In this video we are taking a deep dive into building this DIY dining table. All you'll need is a sheet of plywood, some table legs, a circular saw, drill, and sander. This is a fairly simple DIY woodworking project, but I'm going to cover it thoroughly so that you have the best chance at a good result. We'll also cover a few options such as edge details, overall size and more.
The style of this video is a little different than our normal video. It's structured more like a very simplistic version of the video plans that we make and sell. Below is a link to a free, downloadable PDF with more instruction and dimensional drawings to supplement this video.

@@DavidGreen31I know this is a long time ago but if you were still interested in possibly just seeing a sample of their plans, I discovered tonight that if you go to the link for the legs, the leg manufacturer has a link to the pdf plans that can be downloaded. Kind of annoying when creators don’t maintain links for things they published as free but at least there is a workaround in this case.
@@inmyimage1081 Hey, thanks for replying. I did actually end up building this table back then. I will say that building it with a single sheet of ply, even with the fancy stretcher underneath, it noticeably bowed. If I were to build it again, I'd use two pieces of ply glued together, or build real stretchers underneath. Good luck, and thanks again.

As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
I really appreciate you guys offering a more DIY-friendly option for people like me who don't have as much experience with woodworking. This table looks like something I'd be much more wiling to try to tackle so thank you for this!

@@Foureyes.Furniture Are they formed and welded sheet metal? I'd like to try to make some.
A useful tool would be really easy to make right at the beginning of this project. When you are cleaning up the factory edge, put a piece of scrap ply against the straight edge you have clamped on. Now make the cut through both thicknesses. The resulting length of ply is exactly the same dimension as the offset of your saw. To use it, mark your sheet where you want to cut it, put straight edge on the board off set with your new spacer and clamp it down. Remove the spacer and make the cut. I have a spacer for both the wide and narrow sides of my saw.
I grew up with 70s furniture and you get super cool lines with Mediterranean and if course French Provincial! But I am so in love with Palmetto color!!! So sophisticated.
I like the Durand glasses better, they soften her face :)

I was wondering if you had thought about using metal for the longitudinal supports under the table? I have never made one of your designs, but you have influenced me in my design and build. Thanks MJ, appreciate it. I think a matching metal stretcher would be awesome. It's kind of outside of the scope of this project though, since the legs are pre-fab and can be purchased to fit any table. If semi-exact was to make a matching stretcher piece, I think it would just be too specific to one particular table size. The goal here was more modularity than a specific design.

I’m “semi” retired and I do a lot of custom metal work like making items such as those stretchers and designing pieces for folks who come in and say “can you make something to do this”? I’m thinking of fabricating similar legs, but having them enclosed fully. I’d also have a plate welded to the base to spread the load instead of your plywood plate. Well you got this Old Boy thinking. I really appreciate all the work you guys put in. Thanks

@@ilikewaffles3689 - Well in my shop, for the legs, all sides would be cut from steel sheet (maybe 14 gauge) then TIG or MIG welded to form a “box” structure. Then grind the welds smooth. Just like most things I make. For the apron you could use some C channel and weld a plate on the open side, if you wanted. For a support under the table it’s easy to router grooves to accept the legs of a C channel and screw or bolt the channel to the under side of the top. Maybe use 2 channels about 1/3 in from sides.
You son of a biscuit, I was trying to find an outdoor dining table I saw at Homegoods once but never found it again. Almost inspired myself to try and build something similar, but it had tapered legs at an angle, which would most definitely lead to utmost frustration.
Then comes Chris with this product that just happens to be exactly what I need. Now I'll have to order a few of these legs and ultimately run out of excuses for not building the damn table myself. You bastard.

Please tell your wife that those Landon frames look pretty smart. That table is really nice. I just built two work table/islands for my wife and her new business using that same top laminating technique but with a heavy bullnose round over on both the top and bottom. Came out wonderful.

Great video! Thanks for making it clear to not get too wrapped up in unnecessary details like what the big angle is on the belly support. The angle isn't important: just split the length, split the width and connect the dots.
Yup yup...lots of things in Woodworking are pretty arbitrary. The sooner people wrap their heads around that, the simpler things start to appear :)

Just a note: the double negative in “Neither this table, nor these legs were NOT designed for standing on” @4:36 coveys that they were designed for standing on.
Yeah...I didn't meant to write "not". It's one of those things where you write it one way, then delete it and write it another way...but leave a word. Oops. Unfortunately, changing it now is basically impossible...so I'll live with the double negative. How couldn't I not?

That is so nice and easy to do with just basic tools but I am still waiting for the actual project that I seen it in Shaun's fusion tutorial video or maybe a Shop Tour I know you has some organization to do and I hope it come soon.

They are definitely powder coated. I would look on Semi-Exact's website or inquire to see if they have info on that. I can't 100% say since I am not as familiar with the manufacturing process, testing, etc...as they would be.

I like this design, however I think I would order the legs in white, so that I can strip some of the paint, and then make a slim line steel frame to weld or bolt the legs to, this so that the table will have better strength!

I am wondering if adding glue to the belly/stretchers might help prevent sag. Also, I would imagine a square apron style "belly" (table under a table), rather than two free floating stretchers, might give more stability to prevent movement of the plywood over time. It could be built with the same tapered aesthetic as well.

I made this table with solid wood that I got for free on some fb group, that wood came from a wall shelf
I always felt faintly stupid for using my speed square to align my circular saw before I had a miter saw, but I feel better seeing someone else doing it lol
I would take a speed square and a circular saw for accuracy over a miter saw any day.
@@Foureyes.Furniture that’s true but I’ve dropped my circular saw a nonzero number of times - freewheeling saw blades are not my friend :’D
It’s still really useful for wide and long boards though.

4:07 I'm trying to figure out how you cut these pieces so that the plywood layers line up with the top piece. Given that those pieces underneath are not mitered at a 45° angle, wouldn't the end of the table look a bit odd at the corners and not like a 1.5" piece of Baltic birch?

8:27 You're not going to get 2" here since you're using the offcut. It'll be 2" minus your saw kerf. In the end I don't think this width is critical, but it's something people should be aware of.
Good call. Because the piece is the offcut in this instance. I think circ saws have about a 1/16th kerf...so should be ok :)

In the marine sector they be referred to as "floating frames" or "longitudinals"....

Where do you get 4 x 8 Baltic Birch? I've never seen anything other than 5 x 5.
All of the yards around here have it. Somebody once told me it's not technically baltic birch if it isn't 5x5...but it looks identical. Good enough for me.

If Layout instead of Illustrator and dimensioning in SketchUp is an alternative, TIG's Dual Dims plugin could be a useful tool to not exclude the rest of the world with the weird dimensions... ;-)
In all of our "for sale" plans we provide them in both (imperial and metric) the reason we didn't here is because we wanted to avoid having two documents. Honestly, the dimensions are so few here that it's easy enough for people to convert. With our regular plans it would be a pain, so we provide it.
