One thing that hasn't been mentioned. They are doing this song in a MINOR key! That is what changed this song from a happy, cheerful song to a haunting, depressing dirge. All the other comments are spot on too. Great harmonies and simple, rolling banjo. Good stuff. Thanks for posting this.
As it should be given the content of the lyrics. I don't honestly remember hearing the actual lyrics of the song when I was a kid, just the chorus. It's definitely a song that's meant to be played and sung in a Minor key. It really is a depressing song when you think about it. Major keys won't be able to give you that feeling of desperation that the lyrics are conveying like a Minor key.
My favorites are The Recap (because I knew so many of these guys in college and since I've moved on, I wonder every once in a while how they are) and Achilles, two that others haven't suggested. Enjoy!
The next song is their cover of the Doors' "People are Strange." About this song, if I was the object of their affection, I woudl definitely think of moving far, far away. Just thinking from a woman's point of view.
The song was used as a campaign theme song for Davis's successful run for Louisiana gov in 1944. He often played and sang at his campaign stops. Although he ran as a segregationist he also played duets with black bluesman named Buddy Woods including some raunchy double entendre blues (Red nightgown blues, Tom cat and pussy blues) Give them a listen. By all accounts he was very popular mainline country singer, dirty blues raconteur and a very competent administrator in his roll as governor. Quite the package.
Burt Byler, you should listen to this version of You Are My Sunshine, its the most haunting and also Shooter Jennings: ua-cam.com/video/fo_szHx1_no/v-deo.html
What’s the next The Dead South song I should check out?
Hard to go wrong with Banjo Oddessy or the Massacre of El Kuroke. Two of my favorites.
Honey you. It has such a great flow and feel.
Black lung or bastard son
Banjo Odysee for sure! And after that Black Lung and Boots
Broken Cowboy, or Gunslinger's Glory.

In Hell I'm In Good Company. I think is my favorite the video is infectious you can't help but do the steps yourself.
This is the song that caught me initially. But you really need to do a bit of background on the song, what the story its.
They have a great video producer and sound mixer. It really displays the singers talents.
The dead south rarely misses
Written by Chas. Mitchell and Jimmy Davis. Recorded first by Davis in 1940.
Thanks for that info Peter!
