Big concrete driveway in the hot sun, shorthanded, tempers fly!

  • This video captures the raw emotion and pure exhaustion of a stressful concrete pour, shorthanded on a hot day. Every concrete guy has been there and it's not fun. Share your stories down in the comments. I'm sure there are a ton on them.
The day we poured concrete started off like every other day. Until I got the exact text message that I didn't want, which set everyone including myself in a very bad mood. Tempers were flying and exhaustion set in quick. It was one of those days where you just can't drink enough water even if you try. We were all cramping up but we survived. As I state in the video, every concrete season is a war, every concrete pour is a battle. Unfortunately one of my workers lost his job today.

Exactly, the most successful companies are the ones that are in the trenches with their people. They have a pulse on what’s going on. There’s a guy I knew back in the day who owned about 20 different restaurants. At the end of the night at some of the ones he was at he’d be on his hands and knees scrubbing the floors with his workers. You’d never even know he owned everything.

Man your work is really done well. You must have some of the Gumba blood in yah! Italian here. Seriously i began construction at the age of 14 yrs. hauled the shingles up a ladder ( no transport belt back then) I’m 68 now. I’ve participated from the ground up, the basement pour to the finishing work. Bricklaying arched fireplaces with the self made curved brace and hand spit keystone piece. Your attention to detail, planning and efficiency of motion style is admirable. The way you drive your crew by pulling not pushing them what makes you a good person to work for. The way you dig in and set the example by working as hard as your fellas is a lost art these days. Your guys all seem dedicated and good people and you give them chance to learn a trade on the job and a good dollar. If I hadn’t retired I’d fill in for your no shows, Mi here, love the snow.

I loved the looks when I was just an employee, working a Saturday job, and brought my sons.
First time I had my boys on site with a new boss, he rolled his eyes but didn’t say anything as he watched my boys getting the tools laid out. Then halfway thru a drive, he notices my younger son (maybe 9 yrs old then), working edges, go down to the fresh pour to scoop some crete to fix a low edge.
He stops the pour to yell at his regular guys as to why my young son pays more attention to detail than his experienced staff.
15 yrs later that same son is on a job (he works masonry but there was a concrete slab they were doing). When some supervisor starts to question him about what he’s doing, and the concrete truck driver stops the supervisor and says ‘Dont you know who his dad is?’, and adds ‘Tristan (my son) has been on pours for years. Him and his brother poured most of Niverville (a small town 1200 home development) with his dads company.’
My son got a raise! Lol.
Major shoulder surgery forced me to sell out and retire. But as hard as the job was, there was no other way to live.
‘Concrete, it’s not just a job, it’s a way of life!’
