I think the fact that NeurIPS is opening up for high school students tells more about the current ML paper landscape than anything else. I am quite sure I could have written half of these "oh look we prompted GPT-4" papers when I was in high school.

Well I think that's amazing. To do something useful in ML, you don't need to be a ML engineer anymore. With the current ecosystem, some python knowledge is enough to have an idea running and looking at r/localllamma some of the teenagers active there are more knowledgeable than a lot of researchers.

I'm a bit worried this high school track will turn into the "my parents are academics who will pull strings to get me a placement in an ML lab where I can get my name on a paper so I have a better shot at a top university" track. I hope that will turn out to be wrong and that we will see interesting papers from students invested in the topic, but for now I'm skeptical.

It’s exactly this. What fucking high school kid is thinking about NeurIPS or ML research? The answer is the same kidd that have already been getting groomed by their parents since age 0 for these opportunities. This is no different than rich get richer statement.

that seems to be the only way, independent research without any institution, but how do you make things at scale without expensive capital ? that's the problem.
if only we didn't have any paywalls like Nature, for example.
I think we really need a better system that's more open and less institutionalized, more like open source.
Who cares about what institution a person went, what matters is the merit of the paper they wrote.

What kind of highschooler is gonna get a paper in NeurIPS??? Even CS PhDs from good schools barely get a paper in this conference,even professors who have been publishing in all kinds of AI/ML conferences for the past 20 years don't get a paper inside of here easily.
I can already predict that the background of all these kids are gonna be parents having full time faculty publications at top CS/Math Schools,100% gonna be the case.
I can't even imagine any student submitting a paper to any CS conference in highschool,now submitting to probably the most competitive conference in the world? the kid better be the next terrence tao or something.
Also if a kid can get this paper accepted at such a prestigious conference,why would he even need to go to university? He already knows everything,even for ML research roles,your publication count and conferences carry the most weight.

Absolutely. I probably could have gotten a scholarship to one of these "elite" high schools, if I knew what they were about. Or done well in Regeneron STS, or so on and so forth. I even knew they existed, I just didn't understand why I should try. How would they benefit my life? I *did* do math competitions, but again, I didn't know what resources to look at, so I just solved competition problems over and over until I learned the concepts through chance. It got me to a pretty good university, and now my outlook has changed drastically. Learning math could have been so much easier if I knew where to look. And high school could have been much more fun if I had classmates more like me.

I think the high school student papers are an interesting experiment because they have not read many existing neurips papers nor can they read some (because they don't have the knowledge). It would be interesting to see someone who is not "conditioned" on existing papers come up with. Probably just crap, but still it is interesting. It might push us out of the local optima of academic research that we are stuck in.

The problem is not that rich kids will maybe be smart enough to write papers. The problem is that fighting against the Pareto principle is a fool's game.
The NeurIPS high school papers is an experiment worth running. It might confirm the idea that only connected or rich kids could submit good papers, it might surprise us with who submits and what is submitted, and it might even get enough attention on social media and regular media as to make not-connected, not-rich kids aware of and intrigued by ML. At the very least, letting high schoolers submit papers this year will give us better data points about high school and AI research. 🙂
12:40 After hearing your arguments Yannic,, I agree 100% with you. The bright children of rich and/or academic parents will be just fine, and will give their contributions. The ones who won't are the ones who won't be introduced to this, or have their ideas birthed, helped and fostered by their environment and finally helped to publish them. As you say, with finite resources, much, much more important to have THESE children put into environments which will do just that. Besides, this will just otherwise act as yet another factor to make academia even more unobtainable for children of non-rich families. It's almost given that there will be children who are NOT gifted or even interested in machine-learning, but who will be aided in their entry to college by their parents writing their papers for them throughout high-school, so that they will appear to be shoe-ins for university.
We think we're training AI, but in reality it's training us.

Yeah unfortunately, LLMs are still not usable for coding. As a novice coder, its impressive looking at the code that top tier LLMs GPT4 & llama 3 70b instruct immediately produce, but their code usually never works or are filled with errors and then go in infinite circles of wasting time trying to fix the errors🤦♂️
Sounds like you just don't know how to prompt the LLMs. I'm a software engineer and I use copilot + directly prompting LLMs every single day and it has made me at least 5x more productive.
Gemini tended to produce stuff with errors. Llama3 has been kind of amazing in that regard. Quite complex prompts get em turned into working code and when it failed it was often my fault.

Devin just makes some unspecified changes and fixes a few bugs, some of the bugs it introduced... IDK still sound like some of the software developers I have worked with.

I come from a poor background and I totally agree with your take. I had a lot of interest in STEM growing up but never had anyone really pour into me when in high school. Plus a lot of teachers didnt even know how to nurture a kid with those interests and because I was tall was constantly shamed by others for not being a jock.
I totally agree with you. Even after I got into a good college like UIUC, I did not get good mentorship in paper-writing.
I applied for PhD, and it is brutal... Top PhD programs now literally require you to have 4.0 GPA and a paper in top conference.
It's absolutely crazy right? Also i think GPA isn't a huge factor,one of my friends got into a top 10 CS PhD program and he got in was because of a first author NeurIPS paper with his advisor and also worked as a pre doctoral researcher in google which led to another ICML Paper.
Oh and his recommendations were literal director of researchers from top FAANG companies.
He had something like 3.1 GPA so conference carries the most weight followed by your advisor who can recommend you to the phD program.

I agree with so much of what your saying about neurex. Life circumstances certainly were not good for me, I pushed through a lot of it but with more favorable initial starting conditions I feel I could have gone further faster. For my kids I hope they can use the progress my partner and I have made to go even further.
There was a paper a few years back on how hard work while important isn't as important as luck. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I could see some over-educated math teacher and an AI club doing some cool stuff. Most of the 'writing' is about hitting the exact style that reviewers expect, and GPT will give them that.

Devin made me laugh. The hurricane of upset from code monkeys brightened my day. I have had many teams work for me that need a boot up the backside "1 sprint to make html button".

TBH it depends on the school. Polynomials, derivatives and matrices are things I was well familiar with thanks to my high school subjects. Now, tensors, fields, gradients and matrix multiplication weren't among those things but most of them were introduced on the first year of University and honestly any advanced high school student from our school could easily learn those thing on their own. The school I went to was a very good school with emphasis on natural sciences and math, but it was a public school and my parents were neither rich nor academics.
I use this example. I just implemented an in house affiliate program. It was upwards of two months of planning and implementation. If someone tried to tell me that Devin is going to be even close to being able to complete a task like that, it would be laughable. This is the average level of task that a dev team might work on. It's not even close, not even close to being able to take on a task like this.

Devin is never planning and implementing in house affiliate program from the ground up and everything associated with it, for a cross platform app like ours. You couldn't even get it to complete the most basic implementation of branch deep linking on a single platform and that's like 1/25th of the entire task done. Let alone all the context and and requirements that you'd have to document and hope it understands, and that's just for technical deep linking part. Then there's backend generation service, and frontend scripts for the non techies to be able to interact with them, and I know for a fact that testing branch on iOS alone is well, well outside the capabilities of Devin, not to mention it has no mobile development environment anyway. I could go on listing about 100 other things Devin couldn't do to complete this task but you get the point. Even saying "it takes several prompts" is just laughable. Clearly you're not a serious developer. And this is all without any bit of consideration for security and compliance protocols of a dev team. No serious company is just going to let Devin go at it on their hosted VMs. It's all just so ludicrous and a pipedream.

Regarding the "delve", I think everyone will eventually get to fine-tune a LLM with their own writing style, from their personal notes, talks, videos and... So the result LLM can write just like them. It's like a PLM, or Personalized Language Model!
You'd have to do it carefully, Western native Englisn speakers are terrible writers! They abuse words and phrases to make their text sound punchier, while simultaneously using weak passive voice instead of identifying the subject of an action: "hopefully this begs the question why the vast majority will be impacted..." gag me with a spoon! LLMs fine-tuned by these better-spoken Africans are much better writers. Their huge problem is an unwillingness to be brief. Instead of drowning in a sea of aimless clichéd hectoring writing, we'll drown in an ocean of well-written verbiage.
TLDR: use an LLM but prompt it "Brevity is the soul of wit. Be brief or I'll 'rm -rf your codebase'"
People are lazy so they don't even bother doing the minimum especially people publishing papers since they are usually slaves aka graduate students or worse tenured professors.
I side with you on the HS paper project. Your same argument could be extrapolated upon using the context of scholarships and grants in the college system in general in most countries.

Im not native english speaker. Large part of my "communication" in English was with chatgpt, and I definitely took some of its dialect. "To delve deeper" is a phrase I learned from it and already have used it once or twice. Maybe it's time to be more skeptical of chatgpt writing style. Cheers
Instead of investing in high-school students(which I remember trying to make Facebook using Javascript like only frontend). Instead find those like me that aren't in college but doing ai stuff on their own.
How do you know if someone is skilled if they haven't tried to learn it like the "rich" kids did. Do you just get the top math scorer? If you're in poor schools you also will have bad math education.

There is no lack of information about highschool-NEURIPS. That's not a real problem. I think there are a few amazing kids that will be able to do ML in high-school and we should support them. But it's not a matter of having lots of money or academic parents, it's about passion. Academic parents can't make their high-school kids NEURIPS stars unless they write their papers. I think it is cruel to downgrade to money or academic-parents the merit of having passion for ML. All these equity based reasoning patterns tend to ignore passion and hard work and just write it off as a happenstance of money or parenting. Indeed, personal interest and dedication are crucial and can lead exceptional young people to remarkable achievements.

In Ontario Canada public school over 20 years ago, I learned two different referencing systems (MLA and APA) as part of our essay writing, and we also wrote baby research papers (4-6 pages) in both physics and chemistry classes about laboratory exercise findings. The only real piece missing was how to conduct a decent literature review, which can be learned pretty easily now.
I don’t think you’re giving high-schoolers enough credit for what they might come up with. I hope you cover at least one of the submissions to this conference track.

With regards to your comment about NeuralPS about finding disadvantaged people with exceptional talent. Isn’t what they doing drawing them out? You talk about to instead redirect money to find these talents from disadvantaged families. Again, I agree and this is honourable thing to do but you fail to say HOW to do this? I came from a relatively poor family. We had no computer, no internet (at the time) but had a passion for tech. I learned to program (from libraries) before I could even could use or own a computer. At 13 I started busking to eventually pay for a computer. I eventually won (or came close) to winning some minor science/programming competitions. Looking back now, I’ve been in tech field professionally for 25 years and am sort of semi-retired now. Anyone with real passion will find a way. First step is awareness. The next is passion and those with passion will by and large find a way to fore fill this passion, especially with the free learning material out there today.
9:02 i disagree. I am a high school student from a "technical high school" (that is literally the name) and one of my teachers wants me to make a reaserch paper on some ml task. The high school itself is public, completely free. My parents are not academics (even though they have master degrees, but this is common in my country). I personally do not currently want to do this, but some of my friends are pursuing this avenue
Also regarding the cost of doing that reaserch, my county has a yearly grant program for projects from high schools. This can be used to fund anything that is accepted ti the program
Also my countries higher education system is mostly free so the last argument does not apply
The bigger issue here is that the megacorps are using this way of traning and brainwashing an army of young bots / future minions to advance this research, which is not necessarily a great thing to happen for humanity in the longer run, given the most prominent applications of AI (surveillance, censorship, military, suppressing freedoms... and oh yes, generating funny texts, sounds, pictures and fake videos [with which you can spread confusion, fabricate "evidence" and blackmail politicians really well]).
Unless a master's degree in your country means something completely different from what it does in the rest of the world, and your parents didn't attend college or university, you have parents with an academic background.
Also, are you sure your school doesn't have some socio-economic barriers, despite being free? Like needing to pass an entry exam or being located in an area with only middle and upper-class neighborhoods.
@nholanl1952 OK, the part about the "academic background" was badly written. What I meant is "they do not work in academia or even the education sector.
For the other point, yes, the school uses the results from the "8th grade exam" (the end of the primary school exam), as does every other high school in the country (Poland). It is harder to get to as it is a "prestigious " school, but it is not that hard. I have done some "simulations" (ie just put random numbers into the "recruitment points" calculator and see what inputs would be above the minimum score) of the appointment process, and you have to be a bit above average but not by much.
It is located in the city centre, but the public communication is good, that about 60% of my class of 32, does not live in the city, with about 25% having a daily commute of >20 km (I am included in this 25% and my monthly cost of transportation is 9.83 USD adjusted for PPP.

The initial video is heavily biased. I have watched some of his other videos and have talked with him, he doesn't believe in many of the things that current AI tools can do, and is living in denial. Although given that, I'm not defending Devin here.

I am blown away by my first impressions.
I had a React TODO app I made 8 years ago that I thought would be a good test for the agent.
First, I asked it to update the dependencies to the latest versions, which had multiple breaking changes due to being 8 years old. It handled that, fixed the breaking changes, and resolved new console errors. I then merged that PR.
For the second task, I asked it to refactor all class components to functional components using React Hooks, switch to TypeScript, add ESLint and Prettier, and fix all issues. It completed everything successfully and even launched the app to test all the functionalities of adding and removing TODOs.

I don't know. I think you might be overestimating how many people would actually want to do something like this.
I had a stint teaching high school computer science. I would say that pretty much 100% of the students did not want to pursue something like this, except maybe as a way to bolster their college chances. They just wanted good grades and good chances at doing well in life.
It takes a very, very aware high schooler to know enough about the world to consider contributing to the real world and the scientific community.
So I am of the mind that the only people that will do something like this... are high schoolers that would already have done it regardless of circumstance. And yes, they would have been exposed to some very interesting things at an early age, but on the other hand, many children exposed to those things would not care one bit.
For every Einstein, there is 99% of the kids out there being shown a compass and saying, "meh". Whereas Einstein's brain exploded with thousands of questions and a sense of wonder.

You didn't explain the Devin situation well. Specifically you didn't say whether Devin did anything useful at all.
The answer is that it didn't, there's no useful piece of work completed at all. Sadly, your video makes it sound like Devin actually did some work, just not quite what was asked.
i didn't get that impression at all. he said it didn't even attempt to do the task requested... that it referenced non-existent files... that fixed bugs that it created... where did you get the impression that that it "actually did some work" ?
