  • A GP38-2. An Alco shop switcher. Two RS-36s. An RS-3. All of these locomotives are important to the D&H’s history, and all of them have stories. This video is all about telling these tales, and answering the question of why I love the D&H.
Featuring Colin Buckowski, Dave Coppola, Bill Bibby, and the late Jim Lafayette.
Special thanks to Rudy Garbely/Garbely Publishing, Gordon Smith (‪@dhdisprsmith2296‬) and Michael Berry for allowing me to use their photos and videos in this film.
In celebration of 200 years since the incorporation of the Delaware & Hudson.
Filmed in Plattsburgh, North Creek, Corinth, and Cambridge, NY, between 2017 and 2022.

I had the pleasure of working for the DH from 1979-1986 - I started as a yard clerk in Oneonta NY but transferred to Albany NY to work in the new centralized crew dispatcher’s office with J.T Delano in 1981. During that time, I worked in Fort Edward - Saratoga- Mechanicville clerking on my days off. We even loaded VW vehicles at Kenwood Yard for a time.
When the representative from Guilford Transportation a Mr Maxwell said the DH was going to be reduced to a single iron railroad I could see the end of an era for the old road. We would become a branch and would eventually split the company up. Fitzgerald would take a day off and I would call the crews on the north end of the railroad. Great hard-working people like the Layfette’s and Carpenter’s to go to work in Whitehall NY. God Bless-

Nice video. D&H had one of tge best paint schemes around.
Used to see them run the Erie-Lackawanna line in Buffalo in the 70's.

I trout fished the Battenkill from my teens on. As a train nut, always “visited “ the Alco’s in Cambridge, where my Aunt/Uncle lived on 11 Avenue A. Cambridge was a wonderful place, including that Bakery on Main St, noted for its Fig stuffed cookies😂. I’m 75 now, living in Florida, great Seafood, great climate, but I always go Back every 5 years to fish and see the Alco’s, and the Mountains. Truely many memories here for me!

Great story that you have told, it's when rail fans get together, there is so much you can learn from the old rail vets, great job!

No matter how big they are-- todays RR's cannot even begin to approach the tenacity, variety, color, and uniqueness of the D&H. And,though he wasn't mentioned--- a special thank you to BRUCE STERZING--for his spirit in keeping the railroad going while all around him was bankrupt. May God rest his soul.

Besides the great work u did with video production...u captured the essence and heart of a people from your specific region...from places that very well exist due to the railroad...which could easily be applied to any region across America and beyond...the common thread connecting all regions being...The Railroad. Looking forward to more of ur work...

You're not alone with your love of the D&H. It's one of my absolute favorite Fallen Flags, and the Battenkill railroad is on my bucket list of shortlines to check out some day. And now, with 5015 in D&H colors, I want to get up there even more!
    Long live the D&H.

Absolutely one of the best presentations I’ve seen on this topic!
Growing up near the ex D&H Lacolle subdivision in Quebec, I immediately had a connection with the D&H. This video honestly shows that there’s a community that is with the D&H, we all love this railroad.
    Thank you.

Good video, being a railfan from Maine, I never really had alot of exposure to the D & H, it was always " the railroad to the West of the B&M " but through your videos, I'm learning more about it, and I can see how everyone has a love for it. I'm developing a love for it, although it won't overtake my love of the MEC or the BAR, it's becoming a new fascinating to me. Keep up the great videos, one of my favorite channels on UA-cam

The name Ken Karlewicz is a familiar one, I've had his great pictorial book on the Susquehanna since 1988, if you ever see a copy grab it, you won't be sorry!
