I'm wanting to buy a new camping/hiking/survival knife, kind of an all around knife, would this fit the bill for you or do you view this as more of just a survival knife?

Just saw they had the 5.1 go on pre order, I'm sure they'll have some left over when they make a new batch, I bought the cru forge 4.7 since they had it in Stock, can't wait to get it

Cerberus Elmax has no flex or lateral strength. I think it would make a terrible survival knife because you really can't abuse it. Edge retention is great and stainless steel is excellent but it is not good for prying or batoning

Here in Europe it is almost impossible to get one of those. I was lucky to get one a year ago (the old 5.1) and I absolutely love it. Usually I prefer smaller knives but the 5.1 is fantastic. It is my no.1 choice for my survival kit and therefore I chose the CPM3V version.

  • @SCQT

Have wanted one of their blades for years, and ended up ordering a 5.1 in Magnacut yesterday. Look forward to getting it out and abusing it.
The 8.0 also interests me, but i do kind of wish it was 7in... At some point im just taking the Skrama. The 5.1 seemed like a better representation of the company.
    Thanks for the look

Don’t give your money to survive knives ! I bought a Gso6 in June 2017 , paid $250 for it, it’s now March 2021 and I still havn’t received my knife and after refusing a refund I had to file a complaint with the Better business bureau , which Btw survive knives has a D+ rating with!

When I first orderd survive knives I got knives with rounded spines and did not know that I needed to order the notch. Now I will have the opposite problem , I will have notches that I dont need on the 5.1 and prob the 4.7 that I ordered

Great looking knife with quality materials and sheath. One problem though.....I don't have one yet! That tip strength is impressive. I usually cringe when I see a knife being bent over when pulling it out of wood, but that steel can take it, so can cpm 3v. Thanks a bunch for showing it to us.

    Hey Marine,
I have the utmost respect for you, and I appreciate your time, as I watch all of your videos, and have gleaned some great information from them.
That being said...the knife is very nice looking, and pretty, but just like the Army paratroopers, I'm not sure it can really fight! LOL
I did the math on this one, and it looks like a lot ($229) for a knife, when compared to many other knives that will basically perform the same, or better.
This is not a criticism, as I would love to own the knife, but us (former Navy Special Warfare) guys on a budget will have to stick with knives from SOG, Condor, CRKT, Cold Steel, Mora, KA-BAR, and Schrade until we are a little richer!
Thanks for your time, and have a great day!

I love my 5.1 and the new one looks like it has only improved on what was already a great knife. I put a 90 degree spine on my 5.1 so its good to see that this new one has it already put on it. Out of interest in your opinion has the angle of the cutting edge changed at all or is it the same as your old 5 5.1?
Thanks and wishing you a Happy Christmas! a.t.b. vee

The GSO knives always look great, unfortunately out of my price range but finally someone is making a sort of competing blade of a more budget variety with the Schrade SCHF 52.

    • @BlackScoutSurvival
      @BlackScoutSurvival  8 років тому

I don't know if the appropriate word to use is competing. May be a similar style but materials, ergonomics, sharpness which make a knife good or bad are on two completely different scales. I've broken schrades. Never a Survive

  • @southerncross100

I would love to repeat the tip strength test shown at the start with seasoned Aussie hardwood that wasn't lying on the ground, 'cause the cross batoning shown immediately after had the same tree (possibly a type of conifer with moss at the base) in the background and both the baton & side branch that was being cross batonned was obviously rotten and IMO no test at all of the ruggedness of a knife. LOL
IMO any knife that has jimping on the spine immediately next to the handle is a joke because this is the very spot that the thumb of the knife hand can be used to increase the pressure on the blade at the most efficient area for pressure cutting (i.e. close to the handle). This section needs to be rounded rather than be made rougher.
Sorry ex-marine, but an essential bushcraft / survival skill that is rarely mentioned on youtube is the ability to see what you are looking at. And what I saw didn't impress me.
    Mick

Thank you for the video. I was looking for one like it. I just received the new production GSO 5.1 CPM-20CV and another one in CPM-3V. How you compare the CPM-20CV to the 3V and other steels? Do you believe it is a good choice for a knife of this size? I am just worried about the toughness but many sources revealed that the toughness is close to 440C SS which is not bad but not as tough as 3V. What I am trying to know is that do you believe the knife is tough enough batoning thick hard wood like 5160 and 3V steels?

+Van Lurton I'm wondering this as well. Cant decide what would be better. The 20cv seems to stand up to everything. What more does it need to do? With the less of a need for maintenance I'm thinking 20cv is just fine.

+Matt A I have a bunch of S!Ks and I believe 3v is the way to go. It's tougher, stays sharper longer and is about the same to sharpen. Yes 3v will stain but it doesn't really pit. Check out the Survive! Knives youtube channel. Guy did a video or two about 3v and how it holds up in the wet.

+Mr81alpo I already have the gso necker 2 , and pre-ordered 3.5 cpm 20cv , 4.1 cpm3v , gso 7/7 cpm3v and I will grab the 5.1 as soon as they will send me e-mail . Honestly , of you already ordered the 6 , I wouldn't bother the 5.1 , as basically the 6 it's the 5.1 without the finger choil and just 1 inch longer cutting edge , but anyway , if you are a knife freak like me you will have all the models soon . Probably the best increment is 3.5 , 4.1 , 5.1 , ( 7/7 or 8) and 10 , at least for me so I won't order the 6 or 8 as I have the 7/7 already ordered . Good luck with the knife .

Do you still like the GSO 7/7? Or do you prefer the 5.1 over the 7/7?

I don't know why people made a big deal about using the back end of a knife to strike a ferro rod because I've always just used the blade itself trust me if ur cold or hungry you'll use the blade plus most ferro rods come with a striking tool so just use the blade because ur not going to ruin the blade sorry ur not i've used Tops knives and especially survive gso knife and I've never ruined a knife edge NEVER !!!!

I have waited 7 months for mine. Am I being fooled? Did I just give $240 plus to a company that is going to skip the country?
