I did both Gannett and Fremont in Aug 2017 (and during the same trip we watched the total eclipse from another nearby summit, Mt Glover). Fremont is a tough scramble, but Gannett is certainly harder - with the distance and glacier travel, it felt like a real expedition. We were reasonably fit and it still took it us ~16 hr from Titcomb Basin, although no doubt strong athletes could do it faster. Our route required crossing the bergschrund above Gooseneck glacier, and fortunately the snow bridge was still ok in August - but you cannot take that for granted, and from what I read, the alternative routes would be a lot harder if the snow bridge is not intact. Gannett is supposedly among the hardest state high points in the lower 48 (I haven’t done Rainier or Granite, so can’t compare), but I am sure there are many other summits in the lower 48 that are harder. It was obvious hiking thru Wind River that there are many summits that would require serious rock climbing. Similarly for the Sierras of CA. I haven’t been to the N Cascades but from what I’ve read they appear equally challenging or more so. So even if by ‘America’ you mean the Lower 48 of the US, Gannett is not the hardest - but yes it’s hard, and is among my own proudest mountain achievements!
I think he meant hardest state highpoint in the lower 48 - and rainier probably has more technical challenges but if you’re to do any of them in 1 day Gannett would probably be the hardest I would think
The video is awesome but I agree def should've had a helmet and crampons forsure also maybe carry the axe the correct way but other than that congrats on the summit looks awesome
Just got out of Indian basin after doing Fremont. Doing gannet with no gear is crazy! I’ve heard gannet is one of the hardest high points in the states, but I’ve heard that other mtns in the range are harder (like Sacagawea)
Gannett is a beautiful and challenging mountain but is actually one of the easiest 13,000 ft peaks in Wyoming and certainly far from the hardest in the Lower 48, let alone Alaska. No drones allowed in wilderness areas. Seems obvious but then someone always goes and does it...
Not even close mate. Most of the peaks that surround Gannett and Fremont are technically more difficult. In fact most of the 13ers in the Wind River Range are harder than Gannett. Micro spikes and sneakers. That may work for Gannett, but try doing Helen via the Tower 1 couloir and Tower Ridge above with that gear. That's 60 degress and 5.6+. Let's keep it real eh?
Nicely, very nicely, done. One of my favorite regions of our beautiful country. Imagine, being in the Himalayas and the height comparison. We are fortunate for our own version however !
I’m so curious about your pack… how much food you were able to bring and how you prefer to refill water along the way… you’ve probably done a packing video already. But I’d be curious about what you prioritize for days-long hikes like these.
Hey Molly. So fast-packing is the idea of going light for a short multi-day trip like this one. I brought all sandwiches, trail mix, and some fruit and filtered water all the time with a sawyer mini or iodine to never carry to much weight
Nice video, great memories, well done! Why not try Gannet in the winter. I was on a successful January expedition that did the first winter ascent of Gannett in a storm, bivy at dinwoody pass base and got 2nd degree frostbite in the early 80's.. Good winter training. Best of luck in your future outdoor adventures! Cheers and climb on!
Holy moly. These are coolest mountains I've ever seen in the US. Amazing job Brian. How many days did you spend there? Do you have GPS track or alltrails map?
Denali is MUCH HARDER! "America" can mean the Americas which include Central and South America, which also have much more difficult and technical peaks.
Hey man! Just stumbled across this video randomly. I do lots of the hardest hikes all over the western US and Gannett is on my list to do next summer (just as a day hike up Tourist, as I first saw this on Mediocre Amateur). I might want to pick your brain about it next year. I have a relatively new hiking channel as well -- my stuff may be able to give you some ideas if you like harder longer stuff!
It looks like you packed pretty light, did you bring bear spray? I didn’t see it. I would be a little uncomfortable out in grizzly country solo and no bear spray! 😬
Bear spray is always smart but the Winds have very few Griz, a few reported passing through now and then. There are black bears but I've never seen one in 15 or so trips. I do take the spray with me always though
Malarkey. Not a difficult climb at all, just a long way from the road. Don't try to make such a big deal out of a simple mountain climb. The summit of Gannet is a nice place to be, true.
A stupid comment since most people find climbing any mountain with more than 2000 feet a major challenge. Context please, save your ego for more mountaineering based audiences.

Gannett Peak without crampons, mountaineering boots, or a helmet. Folks, don't do this without proper gear and training. Especially solo.

He’s wearing crampons, the other gear not so much.

Yoi can be fine with spikes.

FWIW - drones aren't allowed in any wilderness area in the US. Love the footage, just giving you a heads-up for next time. Thanks for the vid

Intense. Wind rivers are no joke .
They are an amazing range

Lots of places to explore in the US for sure
Awesome video. I’ve been to the Winds twice. I’ve not climbed and peaks yet in the Winds. Maybe in the future. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. The Winds is very beautiful.

That’s awesome! I remember chatting with you at the top. My group was up there at the same time as you. That is my friend with the green helmet.

Thanks Yongsung! The Wind River Range is fantastic...I spent about 10 days there in total over a three visits. I record my runs and hikes on Strava.

I think Denali may be harder. Alaska is part of 'America' now.
When most people say america they mean the lower 48 states. Everyone knows alaska is not the same kind of terrain.

Fun peak. I think it is easier when the crevasse is good in early July. We did it in one day in 2020. Long fun day.
