Young people - Working twice as hard as others only works if you take care of your body/mind. Even then it’s not worth it most of the time unless you have a burning passion for your specific field of work. Don’t drive yourself into the ground chasing entrepreneurship alone - it won’t fill the void that’s missing in your life. Trust me. @@agastyajain4129 I'd reccomend looking into general religious truths. The idea behind it is that by fully accepting truth and love (which are the same thing if you think about it enough) you adopt a responsibility that gives you meaning...which will allow you to suffer without it mattering. Suffering is inevitable, but life is about finding that purpose which makes it worth while. And since all of our subjective experiences are tied to objective reality...aka everything we do, think, idealize came from somewhere else...it only makes sense that the destiny of our souls is tied to a God who is the ultimate love and truth itself. All that I just said won't solve everything you might be going through...depending on context things pertaining to life can be as simple or complicated as you make it...but I hope its a good start. The answers that pertain to the purpose of life are out there, you just have to be willing to seek them out. Many times in life we have to make acts of faith in order to make what we percieve to be the "right" decision...why should our interpretation of God be any different? 1. Focus on something that has high value to others. This means being confident that your idea or product will solve a real problem for people and that they will be willing to pay for it. Musk emphasizes the importance of being rigorous in this assessment, as it's easy to fall into wishful thinking and pursue unrealistic dreams. 2. Be extremely tenacious. Starting a business is hard and there will be many setbacks along the way. You need to be able to persevere through these challenges and keep going, even when things seem impossible. 3. Work incredibly hard. Musk says that entrepreneurs need to be willing to put in 80-100 hour work weeks, especially in the early stages. This will give you a significant advantage over your competitors who are working fewer hours.

+Rastacraft So true. But you have to know what you're working towards before you invest so much time. Most people are clueless what to do with their lives, and those that do are usually delusional thinking they're doing something great when it's not (i.e. 99% of UA-camrs).

Number 1 is the most important - provide high value to someone else. That always been a mystery to me - how brilliant entrepreneurs are able to anticipate what others need and provide for it. It’s their gift and lacking that gift, the reason I’m not an entrepreneur.
It is not enough to work more. I used to work a lot. The only things it gave me was double salary after 6 years of work. It is crucial to see that he starts from saying that we have to do something which people will value. The other thing is that we have to be able to take risks, standup after failure and be flexible after we fail. Sometimes we just simply do things because we used to do them before and this is the reason we don't learn from our failures. It is easier to continue than change ourselves. And to do it I don't see any other advice than to force ourselves to do things differently. So, it is not enough to work hard. If you work hard digging your grave you will only have very deep grave.

Lol at 1:55 (after Elon gives her advice on entrepreneurship) Interviewer: "I like your work ethic" - as if to say that passes as a good answer and she approves. Elon: meekly "Alright...... thanks" - genuinely confused because that was advice she requested, he never considered the question was a form of appraisal. This is why Elon gets stuff done while others strut about or waste time on useless mindgames.
Oh you guys...she was ending the interview. Interviewers are allocated a limited amount of time for these things. If you notice, he gets up after she says "thank you" at the end. I'm pretty damn sure she knows he's way beyond her league and that he doesn't need her approval for anything. His head nod and the "alright, thanks" was his way of acknowledging that the interview was coming to an end and that that was her last question for the day. She did her job, she got a great answer out of him for you guys.
This advice isn't only for entrepreneurs, as the vast minority of all people will ever be entrepreneurs. Regardless of what type of worker or employee you are, work harder and smarter than everyone around you, and you will never be disappointed with how you can climb the ladder and end up. One of my favorite things to do is to dig down and do self-productive things while other people my age are "living it up" partying and engaging in impulsive pleasures. You may look around and find that a lot of people are better off than you right now, but nothing beats hard and smart work in the end, and if you make that promise to yourself, you're going to end up satisfied.
that's an absurd. In Europe they are trying to reduce working hours from 8 to 6, in Denmark people finish at 4pm and restaurants closes at 5pm and everybody feels good and satisfied.
One of my first jobs was working as a painter. There was an old pro running the crew in his last year before retirement. We knew he was coming to check in on our work so we made sure we were rockin n rollin in the middle of a hot summer day. He saw us baking in the hot sun, covered in sweat, paint cooking in the heat, and yelled at us to “WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER!!” In other words, we thought we were putting in the hard work…but we weren’t being smart about it and should’ve been working around the sun. Soooooo, it doesn’t really matter if you’re working twice as hard as the next person if YOU aren’t being smart about it and your leaders aren’t smart themselves. Doing more dumb stuff isn’t a recipe for success.
Yeah there's nothing worse than the guy on the crew who's a) stupid and b) proud of how hard he works. Cuz he'll "work so hard" that he'll put in a bunch of hours messing shit up for everyone else. And also cuz he's so proud of his "hard work", he'll resent everyone else on the team, who put in less hours yet still get more done than he does.
yes work twice as hard as others and stuff is something that I used to do, and I used to ignore social interactions and make up the excuse that I am "working", and that has made me lose tremendous confidence as well as social skills in the real world. Idk it just seems that there should be another reason for life other than work.
It was an advice for entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur is a mindset, not a job. It means to come up with all sorts of ways to arrive at your goals, at your destination. If you’re employed, and decided to apply that “work twice as hard as everybody else” to your job, you probably made the company take leaps further towards their goal. Whatever their mission statement it may be. But ask yourself: is the company’s mission statement/goal the same I have? I doubt John’s mission statement is “to be the premier retail company in the world” or stuff like that. That’s company talk. Elon is talking about people who want to achieve their goals in life. What those goals are you have to find out for yourself. 9 times out of 10 is not your job. Your job isn’t a goal, it’s not a destination. The money they pay you there is solely the tool which you use to get to your goal, not the goal itself man. If your goal is to buy the piece of land of your dreams for your retirement and your family’s enjoyment, you know you have to attach a price to it. Dreams have a price tag on them. Well, now, as an entrepreneur I’ll do whatever it takes to buy that piece of land with that beautiful property. In order to do that, I’ll work twice as hard at my job so I can save twice the amount of money. Or I’ll start a business of my own, and I’ll get through the first years of operating in the red to get to one day high profitability levels so I can control my compensation-not my boss-and how much money I put away for that beautiful piece of land. As long as the way you get to that destination is honest, legal, and ethical. And mine was just an example-it doesn’t have to be a piece of land with a property in it. It will be whatever inspires you or your family. But if you’ll never stop and THINK ABOUT IT, you’ll never figure out what you’re fighting for-and the hard work will be meaningless, without result financially nor emotionally. Think for yourself man, that’s what millions of people don’t do. They’re leaves on the big river of life: they just float on it, thrown around by the flow, and sometimes the flow rips them in two. You gotta become a rock, you stay firm and put on your goals and values and the flow doesn’t move you one inch-it only shapes you up a bit. Don’t work just to work, man. That is of no use to you. Useful to the company for which you work for-but you’re not your company! You’re your own person, with a family and people you love. That company cares about the CEO/Founder’s family first-yours second, if not last. Hope I brought come clarity. These are basic success principles right here
I think he's also saying that strategic planning and strategic effort are important parts in working hard. lots of people work really hard but they don't succeed because of an unjust system.
Pigeon Morris Hi, I suggest you read Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" & see the section on sharpening the saw....if you would like another angle on what you are mentioning...and haven't yet read it. Nice comment.
This is true. At school, i really loved history and researched so much more than everyone else because i enjoyed it and i became the best at the subject out of everyone at school.
Some small details he forgot: It's not him who is working 80-100 hours per week for "his" succes but his employees. And they got like 50-60k per year in return if they are engineers. Of course for him doing interviews going to dinners with investors or watching things finally working count as "work" so if he live his life 14 hours a day and spend the rest with sleep he is "working" that much.
I learned from others that "Success is who you become". "If everybody close to you will leave you, who will you become?, and if you stand alone, who will you become?".
Love how all the fan boys watching this will be thinking, “Aha! That’s what it takes to be billionaire like Elon. I’ll do it!” Wrong. He had way more than just a ridiculously self centred work ethic.
100 hours a week is just impossible, especially if you're studying. The brain is not going to concentrate for 14 hours a day on specific, tedious tasks.
@@gavinedit8722 It's different with doctors, they have already been taught the skills required in med school. I'm specifically talking about people who are learning new information. I want to apply this mindset to my studying and yet I like most people would find it extremely difficult to study 14 hours a day.
Bobby they are not taught everything in med school they are constantly learning new skills and information while on the job- they also had to pull those study hours during med school as well.
Actually, it's the specific, tedious tasks which are *exactly* what the brain is good at concentrating on for 14 hours (or more) per day, if you're motivated enough. What's much harder - bordering on impossible, depending on the subject matter and your level of intelligence/expert knowledge/experience - is working for 14 hours a day on intense, cognitively taxing tasks, such as those involving high levels of abstract thought and problem solving. The trick to becoming hyper-productive, Elon Musk style, is to identify those tasks which you're able to grind out day in day out until you drop, fill the morning and early afternoon when you're at your sharpest with the intense problem solving tasks, and the late afternoons/evenings with the sort of stuff that you could do while watching a movie or listening to an audiobook or talking on the phone (and wherever possible, actually be doing something like that at the same time). Now that's productivity!
i think the first part was most interesting, on the topic of being an inventor/entrepreneur, if you're inventing something that will be useless, then you've lied to yourself.

Trust me. I worked 70-80 hour weeks, got to the top, and there’s nothing there unless the passion for your work is there. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF and live well with your family.
Good advice 👍
So then wtf is the point of living life?
@@agastyajain4129If working hard makes you uncomfortable and burns you out, then don't do it. Being happy is important and you should prioritize activities and tasks that bring you joy and fulfillment.
Anyways if you have more questions about general philosophy feel free to ask and I'll answer as best I can! Take care and cheers! ;)

Also, have your parents own an emerald mine. Don't forget that step
that's an absurd. In Europe they are trying to reduce working hours from 8 to 6, in Denmark people finish at 4pm and restaurants closes at 5pm and everybody feels good and satisfied.
I saw the American jet from my terrace.
He is genuine.
His expression is like me only.
Doing more dumb stuff isn’t a recipe for success.
you think you as a painter is a smart work lol, Elon Job built smart work companies but somebody need to put the work in , in order it get easy
Building a network could be part of your work. Or socializing in General

Yes, I agree, u don't need any advice. Its obvious, just work harder and harder till u get there.
(1) A lot of passion.
(2) Rigor.
100 hours a week is just impossible, especially if you're studying. The brain is not going to concentrate for 14 hours a day on specific, tedious tasks.
Tell that to doctors lol
@@gavinedit8722 It's different with doctors, they have already been taught the skills required in med school. I'm specifically talking about people who are learning new information. I want to apply this mindset to my studying and yet I like most people would find it extremely difficult to study 14 hours a day.
Bobby they are not taught everything in med school they are constantly learning new skills and information while on the job- they also had to pull those study hours during med school as well.
Bobby also I’m not saying its a healthy option- i think a lot of people suffer from over working themselves with those hours - but its not impossible
Find what is valuable, define the path to success, focus on your vision & work like hell.
