@@chair12454we had the same style in dc (we now have new gates at most stations) and when I was in preschool we were young enough we didn’t have to pay so when we were on a field trip we all lined up and crawled under.
The real problem is BART. They allow the fare evaders who then create other problems.

Do it the way it's done at SFO International Airport.. TSA / U S Border Agent takes every fare and scan every one of them. Then have travellers go through X RAY Screening; such as its done at the Airports.

No. We need to change the society not the system... in japan, korea, china, hk, Singapore they have same type of gates and people are not skipping fares even those with less capital than these suckers. In japan, even gates are left open in rush hour. Solution? Capital punishment for trivial violations like fare evasion, jaywalking or littering...

There are 600 gates, and bart runs from 5am to midnight, and no security in the Bay Area is going to work full time for 50k, let alone BART police. Do the math before proposing your "easy solution".

This is very dangerous. My mother is very frail at 85, but rides BART. She would be killed or injured if these "leaves" hit her in the head. Ridiculous. Things should be carefully considered before being implemented. So they stick a "camera" to "monitor rider safety"????!!!!!! So she gets banged in the head, then they get around to calling 911. Very sensible.

Heres an idea, when I was a kid I took trips to Japan and at the train stations they would post station employees at each individual entrance gate and stamp and clip your ticket. Could you imagine

Many years ago I complained to a BART driver. Nice easy complaint. He called the BART cops. BART customer relations has always been lousy and I've been a rider since 1972. It's a screwball system beginning with their non-standard tracks.

you mean the full-height, HEET, Iron Maiden or Roto-Gate? Yes, those are impossible to "jump" through.
It looks like if you're in a wheelchair, those wedges can crush your head. So the station is like "it might turn a paraplegic's head into an omelette, but that's a price we're willing to pay in the pursuit of profit!"
BART aka purge train is the equivalent of the liquid that collects in the bottom of an apartment or Asian restaurant dumpster.

Cameras have deterred some people, but not all of them. I would recommend the police and/or fare inspectors or investigators to keep eyes on the fare controls.

Its illegal to jump the turnstile yet you won't get fined or arrested for it. . . .so its legal. Paying is just a suggestion.
yea have a police or guard stay by the gate to issue ticket whenever evasion happen, it should be cheaper than these double stacked and maintenance
I would recommend transit police and fare inspectors be employed in the rapid transit and bus systems. They would be most effective in dealing with the riding public.
Maybe have heavy glass panels that slide out of the way if the person is allowed to pass. Montreal used to have these at "automatic" (unstaffed) entrances, until we overhauled our system and switched from magnetic passes to chip cards. Those old gates could NOT be climbed over NOR limboed under.

Why don't they just put a door that unlocks each customer on the entrance side with a bar handle, and a safety exit push style release on the exit side. Then for a handicap entrance a automic door.

How about military officers with machine guns before and after the gate how about implementing that new system to stop people from jumping and not paying the fare instead of decriminalizing and no longer arresting people when they jump the turnstile

Just hire an officer to work the gates every day. That costs like $100k a year for their salary. If they’re losing $25 million a year, $100k-$200k a year to stop the problem is nothing. Maybe start arresting people who do this, book them, write them a summons and a fine, then release them ROR. If you do that for a year or less, people might stop this shit. Ridiculous they’ve been letting this go on for so long.
What they need to do is make the gates more longer so people don't get in. More force on the gates and put cameras on the gates to monitor all the people using clipper cards or using tickets.
Another waste of cold hard cash. Now bike riders are going to have to go around all that.
This is futile with those gates. Just use an electrified barb wire metal gate. 😏

They should definitely start with solving the Authorized personell gate. That has "walk on thru" written all over it. It guarantees that even the fattest, least athletic, least motivated people can just walk thru because no one is there to stop them.

You are so right. I hope they are not dumb enough to put these in the rest of the stations. Listen to what the people are saying. Very hazardous. Some poor disabled person or elderly person is going to get smacked but good, when those "leaves" smack em in the head.

@@IGtyi39AL78F56 I wrote to BART and they wrote me back saying there had been no injuries reported yet!!!!!! How dumb can yuh get? No injuries reported yet, like we're a bunch of guinea pigs. I can tell you, for a fact, the minute, my 84 year old mother goes to BART those leaves are going to scare the living daylights out of her, plus any other elderly or disabled person. Even an able bodied person feels the need to scurry thru before getting potentially beheaded.
