the VIDEO...i just would like to SAY that I PERSONALLY asked MIKE to play a DRUM ROLL because it was a GRAND OPENING and a DRUM ROLL to CELEBRATE is a GREAT THING. We all value Mike in the first place for HIS AMAZING AND UNIQUE MUSICALITY! i have had the priviledge to have him as a colleague at Berklee College...He Inspired so many (Students and Faculty alike)....As far as the SOUND: it was not the snare but the camera quality that affected the VIDEO.THANKS
easy to notice hes a match grip player, cuz he can keep up the right hand with his trad. grip, if u look closely, at high speed his right hand converts to finger but the left one has got the fingers too weak and its all radius rotation, so hes unable to go faster and builds tension as he said. Anyway hell of a player, and a wonderful guy wish him the best
Shades of 5th Grade in the School Street elementary gym in Waltham, MA first hearing Walter Tokarczyk doing the same routine, which inspired me to take up the drums. After a while I realized I was not musically inclined, but now at 60 play the bagpipes. I don’t know Mike, but know we had the same drum teacher way back in the day.
Haha, that first time was so sloppy when he went faster, it's great! 1:30 "Sticks are hitting my jacket..." I love seeing the humanity and fun-ness of the usually mechanically perfect Mangini.
In fact the first roll was a sublime example of dividing the basic tempo (kept with his left foot) into all kinds of metrum increasing the pace. In the second one he just pushed the gaspedal.
You can’t argue with technique and you don’t often see it in drummers who have their roots in thrash drumming. That’s a reference to when he was a member of Annihilator.
However, where Buddy succeeds where Mangini has yet to, is efficiency of technique. This video is a perfect demonstration because as Mike gets into the quicker tempos, his arms tense up and you can see him physically struggling to maintain the speed. Buddy, because of his more focus on what we call Moeller technique, didn't have this problem. They're both great, but Buddy's technique at high speeds is better able to sustain. Tension is always the enemy of controlled speed...always.
He is the drummer of "Dream theater" and if you dont know who they are I suggest you look them up. They are pretty damn famous so you should have heard of them if you listen to rock or metal music. Someone asked him to play fast in the crowd it wasnt something he choose to do to show off.
Lol @ Mike congratulating the people. "Congratulations, that's the best I can do." It's as if he congratulated them for being able to witness his roll.
i can't agree with "Mike could do anything Rich has done". Buddy Rich was a pioneer of drumming and IMO one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. Mike is one of the best drummers who live now, yet he can't be compared with Buddy.
Im using American grip but I can see the an feel the allure of traditional grip mr mangini..if your out there..if your listening..im that one student..that one individual that a band can and will be built on...I have it in my veins..I just didn't find it till now..im going to do what no other drummer has done in history and im going to create a world renowned rock band based on a drummer thats 40 years old...im inviting you to be a part of it..up to you..im going to do it no matter what..but I'd like you personally to be my teacher..thats it..
He's playing fast because he held (does he still hold it?) Guinness' record as the fastest drummer. And as our friend @pepparmostheelder said, he's the drummer of Dream Theater. Pretty big and famous band.
I'm so sick of drummers comparing this drummer to that drummer. Because most drummers are humble enough to realize that not one size fits all. Mangini is a monster player. Dynamic, creative, a student of the instrument with knowledge to spare - kind of like Micky hart in that sense. Just an encyclopedia of the instrument. the only drummer who could possibly make me listen to a band like Dream Theater (no offense to them or their fans) just to see what he brought to that table. I'm pleased he's back on his own doing his own thing. His wrist and hand speed reminds me of Buddy Rich in that they are able to generate that power. I wish I could do that.
Awesome. Dave Weckel does an incredible single stroke roll as well, it would be interesting to see them go toe to toe (or stick to stick) PS I know all you Mangini fans are going to have a few words...let 'em fly!!
"it's the best i can do"? His left hand can do faster than that...And faster than those big mouths who said mike mangini is overrated. You have to be somebody first before you talk sh!t about people
I know, right? Everyone who can do far less, always has the biggest mouth; when they could be getting better, instead. Those who do, do...And, those who can't talk!😅
The snare sounds like the one used in St. Anger XD
yeah it does. i really didnt like the snare in St. Anger!
@@jamesspooner1.2.76pretty sure no one does

2. Don't tend to be sure for everyone

100% agree
somebody answer that snare cuz its ringing

His polyrhtym blew my mind
Mike Mangini is easily in the "world's best" category and anyone who says otherwise has NO IDEA what they are talking about.
Nobody is like Mangini. His playing goes beyond understanding
Mike is one of the nicest guys in rock
like a helicopter
Such a steady, consistent speed up. Crazy Mangini
Mike Mangini in your store, at grand opening, it doesn't get any better than this. Awesome. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the invite.
mike have a metronome in his left foot
Usually not a fan of his playing, but when he plays stuff that's simpler like a single stroke roll you can't deny his skill, those speeds are incredible, and I find it almost meditative the way he's playing.
Personally I'm just impressed by the fact that when he got such a high speed he was critical of it and tried to do it better.

Mike Manginiis such a cool guy! Great drummer. One of my biggest influences on my drumming and speed drumming.
he's a real talent, love this kind of music
So good he is
Agree with you, Yoda does!
Awesome skills!! 😎🥁
A ultra fast single stroke roll is the most difficult technique
Love Mike! Amazing drummer & an awesome human being.

Mike is the fastest and a great creative drummer aswell as a really nice guy
:)
HUGE smile!
Thank you so much for sending me this vid: I love watching Mike play!
And I wish you much success.

my favourite drummer! would love to meet him in person!
Crazy!! He is so relaxed and tension free, beauty hair to boot.
Not only is he incredible musician. what a nice man

only love for mike...also,from the brief camera travel, the store looks really cool...!
In fact the first roll was a sublime example of dividing the basic tempo (kept with his left foot) into all kinds of metrum increasing the pace. In the second one he just pushed the gaspedal.
Mangini has more talent than he can use.
a wonderfully slow and methodical accelerando
awesome stick technique
??? Mike is one of the most accomplished drummers/percussionists to date!
I wish our drummer could just play a snare and impress people. He can go twice as fast and still people would be like, "Is that all?"
different audience then
if he could go twice as fast as mangini i think he’d get some attention
Mike at one time held the world record for fastest single strokes, so I think your claim is false.
@@Nmdixon-cu7vm yeah it would sound like an A10 if someone could double Mangini...
@@Nmdixon-cu7vm seriously ? How about buddy rich and dick? Mangini is the sweet guy but in single stroke he non.
The snare sounds like CustomGrow420
BUddy Rich's accelerando is magical and will never be duplicated. Then there's thomas Lang's creative take on it incorporating the bass drums.
Personally, I'm neither a Rock, Metal or Death core/Blast beat fan, but holy HELL that was quick!
Incredible!!!
CONGRATSSSSS!
Mike is a great guy with a beautiful soul. Im so happy that you could have him be part of event!
