I think that Monica got caught up in a fantasy of any young girl. He was her prince charming and believed they would live happily ever after because of his lies. He was old enough and knew better but deliberately used and abused the poor girl, knowing that he had no intentions of anything beyond his own satisfaction, which he was good at getting with anyone he thought he could push around.
