What's the next Dead South tune I should check out? Thanks for watching y'all!
Love their cover of House of the Rising Sun!
They are all amazing tunes but my personal favorite is diamond ring. Give that one a listen.
Travelin Man!!!
Banjo Odyssey
Broken Cowboy or The Recap are both great tunes
There from Regina Saskatchewan canada 🇨🇦 these guys blew my mind the first time I heard them love there style and music
The Dead South are based in Southern Saskatchewan. This province has quite a few towns and villages with direction-ironic names like North Portal which is at the south border of Saskatchewan, Eastend which is in southwest Saskatchewan (but is at the east end of Cypruss Hills), Southend which is in northern Saskatchewan (located at the south end of Reindeer Lake), and West End which is in eastern Saskatchewan. The Dead South kind of carries this sense of ironic naming that is quite prevalent in the province.
Black Lung was written by John Curtis Ortiz. But lots of coal mining in Canada. Coal mining songs? Rita MacNeil's song 'Working Man' sung by her or by Matt Minglewood. The Men of the Deep sing it with Rita and in a tribute to Rita, Minglewood and the Men of the Deeps sing it. I can guarantee you'll cry. The song is from Cape Breton, Canada and is an international massive hit.
They are from Canada, but don't forget the song The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down was written by a Canadian and Brian Wilson never surfed in his life I believe
I don't car if they're from Antarctica or not, Southern Canada is fine. I saw these play in Newcastle , UK and they were absolutely brilliant. They have energy, guts, musicianship and wow, what a gig!
The second I first heard these guys I really felt a punk rock vibe in their bluegrass instruments, and it turns out they really talk about being influenced by punk rock. Their earlier stuff is a little wilder (and darker) than the new. From album “Good Company” the songs “Down that Road” and “Deep when the River’s High” are great and uniquely Dead South. Saw them live, and they rock with full gas the whole show!
Foot stomping’ joy !!
De echo el album Easy listening for jerks , la tapa del disco es como And Out Come the Wolves de Rancid
4:10 is a mandolin solo, if you listen you close you can here the banjo line in the background that’s why they weren’t focusing on the banjo player
Bluegrass originated in the Appalachians - West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia. Also most deep shaft coal mining took place in that area. Makes sense that a song about coal miners takes place in that area as well.
"Dark as a Dungeon" and "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" are my two miner classics
Check out "Coal" by Tyler Childers.
With the Dead South every song is an adventure.
In interview they said this song was given to them from another artist that wasn't singing it. They cleaned it up and made it theirs.
I fell in love with the Dead South the first time I heard them, such a unique sound. Don't care where they are from, or what they call themselves.
My favorite dead south song. Nice choice 👍🏼
I saw an interview with the band and they all have different backgrounds from punk to classical, one common thing that is similar bluegrass was something they gravitated to. What gets to me having been a tour guide or “docent” for a coal museum miners all agree is it’s a tough job mixed in with thank god another day done and I’m alive, black lung captures that common thread. Before black lung, would be Mr. Cash 16. Tonnes. Thanks for the review 😉
You have to check out their full concert live in Boston. It’s an incredible set with the first being diamond ring and they close it out with banjo odyssey. Nonstop perfect concert.
Burt, they from Saskatchewan,Can. You need to see them live! I have yet to see them, just amazing....Cheers
There is a good movie called Matewan (1987) based on a true incident about a 1920 confrontation between union organizers for coal miners, and the henchmen of the mine owners.
Loretta Lynn sings about her upbringing, "Coal Miner's Daughter". There is also a biopic about her life also titled Coal Miner's Daughter (1980).
Tennessee Ernie Ford sings "Dark as a Dungeon"
Dierks Bentley "Down In The Mine"
Jimmy Joe Lee "The Coal Miner Song"
Dewey Moore "Coal Miner"
Josh Addair "Daddy's Home"
i am from greece and a metalhead...but i love these guys
I was hooked the very first time I watched their 'In Hell I'll Be In Good Company' video. I'd like to suggest something a bit different for you to watch. 'Tennessee Whiskey' by an a capella group called VoicePlay. It is wonderful! Also, their bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, has a version of 'Shenandoah' which is just beautiful. In any case, I'm glad I found your channel. 🙂
I'm a HUGE fan, they are so, so talented- I don't know if this is 100% behind their name but THIS SONG literally has them telling us 'We are the Dead South' and at the concert I went to of theirs they told us "it's a pirate song." ..m.ua-cam.com/video/oMh2Slc06Yk/v-deo.html So, Canadians, doing American Bluegrass style, singing about a while bunch of everything, who consider themselves "pirates." They are just be the coolest... They purposefully go for a "telling the darker part of real life stories" and they have literally called themselves "something like Mumford n Son's evil twin."
Multiple singers also plays into the number of people in that mine.
Always Vibing, another great show Burt🤘🎶😊🌞🎻
Thanks Jo!
Totally agree. They're good because they're real gritty, and not in an "overproduced" way. It's raw. And it's addictive.
"Paradise" - John Prine, John Denver, Jamestown Revival etc.
Northern Alabama's got mines. Near Birmingham in Oak Grove.
Should check out their cover of you are my sunshine
I just love these guys ❤
Loved this❤
All countries have a south.
16 Tons.
Canada is a large exporter of coal ... so we know coal ... I think we're ranked 12th or so worldwide in exports. Difference though is our coal is hi-grade, anthrathite, which is used in manufacturing steel and is valued worldwide. The USA coal is generally bituminous which is low grade and best used for heating purposes. There is a huge difference!
This band is from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada
Another great Canadian band had three lead singers -- The Band.
They are from Saskatchewan....for sure. They are not "traditional bluegrass ".....but I like it👍
Other than the far left/right coasts, Canada is a lot like the American West. TDS are just an amazing band/musicians/artists, the new cover album has been great so far. I mean Chop Suey with a banjo..
Love this.
Recommend Daniel Ratliff and the Night Sweats. The song - SOB
Already got ya covered! ua-cam.com/video/e4t03-2rANE/v-deo.html
They are real! The best #(*%$&* show Ive seen in 20 years.
Miner’s Refrain by Gillian Welch
Yes!
You need to check out Goodnight Texas' song Jessy got trapped in a coal mine.
My favorite song about coal mines has to be coal town by Taylor ray Holbrook
Sting.."We work the black seam" everyone check it out.
Southern Canada near Montana had alot of southern families and confederates move there to get a new life
Canada produced 57 million tons of high grade coal in 2019 and exported roughly 36.5 million tons. Now I am not a supporter of high grade coal production but it has to come from somewhere and why not Canada I say. Our coal is the cleanest in the world.
Western Virginia is coal mining land. I’m in East Tennessee and we have a history from years past digging coal out of the mountains
All these fine young gentlemen hail from Regina, Saskatchewan. Neighbours & sometimes collaborators with Colter Wall ;)
Classmates (3 members) of my son's from Kindergarten to Grade 12 :)
There must be something special in the water up there!
@@SongwriterReacts Fresh air & clean livin' ;)
It was the direction they had to go in to tour the USA
Ya know Canada has a south too, right?
Damn straight!
Thank you for doing a song other than in hell i'll be in good company
Doesn't matter if the souther part of Canada is the south. They're from the northern part of Canada. Because of course they are.
You know how it goes when a bunch of guys get together and form a band, all kinds of “cool” band names get thrown around? Well that is all there was to it. One of the guys threw out The Dead Souths. Other guys liked it but didn’t like the “s” so they became The Dead South. Nothing more to it than that lol.
Most great names have a similar story haha. Thanks Jody!
@@SongwriterReacts somehow I envision them asking where they’re headed after high school and one replied, dead south out of cold ass Canada lol. If only there was a cool story like that lol. Btw you need to check out Angela Autumn “Dancer” on Gems. Think Bella White. She’s really good
That is my favourite coal mining song but coal-Tyler Childers
I don't think the USA is the only country with southern states/provinces.
Jesse got trapped in the coal mine. Good night Texas!
Big John and Coal Miners Daughter
Can people not sing fictitious songs about other regions? That’s basically what ballads are
Can you please react to 👉the lady of heaven trailer? The movie was shown in AMC Theaters in the US and it had a very long and successful run there. The next move is for it to be shown in Australia on the 28th of April and in Canada the following day. After the theater deals are finished it will have a worldwide release via movie streaming platforms ❤️☺️
