Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V is a good budget option for comparison. Can be had for between $90 and $120 USD, depending on seller and timing. Shorter blade, slightly thicker at the edge, but can be thinned out (it's 3V) to be very slicey. Also doesn't have an exposed tang and the rubber handle is less durable than G-10, but will definitely do just about anything else the GSO can. Also has a DLC coating which is better than the bead blast.

Outstanding and comprehensive review as always! The older I get, the smaller and more importantly thinner my blade preferences tend to get. Maybe it has something to do with being more comfortable in understanding how much abuse a knife steel will actually take, but I think it has more to do with just not wanting to carry anything that is hard to use to actually slice with or use......I carry a knive now for the other 99.9999 percent of the time when I'm not in a survival situation ;). Of course, as a wise reviewer said " different grinds for different kinds".
Cool to see you using a variety of sharpening systems throughout your videos. Now you're on the tsprof!! I'll have to upgrade to one of those eventually
Spot on review, Pete. They are great knives and a superb value at the original price. They are too hard to obtain: If Survive! could figure out how to maintain this level of quality and value and deliver in a more timely fashion, they'd take over the knife world. I guess the old axiom of 'cheap, fast, good -- pick two' is correct. It seems that Survive! chooses cheap (in the sense of not overpriced) and good, and sacrifices fast. If you want one faster, you can try the secondary market ... and pay much more. The handle scales on the 4.7 are, in my opinion, the best around. I wish every knife had these ergonomics ... it is so comfortable in the hand. It is even better than the most recent 5.1, which was awfully good. They are an improvement on the earlier models (like that 4.1) which had a much straighter handle shape.
Interesting that the Woksharp and Lansky cut tests yielded similar results. I read somewhere about Cruwear (which is 3.5V ish) taking a toothy or polished edge and performing well. As opposed to the high vanadium Steels where toothy does much better. I could be way off But that convex edge performance is particularly encouraging.
Don’t give your money to survive knives ! I bought a Gso6 in June 2017 , paid $250 for it, it’s now March 2021 and I still havn’t received my knife and after refusing a refund I had to file a complaint with the Better business bureau , which Btw survive knives has a D+ rating with!
I really don't understand their logic. They build some of the best quality knives of that category, if not THE best. However, they ask to pay full price BEFORE, you get the knife and in the same time, you have to wait 5 years at least??? That being said, TRC knives , make a similar knife with even better materials and overall quality, at similar price BUT you don't have to wait! I speak about the Mille Cuori (What a knife!!!) You simply pay and you have it! IMO they make the best fixed blade knives at the moment.
@@greekveteran2715 TRC knives suck compared to gso or Carothers. It’s really not even close. Hence why people are willing to put up with the bullshit gso pulls. The delta heat treat is unrivaled.
I ordered a GSO 6 several years ago and after a year and a half requested and got a refund because they hadn't even started making them. Incredibly, they still haven't got them done , in about 4 years .
Exactly what is going on we the public don't know. 3 years after the order for the GSO 5.1 and they haven't even ordered the steel yet. They got the boot from Blade Forums for holding a business that doesn't live up to their standards I suppose.
15:25 I have a Benchmade Field sharpener. It's my go-to sharpener now that I've moved and ghaven't set up my Smith's kit again yet. Actually, I may not bother with the Smith's because I pretty much destroyed the original stones when I reprofiled that MT-5. The Benchade Field is way bigger than that stone though, so may not suit some lightweight hiking officianados.
Lol love it my friend!! I wanted a GSO for ever I had one but then got rid of it for some God offal reason Idk why!!! It was a blue and Black G10 and I think I wanted a micarta and just never had the funds since 😢
Yeah hey Pete great video. I have been waiting on my survive gso 4.1 for 2 years now I will never buy from them again I read the other comments. Looks like I am in total agreement with some other people about SURVIVE! Not having there production level together correctly therefore I will never ever order another from them. I canceled an order from 3 years ago that I never got and they have an excuse every single time I call why it's not done. Ive t spoke directly to Guy. While being very respectful and pleasant over the phone he dodged a lot of questions and I am a knife nut.....
Love my Survive! Knives! Wait time does suck, but product is 2nd to none. I currently have the new spec 5.1, old spec GSO 10, old spec 3.5 (all in 3v)and old spec 4.1 (this one in m390, though I used limited run s90v for years till I traded it to a collector for the one I have now)
6 minutes in and I think I could really like this knife. The only problem is that it might just sit around doing nothing while I beat on the MT-5. But then again, the MT-5 could get retired if I bought one of these. EDIT: After reading the pinned comment my MT-5 could well be worn out before one of these arrived!
I received the Architect 6.5 in Magnacut today. I have to say, it looks like a true apocalypse knife. It's better than the trc apocalypse and better than the gso
Always good content, I'm thinking of getting one of their knives, $400 Australian delivered is around the ballpark for the one we're looking at. They call it a stonewash finish. Certainly seem like quality and decent pricing from GSO Survive knives. 👍
If you do order from them it will be years before you see it. They have no intention of fulfilling orders. There are outstanding orders from 2016 and they are not going to finish them by making them. They say canceled orders are fulfilled orders.
It is the perfect size for me but I don't want to wait so might go with the Cudeman MT5 , I know the steel is not quite as good but still more than adequate for my needs and I can have it now.
good review, i just pre ordered one in cru forge v. one note however, cpm 3v is quite a bit tougher than those stainless steels, esp with that heat treat
totally fair call. I think its 20CV but yeah, would definitley be a good get and may have done the same if I had the option from my buddies Survive Stash!
Red rum1 trust me you wouldn't be disappointed by either choice they're both amazing. I've had my gso 5 in 3v for around 5 years now and I've had 0 rust form, not even a patina. Not sure how that's possible cuz I don't baby it at all.
I received the Architect 6.5 in Magnacut today. I have to say, it looks like a true apocalypse knife. It's better than the trc apocalypse and better than the gso. And Architect got it to me in 1 week of ordering it, and it's a bit cheaper than the gso 5.1. Tell surviveknives to cancel your order and get the Architect 6.5 in magnacut. You'll like it more than the gso
Would love to get that knife, but I'm not willing to pay for a knife and wait 3-4+ years. I picked up a barely used Benchmade 162 for $100. and like it. I like the handle shape but have found I'm in the minority there. As well, the sheath is so-so.
Survive just got their forum shut down on BladeForums due to their bad business practices. The general belief is that they've been selling correctly manufactured knives as factory 2nds so they can generate new revenue instead of fulfilling prepaid orders.
They told me my knife was finished two years ago yet they sold like 10 batches of the 7/7. I don't trust them. I had to cancel my order. There are people waiting three years for their knives and now their draw a concept knife and so you can upgrade to that knife for an additional cost and wait many more years for it to be produced
Survive Knives is no longer a company. Guy shut Survive down, and did a liquidation sale of everything related to the company. That sucks in two ways. Most important is the people who will definitely never get their knives now. We also lost another American manufacturer. One more American company gone. As much hate as Guy gets he deserves but the man can make one hell of a knife. I’ve owned & tested several.
When I talk about field sharpen-ability I usually refer to like sharpening with a flat stone you got out of a creek somewhere and using tree bark as a strop, because that`s the most "field like" you can get. While this might fall under "survival fantasy" I still think it`s valuable to have the ability to sharpen your knife that way because a DC4 can break or get lost. That`s where my opinion comes from that something like 3V or S35VN is a bad survival knife steel, and I would much prefer lower end steels like 12c27, 1095, etc. in my survival knife, maybe something like M390 (havn`t sharpened that yet, how bad is it?). There`s definitily a bit of a disagreement in the "survival community" about steel choice, I just happen to be of the old style "you have to be able to do everything with just stuff you find on the ground" mentality xD
Because 3v will hold a good edge for about 3 weeks, but if you just strop it regularly it will hold it far longer! And realistically a survival type situation will most likely not last that long, if it occured at all
Yes, I agree with the statement that in a short term survival/wrol situation a supersteel like 3V would probably perform better than a more standard steel. This is what I meant with the disagreement in the "survival community". "Long term situation believers" say they want the old school steels for field maintainability, it`s a difference in outlook really.
I could manage that I reckon! I still use the tormek for most quick edges. The lansky mainly for tests. Ive been trying to be a cool guy and just strop everything lately though
They didn't do the cool US military vehicle thing with the stars and stripes in reverse on one side so it streams back as the knife travels forward. I guess it is a knife not a helicopter. Although I have seen one knife at least with this detail, can't remember what brand it was though.
@@TheGfhicks I sold three of my GSO knives (that are bascially unused shelf queens) on Ebay for $1,200 to buy top of the line Dewalt Table and 12" sliding miter saws... which look way more cool and actually get used. Now in retrospect it was absurd to have 3 slabs of BASICALLY just simple machined small slabs of steel when I could have entire garage full of Shop saws. There is nothing special about these knives to even remotely justify the price much less the wait. Basically just mass produced single piece of steel. Big freaken deal..
bp69 i didn't say that it wasn't tough at all...it has some toughness. But when a knife is advertised as a survival knife, it must be able handle almost ANYTHING, m390 will simply not stand up to that kind of abuse..no need to get offended. When i'm talking about toughness i mean: hold up to prying, breaching, throwing, batonning seasoned max span hardwood, hitting rocks etc etc. I'm not trying to trash talk M390, it is a good steel! But for a survival knife steel, there are better steels out there
smilodon bushcraft and outdoor there are better steels out there for survival in terms of toughness but m390 and 20cv has stood up to everything I’ve thrown at it in my lionsteel m4 it is a smaller knife but I’ve done some abuse to that thing and it’s never chipped or anything
yeah. I think so. Its a little more useable out the box, about the same price, and the steel is a touch better. The T5 is definitely a favorite if I was in the market for something a little sexier
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors yes I think the looks are great for something similar. Prices in uk are not so aligned here though. T5 comes in a bit cheaper. Keep up the good work, you run a great channel.
Good review! These are great knives but the companies' business model is flawed in so many ways, which for me is a reason not to buy them. Kinda sad since these were my introduction to a higher quality of knives than I'd been using before then. But I just can't bring myself to support a company that operates the way they do and I suspect it won't be too long before they go out of business altogether. Cheers!
They are 3 years and growing to deliver knives they took 100% money for up front. They don't sell knives anymore. The question isn't "if" it's when they will go out of business.
GSO stands for Guy Seiferd Original, just FYI... Also, on the GSO Handle/Scales - the handle is not 'ruff' or 'unfinished', it is actually machined micro-textured, a process that adds an extra step to finishing the scales. Again, and I gave you this advice before, go register on Bladeforums and start reading. You have a lot to learn... good thing is that you're a smart guy and can learn fast. But only if you want to...
X DD thanks for helping this poor guys out. It's amazing to me that UA-cam reviewers who do this as a major hobby or even career can't be bothered to take just a little time to research what they're broadcasting to a large audience. Poor form on their part.
This company is terrible... I placed an order, and it took 2 + years to be delivered. I was stupid enough to place another order and give them a second chance, and I deeply regret it. I am still waiting after 1.5 years. They always have an excuse. It is a scam 😒
bp69 holding up well. Concerned with the sheath-being very tight. It may were out the rubber. But good so far. Only have had it a couple months ,it is the Italian model
Now the 4 year wait on the 7/7 is still ongoing. The GSO 5.1 that took place in May 2016 has not even started. To anyone that ordered a 2nd you are really getting the 1st order from someone else then they make the people that preordered wait even longer. Who has a whole year of 2nd sales but not one 1st ordered delivered? They just took orders again on all the cancelled orders that were placed so they say. They tried to introduce a new line of knives even though they had already done that with the new SK line. I can't do business with someone who lies about everything. Nobody from Jan 2016 has received their knife in under 2.5 years and that was only if you were lucky or knew somebody. Fanboys will get their pound of steel for beating down others when they never order yet they keep getting a knife in record time without being a preorder or presale or starter order. They can't finish two models in 4 years and they got a dozen of them out there. The ones that ordered the SK line were suppose to get them in 8 months but 3 years later they have not started.
Unfortunately i own several of these knives and after discovering way better steel I'm going to sell them all.. great design for sure but sharpening this steel is a nightmare .. A2 or D2 zero issues sharpening cpmv3 is garbage IMHO
Weird. I’ve learn to sharpen on cheap wet stones. My second good knife i’ve ever sharpened is a BRK aurora in cpm 3v. I’ve never found it a nightmare to sharpen. It’s actually not that bad at all! Maybe you just need to practice a little more? Or change your method?
How did you get one? (Oh from your friend ) I would never support this company. They lied to many people. I have friends who own this knife and the quality is top notch but the performance is jack of all trades master of none. They do not use their survive knives. The best alternative is Carothers Knives. Trust me , do not “pre order” anything from them. Don’t promote them please.
Not a great company just a scam business that's taking peoples money and not making knifes. I have been waiting over 4 years and get nothing but lies like a lot of other people.
Whispy Woods spear point, dull bead blast, dull micarta, dull sabre grind. Not really a relevant criticism for a survival knife. Not meant to be pretty. It's supposed to be versatile & durable. But at least say a falkniven or even srk has a clip point. Just personal taste. I'm sure it works fine
Honestly, what is the point of even reviewing the 4.7? You can't actually buy these knives.. you have to try to find them on a secondary (like ebay) market to pay inflated prices.
High tex knive .but will peform better than 1095 highcarbon.steel.or 1428 sanvick.steelless. i trust my life to the great moras in the sky 200$ not cheape.
Damn really wanted to like this video, you clearly put a lot of time into it, but you just had so much wrong information. Spending 5 minutes on their website or 15 minutes watching a a review from someone who knows what they're talking about would have helped you out tremendously.
apart from the names of a couple of things, what was wrong? Would like a list of things. Not even kidding. I’ll put them in a correction video. I guess I figured if the review contained the measurements, dimensions and my experiences with the knife and the thoughts I had after then tbat would make for an enjoyable, useful review. But yeah, the specifics of things, particulalry terms, definitely elude me, sometimes. I guess I always put more work into the actual use, such as testing the steel three ways, sharpening and whatnot. I’ve seen you as a commentor before, I know you don’t mean too badly but I’ve had a couple folks come at me in emails about this, all generally focussed on me saying its ‘rough micarta’ instead of the finished correct name (although it does feel rough...?), and saying ‘Guy Seiferd Ordinance’ instead of ‘Guy Seiferd Original.’ Sure, its annoying hearing someone say the wrong thing from a position of instruction, but im also thinking, its not like i got the steel wrong, or didnt show it can baton or get resharpened in the field, or incorrectly say the Micarta is G10 or whatever. and kinda don’t get the issues some folks have had. I shoot pretty loose takes, focus more on the practical use in most of my reviews. I know I get heaps of things wrong in terms of nomenclature. I guess the fanbase of these knives takes those things a bit more seriously. The reaction is definitely different than usual. Then the people with the super negative stories jumping on me for giving the knife a good review when they have some weird business model. Its just not been fun at all.
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors you're right. I'm getting a little too worked up over these details. This should be fun and if it's not, then what's the point of trying to create a community? From my stand point I felt I knew more of the fine points from very minimal effort online. I thought you would have wanted to be sure on your points before presenting the video to the public, but like you said the major points and real use was on point. The knives do not come with leather drop loops, but rather a kydex G clip. Guy takes a lot of pride in his factory edges, I'm surprised your experience was so underwhelming. Some other were corrected by others. There's a lot of hate circling around the company, sorry you attracted some of the negative attention. Sorry to come at you from the other direction. Can I blame it on a bad day at work?
A factory edge is for idiot who's going to chops a tree (13.10). This coming from a guy who broke the tip of a Bark River knife by baton.... is ironic. Where's the lanyard hole? I don't wrap the lanyard around my wrist. I use s shorter lanyard and wrap it at my pinky finger and uses a loose 2 finger and thumb grip. I convert my 4 inch bushcraft knife into a 5.5 inch. Not for heavy chopping, but too lazy to grab a Parang to de limb a brunch.

A becker with custom scales feels just as nice.. and you wont be supporting a ponzi scam by buying one...
@@pubplays368 Guy decided to abandon the Delta protocol...
Guy is now blaming the Delta heat treatment for his delay’s in delivery.
Check out the Architect series by The Knife Connection. Same 3V, same heat treat (peters heat treat), very similar design, and half the price.
@@TheGfhicks I was just glad to get a refund and be done with them !
I still regret trading my 4.7 cfv away. Great knives! Hard to come by though.
Yep, sold mine 2 months ago.
Great review . I ordered a gso 7/7 year and half ago still waiting .
I ordered one three years ago
I wonder how well a spyderco doublestuff 1 or 2 would do vs the falknieven stones
Love my Survive! Knives! Wait time does suck, but product is 2nd to none. I currently have the new spec 5.1, old spec GSO 10, old spec 3.5 (all in 3v)and old spec 4.1 (this one in m390, though I used limited run s90v for years till I traded it to a collector for the one I have now)
I just invented self sharpening steel!
I call it S3.
Now, all i have to do is to actually make it.
Adamantium works better look at wolverine he never had to sharpen his claws never having to sharpen something is better then a self sharpening blade
bp69
Perhaps.
But Wolverine is a SJW.
And that's ...........problematic!
It already exists, it's called an utility knife.
@@TheGfhicks thanks for the reply mate
It is the perfect size for me but I don't want to wait so might go with the Cudeman MT5 , I know the steel is not quite as good but still more than adequate for my needs and I can have it now.
good review, i just pre ordered one in cru forge v. one note however, cpm 3v is quite a bit tougher than those stainless steels, esp with that heat treat
Really like the micarta and shape of that handle. Would probably choose M390 over 3V personally.
totally fair call.
Have you looked at the Master Hunter in 3v? Looks good value
Tony Canniffe he did 2 reviews on it
bp69 Cheers.
Looks like a Gough custom knife. Aussie fella out of Canada.
Well it takes 3 to 4 years to get one but they r worth the money
How would you compare this knife to Bradford Guardian 4.5 3v or perhaps White River Firecraft 4”?
#SurviveBacklogCrew still waiting for GSO 5.1 Magnacut or any other option! Almost 2 years Guy!!!
5:12 What is that weird pitter pattery sound? Reminds me of something, something I've heard before long ago.
EDnaut sounds like a washing machine
Nice review video. I think your reviews are way more comprehensive than others. Would you place this knife in your top 10? And if not, why?
Would love to get that knife, but I'm not willing to pay for a knife and wait 3-4+ years. I picked up a barely used Benchmade 162 for $100. and like it. I like the handle shape but have found I'm in the minority there. As well, the sheath is so-so.
I ordered the 6 3 years ago. Still waiting on it.
Survive just got their forum shut down on BladeForums due to their bad business practices. The general belief is that they've been selling correctly manufactured knives as factory 2nds so they can generate new revenue instead of fulfilling prepaid orders.
wow, that is a bombshell if true!
Green G-10 handles, ya! Me like it!
Nice review. TY
Where did you get the dangler attachment?
Guy Seifert original I think anyways. GSO
3v (when ground into a convex) is an excellent survival knife steel
Did you actually read my comment?
Because 3v will hold a good edge for about 3 weeks, but if you just strop it regularly it will hold it far longer! And realistically a survival type situation will most likely not last that long, if it occured at all
Yes, I agree with the statement that in a short term survival/wrol situation a supersteel like 3V would probably perform better than a more standard steel. This is what I meant with the disagreement in the "survival community". "Long term situation believers" say they want the old school steels for field maintainability, it`s a difference in outlook really.
I havent tried to rock sharpen a steel yet, might be an idea for a video soon
Are u finding that you aren’t using your tormek as much now u have the lansky? What would u pick if u could only have one?
Would be interested in the edge retention difference between a fresh tormek edge vs a fresh lanskey edge
EDnaut Kershaw link or dividend, don't remember which
Yes, looks like both, on the handles. That would have been where I saw it. I thought it might have been the CRKT Homefront, seemed fitting, but no.
EDnaut That's because the GSO is mainly used for draw cutting rather than stabbing, so the flag is flying correctly.
Hmm, I can't argue that logic
The just got booted off Bladeforums for over year backlog of knives that where paid for up front.
3 years.. get your facts lined up.
Sorry, 3 years..
The backlog is three and a half years now
@@TheGfhicks I sold three of my GSO knives (that are bascially unused shelf queens) on Ebay for $1,200 to buy top of the line Dewalt Table and 12" sliding miter saws... which look way more cool and actually get used.
Update the. Backlog is 7 years
This reminds me of a LionSteel M5 or T5 except this has a better steel.. The LionSteel might be more reliably tougher….
I need there gso 5.1 in 20cv looks like it would be a great knife
bp69 20cv is not tough enough for survival knife use. For cutting it would be great
smilodon bushcraft and outdoor have you seen literally any of guys torture tests on m390 and 20cv 20cv is plenty tough idk what you’re talking about
bp69 yeah it is pretty tough, not near as tough as the 3v but it's still plenty tough for camp chores and such.
bp69 i didn't say that it wasn't tough at all...it has some toughness.
What about a cold steel master hunter in 3v
Bro did u get that stripey top from millers lol
I delivered to 2 apartments in different suburbs that were '305'. Just sayin'... details man, details... LOL
It kinda looks like a fixed blade version of the cold steel 4-max
Dont buy DLT tradings kydex sheaths for the BR bravos. They dull the knife to butter knife dull. Dont wast ur money
Better than the lionsteel t5?
yeah.
Steve Baby thanks man!
Steve Baby for usability absolutely better.
When you consider that you'll be paying for a knife that actually exists with Lionsteel...
Cheers!
Me too.. and I own eight of them! But the company is dishonest.
storm3016 if they've hung around this long I highly highly doubt they'll go out of business.
It is a scam 😒
cold steel master hunter is my 3v knife this seems a little over built in comparison for its intended use
thoughts on comparison anyone
Dan Michell how is your master hunter holding up long term I had 1 for like 3 weeks before my friend bought it from me
bp69 holding up well. Concerned with the sheath-being very tight. It may were out the rubber. But good so far. Only have had it a couple months ,it is the Italian model
dan michell Italian model?
Yes Italian. Mine is not black!
Master hunter Made
In Italy
Kefart
I have been waiting over 4 years.
Can I have it???
Crap I thought GSO stands for go survive outside
Howard green honestly that is a way better acronym
bp69 not really. That is dumb. The owner and designer putting his name on it makes more sense than a random tacticool bushcraft phrase.
Unfortunately i own several of these knives and after discovering way better steel I'm going to sell them all.. great design for sure but sharpening this steel is a nightmare .. A2 or D2 zero issues sharpening cpmv3 is garbage IMHO
LOL
(Oh from your friend )
I would never support this company. They lied to many people. I have friends who own this knife and the quality is top notch but the performance is jack of all trades master of none. They do not use their survive knives.
The best alternative is Carothers Knives. Trust me , do not “pre order” anything from them. Don’t promote them please.
There's plenty of happy owners of their knives. Just saying. Sorry you suck.
I have 8 that I bought off secondary market, blah blah, love them!
Michael StJohn best way to get them haha bird in the hand is worth....
I have 8 in the hand...
Carother's are so far beyond s!k that calling them an 'alternative' is an insult.
Great Company!,Great Product!
Not a great company just a scam business that's taking peoples money and not making knifes. I have been waiting over 4 years and get nothing but lies like a lot of other people.
@@kev1147zxcvbn Sorry to hear that, i live in the UK and ordered a gso3.5 in 3v and got it within 2 weeks, but it was a few years ago.
Possibly the most boring knife on the planet but I'm sure it will do the job
Adam Smythe how is it boring? What in your opinion is an exciting looking knife?
Whispy Woods spear point, dull bead blast, dull micarta, dull sabre grind. Not really a relevant criticism for a survival knife. Not meant to be pretty. It's supposed to be versatile & durable. But at least say a falkniven or even srk has a clip point. Just personal taste. I'm sure it works fine
Honestly, what is the point of even reviewing the 4.7? You can't actually buy these knives.. you have to try to find them on a secondary (like ebay) market to pay inflated prices.
Have you owned one?
Yes, I do own one, and newer model.. with microtextured finish.. back when they were doing the weekly sale.
Lousy music choice
I disagree!
It has a lanyard hole, just look.
Do not support this company.
