You are a wonderful storyteller! I’ve lived in New England my whole life. Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’m in RI on 15 acres. We also have a Woodstove with lots of wood we take off our land. I grow a garden, knit, make candles. My husband is retired from the Navy. He was a nuclear engineer. Now, he has some fantastic stories about all the places he has been. I will continue to follow your wonderful channel. God Bless.

My mom is originally from Maine, she moved to the Detroit area in 1958 , i was raised in Detroit and never felt like i belonged here. My mom just recently passed away, and I really want to move to Maine where my mom grew up because no matter how long she lived here in Detroit Michigan she always talked about her home state of Maine but she never got the chance to move back. Now im thinking about moving there with my wife and kids to live a simpler life 😊

My fiance and I are looking to do this very thing. Building it from the ground up. Having a good amount of acreage for farming, gardening, and animal rescuing those who can't take care of their dogs and cats. A sanctuary but small. Selling gardening veggies and fruits, selling wood that we harvest and will re plant. Engaging in conservation efforts. Living rhe simple life. Any recommendations. We've been up to Fort Kent to millinocket, Presque isle, brownville or greenville and the price range I keep finding is outrageous everywhere I would Luke to be. I've been up to Maine so many times. I don't want to be that implant as kids call it. I want to engage with the community eventually thriving and helping others like we used to do.
Thanks for sharing your story and you really truly got an amazing place in maine. I hope to see you up there someday. You have a new follower.
      Thank you.

My husband and I live in Maine. This year we will be building our off grid home. We have had to property for about 5 years now. We have been building and paying for it as we go. We are excited to be able to get out in our little slice of heaven. We are a mile and half off any maintained road. We already have the well and septic in. And have our flock of chickens. I am in my late 50s and my hubby is in his early 60s. People call us crazy, but we feel at home every tine we arrive at our property.
It is like it is meant to be.
We have followed your channel and look forward to many more of your adventures!. Thank you for taking us all along.

I find I have more in common with people in northern areas. Why did I choose Central U.P. of MI. Actually wanted Island property in great lakes. The amount of game on islands isn't a lot. I bought 10 acres in U.P. because it was cheap 1500$/acre and close enough to drive to in half a day. I hand dug my piers and foundations. Have built a skillion pavilion which will be a cottage once I get walls up. The 3 springs on my property pretty much sold me on it. Trying to build an Earth ship like Goldie and Matt's. 24x32 section at a time. No tires or berm. I do masonry work so using cmu with insulation and masonry veneer for my north wall. I used Land Watch too. I couldn't buy the property as fast as I wanted too. Took 3 weeks not 3 days. Spent a few years finding out what grows where on property. Getting certified organic this spring. Property is covered in berries and cherries. Organic wild berries and heirloom fruits. Property came with wild/feral friendly honey bees. Zebra stripes disorient biting flies. They do serve a purpose. Only 20 counties east of the Mississippi have less than 20k people. Most of them are in Maine or U.P. of MI. Maine has decent hunting laws too.

Welcome to Maine! My hubby and I were born and raised in NJ and he joined the Navy and his last duty he was stationed on a ship here in Maine. When he left the Navy after 12 yrs of service and traveling around we decided to stay and live here in Maine, that was 44 yrs ago. We are so glad we stayed and raised our children here. We had talked about living off the grid many times, but I was the one who always talked him out of it, always a city girl, but now that I am in my 70’s I wish we had given it a try.

    Hi Jason n Jen,
Wow what a wonderful story to tell!! Thank God Jen
was a strong believer against Alaska 😳, but what would
we do without dreams, I’m a big dreamer to Jason. Lol
I do love Montana, it’s beautiful but I couldn’t live there
    UNLESS I hit lottery (I don’t play but if I did 😂) I think
Maine is a perfect place for y’all. You’ve loved it enough
to make it work and worth the move. Something that
most people just dreams of. (🙋‍♀️ me) I’m like you, as bad
as I hate winter I still like the 4 seasons. I’d never move
to Florida for the warmth, no thx! But it’s beautiful to visit!
With our beautiful country getting so corrupted, we all
best know how to live off grid! And be ready! (My opinion)
I really enjoyed your story, it lets us know you a tad better.
    Thanks for that Jason.
Stay safe, warm and God Bless ❤

Honest account. Thx. Unlike many of the faux "preppers" with an ax to grind ( or Stihl ). Straight, well done, no politization or those paranoid conspiracy theories on the endings of the world. We're also in Maine heating 100% with 2 wood stoves BUTT not off grid. The firewood is self harvested from our 60a woodlot. Low tech with ATV, trailer, 3 chainsaws, splitter (electric now ). Some tough labor but enjoyable (most of the time ). Good luck.

I'm so glad we ended up in northern Maine. And as you said, for a person from "away", the biggest shock to me was not the winters, it was the bugs. Born and raised in Maine. First job took me to Dallas for 12 years then Connecticut for 4. Decided in 1995 to get off the corporate hamster wheel and move back to Maine with my family. Ten years ago sold the lake property with neighbors every 200 feet for acres in the western mountains. Took a short lived consulting job in Houston a while back but back to the Maine woods when it was over. Now 66 and still in the Maine woods. Used to tell people in Maine it always snowed and when not snowing it rained to discourage them but that doesn’t work anymore. We were the best kept secret but not anymore.

Looking for property with trees and a stream and this is why I have been looking at Maine. Want out of town but close enough for groceries and medical. Use to live in Truckee California so snow is no problem. The only thing that might be a problem is bugs. Getting my house ready to sell now. Really enjoy your video. Other than that, we have mud season…which can be a bit messy and the occasional Nor’Easter during the winter. Best of luck on your search!! Feel free to reach out via email should you want to talk a bit more in depth. 😊

I worked with an older gentleman in the 90s in Georgia, he grew up in Maine. He said Maine is the coldest place he's ever been, and would never live there again. He only went back in summer to visit his family. Some are born that way, where our bodies can't adjust even if born there.
I'm glad Maine worked out. It is a beautiful state.

Its funny how you and your wife are just a few steps ahead of my wife and I on the journey to find a place to retire/homestead. Took the same trips to Montana/idaho and loved both places but with our minimum acre limite set to 50 as well and wanting to be distant from high population areas the price point for Land out there that still has some trees on it was just not worth it for us as mountains /lakes/streams are also a necessity. We are currently searching in the same areas of the NE and are plannign a trip to drive around Maine here in the coming months. Glad I found your channel and know your inspiring others to go ahead and make the leap. Sometimes you know your ready... but doing the same thing in the same place so long you get "comfortable" in a place thats uncomfortable and its hard to make the move.

During our journey we have met a lot of people that are wanting to do the exact same thing. It can be done! It’s not an easy lifestyle. We both work harder now then we ever have at any job we have been at. The upside…it’s the most rewarding!! We hope you find your little slice of heaven! The hardest part was having the land for over two years and not living there. We stuck to our plan and now we couldn’t be happier. It is difficult to take that leap of faith but having each other to lean on made it a little easier. Good luck to you and your wife! Follow your dreams!! We are very happy you found our channel. ♥️😊♥️

Hello Jason & Jen from our working farm in Central ⛵ Lakes Region New Hampshire. You have made a good choice. Not sure how close to the Canadian border you are. Maine can be very rural. So far property prices are better in the outskirts of Maine than New Hampshire. We live the 1940s lifestyle of our parents and grandparents on 350 acres. Grass fed beef/commercial hay and logging. That said we are 3rd generation. We do take advantage of the best of 2024, but heat with wood and can be off grid if necessary. Our kitchen wood stove is vintage 1930, with propane back up. Some of our tractors and farm equipment belonged to my father-in-law. There is a 1940 panel truck sitting in the hay barn. We could not be happier. Our town is small and down home Americania. I would recommend Maine for anyone serious about getting back to the land. ~ Diane

I recently moved to Wyoming, but I am discovering that there are some significant issues with the idea of homesteading. Land is now quite expensive due to the pandemic as well as an influx of West coast people escaping the social problems. Water is a gigantic issue. A two hundred foot well can cost you 40,000 dollars. I asked one of my fellow instructors who has a lot of oilfield experience why it is so expensive to have a well. He said due to geology there are multiple layers of rock that cause drilling to be extremely expensive. Many people opt for a water cistern and have water delivered to them. This is not truly off grid nor independent since you need a delivery man. Most of New England is not too expensive to have a well and in many places you can have a shallow point driven well.
Having grown up in New England I know the region and I can see myself moving back and most likely in the Pine Tree State.

Hi! Since we bought our property in 2019 everything has gone up. Land around this area does not stay on the market long because people are wanting to get away. Our water table is extremely high in our area so we plan on putting in some shallow wells when we get our animals. We had never been to Maine before we came to look at the property. Both of us fell in love with the area and the people here are amazing!! 😊

Taxes can be cheap or expensive. That depends on what area you're in. If you get in to an unorganized territory, you can have lots of land and cheap taxes. If you get in to a town, you get a plop and pay a lot. If you get in to a city like Bangor, Lewiston, etc then you'll really pay.
In an unorganized territory for more than 50 acres with a building, I pay $310.

During the recession we moved back to RI after 20+ yrs in OR. Had the opportunity, story pretty much parallels yourself. Found land such as yourself. We never visited the land before purchasing. Sold everything and drove 3100 miles. We wanted to be in the Mts, grow our food, hunt, fish and be independent. Would never change it. We have 40 acres surrounded by BLM & National Forest. @@HanbleceyaRanch Yeah, I understand the difference geographically, but I have dealt with the same situation in Illinois.. the entire state is pretty conservative except for the Chicago metropolitan area.. but they impose their will upon the rest of the state.. and I see Maine heading that way, especially in regards to the 2nd amendment which is a deal breaker for me, unfortunately... plus, the places that go anti-2A end up becoming horrible for property rights, too.
Maine has great land prices and a climate I like.. but since I am going to be building my forever home on a large amount of acreage and put a lot of my money/labor into the property as well, I have to think long term.. heck, even in the short term Maine is trending more towards Connecticut/New Jersey than say, New Hampshire, politically.. But I think it's safe to say that within the next 10 years, the odds are VERY high that Maine will continue trending more towards Connecticut/NJ... And that isn't a place I would want to have everything I care about invested in/a place I'd want to leave my property to my children.
Sad that an otherwise good state is going that route.. Reminds me of Colorado. Transplants and people with 2nd homes from California are/have ruined the state by working to turn it into the state they fled from... same seems to be happening to Maine.
