  • The Million Dollar Currency Collection of Joel Anderson is the subject of this CoinWeek Exclusive video. We sit with Stack's Bowers co-founder Q. David Bowers and currency experts Peter Treglia and Brad Ciociola to discuss six highlight notes from the collection, including several notes that sold for over one million dollars at auction.
This is one of the most exciting paper money collections ever assembled and this sale offers a rare opportunity for collectors to view the ultimate banknotes in the U.S. paper money series.

So, this is where anyone with a collection of US paper money comes to get humbled. That was some serious stuff. Probably second only to the Thurston Howell III collection. Seriously, though, all of the notes shown here were stunningly cool and impressive. As I watched this presentation, I had to keep wondering about security measures for having so many rare items together at one time. You must need some kind of high level security clearance just to be on scene there much less to be able to handle any of those notes. As a third class Titanic passenger, I'll never need to worry myself about such things in the alien world of the rich.

The Albert Gallatin $500 legal tender is a great rarity. Interesting to see in a video display. The Friedberg book/guide has a picture of that same individual bill as Brad Ciociola mentioned as well as a pic of the Robert Morris $1000 LT. I've never seen a live display of that 1891 $1000 silver certificate. Amazing the Smithsonian doesn't have that one along with the Serial #1 example. Heritage Auctions sold a black and white uniface proof of that note for $82,000 a few years ago. A proof is just a test print and it's without the red seal/numbers and the green back. Viewers, that note is a rare sight even in a video. Damn, I've never seen a live image of that Quincy Adams legal tender either. Friedberg book has a picture of this note, but that's another rare sight outside of a book. The stuff they're showing here are among the absolute titans of US paper money.

At the risk of appearing to be an idiot ; who would have used a $ 1000 note
in the mid 19th century ? ie. What would it have been used for ?
